GMC Forum _ Gabriel Leopardi _ Modern Metal Collab
Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 19 2012, 08:53 PM
Hey guys!! Welcome to my new collab!! This time I have a Modern Metal collab from a lesson that is on the way. The tune starts in A minor (00:00 to 00:23), then modulates to E Phrygian (00:23 to 00:42) to finally get back to A minor (00:42 to 01:03).
So the scales that you can use are A minor, A Pentatonic minor and E Phrygian over the second part.
If anybody want to work this solo on a thread of my personal board, please send me a PM and we will start working!

I'll try to find some time to improvise some stuff up for this. If something worth recording shows up I'm in! When's the deadline?
I like this backing. But to me it's more of a rock feel than metal? Suits me better anyway, haha...

Sounds good.
Audio only?
Deadline?

I'll give it a go Gab! Now I have sorted my Recording problems!

Hi Gabriel. I'll have a go for my first collab. Excuse my ignorance but you want solo for just one chorus or for multiple passes through progression. Will be interesting as previously Ive mainly played blues where my solo/licks are what i could steal from the greats.thanks tony

I feel honored Tonyk! You are welcome mate. You should record a solo that lasts the whole backing that I posted. Let me know if it's clear now and if you need some other help!

Alright! Another cool collab Gabe! Love the middle part, makes for some interesting phrygian shenanigans! So I guess I'll go first then! I might change some things and re-record some bits that are a little off...

I'm using tones from Guitar Rig 5 and bunch of multiband eq's and low pass filter.

Multiband EQs.... that sounds interesting. Do you have a good knowledge on how to set them? Any comments about it?

Just Pod farm 2.5 here with a custom tone, no EQ or anything. And my final take is coming tomorrow hopefully..

No much of knowledge but I found good info form youtube video. This is how it looks like in action
To my ears it cleans a bit of the tone.

Thanks for sharing! It depends on your guitar tone and recording but have you tried adding a high pass filter starting in 100 hz? This should make the signal even cleaner.

Alright, here is my final take. Re-recorded most of it, but it's more or less the same as the first one. Also put some EQ on it (thanks for the image WeePee, used something similar), and I think the tone sounds pretty good now!

probably not all that 'modern' sounding seeing as I still seem to be playing guitar in the 90s meh!

Hi guys! This is the final mix and comments for this amazing collab! You just have to hear the result to notice that the track that we created is amazing!! I have composed a solo lesson over this track so you will be able to hear and learn it soon.
Bleez: Hi mate! Your tone is perfect for the track. Your solo start with some long notes that sound really good over that progression, then you play faster notes over the Phrygian section which sound cool, maybe you could make more use of the characteriste note of the mode but it is ok. Finally you recorded a dramatic idea over the last part that combines long notes, rocker bends and fast repetitive licks. So it’s a very complete and funny to hear solo. Well done!
Posterboy: Your tone, your composition, your technique... everything is brilliant and top level. I like how you got the Phygian vibes in the middle section. In the last parf you played a mad repetitive idea that is good but could be even more interesting with some more variations, but it’s ok by the way! Thanks for being part mate!
Saddlefall: As happened withe the previous takes, your tone and technique are perfect for this track but in this case the overal composition is mistical... I can feel a darky and misterious feeling on your phrases. This makes the overal solo very cool to hear. Well done!
Vonhotch: Hi mate! Your solo has some memorial moments like that first Buckethead style melody. Then, there are some sections that are a bit too repetitive and some other where you don’t follow the chords. You have to adjust this, with some triads and apreggios workouts.
WeePee: Nice solo! Your solo starts ok but it becomes cooler and cooler after each section. There are some part in the Phrygian part and also in the last part that sound killer! You should take this parts and work on the others to make the overal thing a fantastic solo. I think that it ust needs some more days of work on the composition.
Dieterle: Hi mate! For any reason I can’t import the files into my project. Could you please send them again? We are already working on the things that you have to learn to take your solos to a new level! Work hard on our Army’s lessons and you will improve it a lot.
Vulpine: Hey mate! Please remember to allow the uploads at Soundcloud to allow me donwload and add your take to the final mix. As we said previously, your take has influences by Buckethead and that’s great for me since I like him! At the same time your solo sounds very fresh and the phrases very interesting. There are some wrong notes, and things to adjust, like the fast sections (we have to work on picking exercises) but the overal idea is really good. You have to make it sound like the masters now.
