Because before it's mixed and compressed, you'll lose alot of potential from your tone.
So again, if you're direct monitoring, headphones ftw.

There are ways to get the speakers to sound good too, but I believe you need alot of expensive gear.
I heard a guy talking about making a rack in the sole purpose of playing directly out of his home stereo.

Anyway, I, and most others use headphones, it really gives the most potential for least money.
