Hello Todd!

Thanks for asking for some "mentoring" on the sweeped arpeggios I did in my solo in the Black Sabbath Collaboration.

I've made a video explaining some of the techniques and thinking behind this sweeped/tapped arpeggio.

I noticed in the video that I don't talk much about pick direction, but given that we're talking sweeps it should come fairly natural. To explain it a bit further however, you will want to do all down strokes till the turn-around on the highest string. In this case the 12th fret, where you will do an up stroke, a pull off and then descend through the strings with sweeped upstrokes. I hope this makes sense - if not feel free to ask for further details.

Here is also a GP5 file:

What I'd like to see you do is not only play the shape in A minor, but also in any other key you of your choice! smile.gif </div>

Very cool stuff! Many thanks! I'm on it. i'll make a vid as soon as it's presentable enough to play. I sorta turned away from sweeps/arps a long time ago as sooo many folks were doing it non stop while i was learning to play. Folks like Randy Cooley and other seem to rely on it instead of playing actual melodic bits. So I focused on picking instead. Spent a LOT of drill time working on hand synch/precision. It's about time I opened up to sweeps/arps. There is always something to learn, no matter what stage you are at, and it can come from anywhere. In this case, a very talented student who has obviously put in wads of practice. BTW Nice Ibby!!

Thanks much for the first lesson!

Todd

I do remember you telling me you turned away from sweeps, but I still think it's a valuable tool to have in the arsenal. Maybe not so much the simple versions, which I'm still sticking to somewhat, but once you master those, you can move on to more complex stuff that might not be as common.

I agree smile.gif That's why I was wanting to learn this lick! Quite spiff. It's not like most sweepy bits. It's a bit more melodic and musical and doesn't sound like a nintendo game as some sweeps do.

Also, as I stated in the video, this arpeggio consists of 3 parts. A 5-string arpeggio, a 3-string arpeggio and a tapped arpeggio, and you can of course work on each individually and then put them together. smile.gif

It's a tricky one to be sure! A sort of "back and forth" lick inside an arp which is a very creative way to play it. Instead of just going straight up and down it goes back and forth and caps with a tap. Very well put together and played! I hope other folks give it a shot too. It's not easy to be sure!
