So not long ago a bass player I've been talking to moved close to where I live, and we've been talking about starting a band. He wants to play some progressive sludge metal and I'm up for that, so I tried writing something in that style. Let me know what you think. It still needs vocals though smile.gif

It's supposed to be in the style of Mastodon and those kind of bands.

Corona Virus seems to have slowed things down to a serious degree. I just saw this post and gave it a listen and I liked it quite a bit! it's almost like Bret Hines joined Dream Theater! I really like your drum programming. the little flares on the high hat and such give it a very organic vibe. Many folks don't take time to give midi drums any actual style/life. Your are always very good. have you thought about putting some vocals on this? it's begging for a vocal track to be sure. maybe some of your growling?

Todd

Thanks, Todd! I haven't listened that much to Mastodon yet, or when I have in the past I couldn't really get into them, but now I'm liking them more and more, and mixed with my other influences, such as Dream Theater, this could be a cool style and direction smile.gif

I have considered doing some growls on this, yes. I just struggle with coming up with lyrics smile.gif

Try speeding up the intro guitars a bit to match metronome feel. But you sort of have 2 intro's going on, which can either be interesting or boring to the average listener so keep that in mind.

I felt the need of vocals to really understand the song, maybe cause its not my style either. Keep sharing as progresses.

Not sure what you mean by two intros and speeding up to match metronome? The whole song is at 80 bpm, just varying note values of course. smile.gif

Thanks for listening.

Here's the tab for reference, if you have GP7 smile.gif

The first guitar loop, although it ends on beat it overall felt down-tempo to me till finishes. Are the notes hitting on time? maybe the doubling confused me.

At 1.15 the song felt like it started an intro again to me, likely because there aren't vocals yet.

Yeah, there will be vocal parts of course, which might help the structure. In regards to the intro, if anything I'm probably a bit ahead of the beat, which of course isn't a good thing.

It's the first "DREAM MASTADON" or "MASTADON THEATER" type thing I've yet heard so congrats on a new combo!! God knows I've heard plenty of MESHUGGAH"ISH" and PERIPHERY'ISH" stuff smile.gif So much so that as soon as I hear a chug tied to a kick drum I reflexively hit next smile.gif

Very cool - I love the slow and heavy feel. The tune feels coherent and evolving. Turn this into a Paradise Lost tune and you have another fan 😁

Production wise it is seriously lacking high end / presence. Maybe experiment with some shaping distortion, bright reverb etc. Maybe also work on 'humanizing' the drums a bit more.
