Hello all.
I want to upgrade my epiphone Les Paul Custom and Fender Mexican Standard Stratocaster with a better pickup choice than stock ones. The truth is I have absolutely zero experience in choosing pickups. I did research a little bit already (specially humbuckers). The sound i want to achieve for epi LP is Slash's and/or Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi). So for LP, I was thinking of Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro APH-1 in neck and a Dimarzio Paf Pro or Seymour SH-1 for bridge. (Is it ok to mix brands? Any problem with intermediate PU positions?) Someone has experience with those or have other suggestions? My holy grail sound for strat would be to have a David Gilmour for lead and a sultans of swing sound on neck+middle. But actually I am clueless about single coil choice. Still, I feel that choosing pickups are kind of blind decision... I mean, you cannot take your guitar to a shop and test all of them (as you can do with pedals for instance...). I found some sound samples, but they are not really fair (as players, amps and guitars change over manufacturer sites) Can someone shed a light? Thanks for the answers so far. I am deeply checking the the Texas Specials and DG-20 characteristics now.
For LP, I am very inclined to give a go for the Alnico II Pro for neck. I just love Slash sound when he is soloing with neck pickup. The bridge however will be a hard decision... About the stan Hinsley. Some of the sound clips are really great. But something really called my attention "Scorpion Sound Clip Performed by Muris Varajic (2nd half split coil)" Amongst other pickups tested by him... Mixing brands is cool. With both guitars you have a wide choice. For strat I recommend putting all three different pickups for experimenting. You can later easily replace the one you don't like.
