GMC Forum _ Student Instructor Lessons _ Beginners Phrasing Help

Posted by: Smells Mar 12 2008, 01:14 PM

Well, sorry its taken a bit longer than expected, mainly due to time constraints and camera troubles, I ended up having to go back with a webcam, something I`m going to sort out very soon with some new equipment I think dry.gif

Anyways, heres the brief ...

Leading on from your improvisations you need to add some colour and other elements to make your solo`s sound cool, you can do this to begin with by using some simple techniques. All these techniques (and as you grow as a guitarist you will add more) will give your solo`s some nice "phrasing" and thats what I`m hoping to intoduce you to with this small lesson.

So whats "phrasing", think of phrasing as in the way we speak, when we talk our voice`s vary in pitch and we emphasis words in different ways using our voice, we can say one word or a sentence in different way depending on what type of emotion or message we are trying to get accross to somebody else, you can do this with the guitar also, by attacking a note, giving notes a different rhythm etc we can make them sound very different.

Heres the main spoken video, hopefully explaining this to you a little better.

 Phrasing_Introduction_Vid.wmv ( 8.99MB ) : 1019

On top of this I thought about things that I missed when I was first starting out and learning some of these things, the almighty GMC (nor the internet for that matter laugh.gif) was not around back then so I learned a lot of these things from listening and learning solos and songs of my favourite groups at that time.

one thing I would have liked was some simple solo`s to play and mess around with, so I decided to make a little exercise lesson, hopefully fairly simple, but there is a degree of difficulty in it, I believe that everything needs an element of difficulty to make it interesting.

As described in the main vid theres three main techniques for you to pick up on in this, Alternate Picking, Vibrato & Bending.

I hope this has been of some help to you, your welcome to ask me anything if you wish, and again, if you like this video approach then let me know and I`ll do some more, maybe one giving you some "licks" to practice would be good?

All the best
Chris

Heres the video with the full solo, if you keep the vid window smaller then actually the quality isnt too bad wink.gif

Key is in D changing to E half way through and then switching back to D, to keep things simple I`m only using eight notes from each major scale, I added in a key change to get you used to switching to different keys in songs.

Ths is part of the D major scale I`m using

and part of the E major scale

and now the breakdown of the video with tabs.

Gotta get me a few too!

Hey man, working on this solo as we speak and gotta question.
Will it hurt me in the long run to use different fingering. Say in part one, it feels more comfy for me to start at 7th fret with index, 8th fret 2nd finger to a slide to the 10th with same finger. My bend is much stronger that way. I'm basically playing this whole section only using index and second finger utilizing slides.

Thanks man!

good question mate, so your bending atm with your "bad mother finger" ? laugh.gif

If so then two ways of answering this, first, if it feels comfortable then use whatever fingering you like.

second answer is same as first with a "but" I`d go with using the pinky and bending with either the pinky with your third finger to back up the bend or do as I have and bend with the third. Reason being is that the more you avoid using your pinky the harder it will be to introduce it into your playing later on.

Edit: actually thinking about it, I`m a little guilty of that myself if I can reach with the third then I usually opt for that, so there ya go, dont fall into bad habits like me laugh.gif

That's exactly what I thought! I'm getting into another bad habbit. I can hammer on and pull off with my pinky, but the bends are weak.

Ok man, I'll take the credit for youre next beginner lesson " How To Introduce The Pinkey" laugh.gif

Thanks Chris, I'll work on it!

ok man, I got something for you. Not yours, I'm working on that but it did inspire me and I wanted to let you hear what came out.

This is drum beat 1 that you sent me a month or so ago. Hope you like. smile.gif

sorry I missed this one mate, thanks for the prompt smile.gif

If I can disect this a bit, I think in the whole piece you have several good ideas in there but they dont necessarily all go together, I like some of the backing guitar ideas you have but I think you just need to look at the "whole" structure a little bit.

listening through theres probably 2 if not 3 seperate songs you could make there with some tweaking here n there, I`ll listen some more over the next few days and try and break it down for you if you like, and discuss via email like before? smile.gif

I admire what your doing you cant beat recording yourself and trying to write your own stuff to progress biggrin.gif

To give you an idea (and a sneak preview wink.gif) of what I`m trying to say, heres a song I`m working on atm, I possibly need to add a small bridge piece in it somewhere but other than that its there really, I`ve named it "possfuturelesson" coz its a 2 birds with one stone job, a new song I`m working on and bits that I might use to help you smile.gif

 POSS_FUTURE_LESSON.mp3 ( 721.63K ) : 253

Its a really simple backing to play, some picking may be tricky (ish) but nothing you couldnt get with a bit of practice.

Posted by: skennington Mar 16 2008, 10:48 PM

Thanks man. I recorded that piece not really knowing where I wanted to take it. All advice you have of course is greatly appreciated! biggrin.gif I really got to get to work on the Citizens Failure H2H cover. I been slacking on that one. rolleyes.gif

I liked the feel on that "preview". Kinda had a Zakk Wylde vibe to it!
