I know the internet has asked this question before - and even tried answering it.

I thought it might be fun to talk about it. What genre? Perhaps pop music. Mainstream. What you typically hear "everywhere." We could try predicting the sonic aspect of future music. Everything these days is so processed and electronic. Will it continue to evolve or completely change? Music has drastically changed even over the past 50 years, but 50 more? Did we reach a plateau or can it drastically change yet again?

What do you think? huh.gif

Popular music will probably still sound like crap. The demography of music continues to evolve in terms of who is willing to part with coin for what.

As a result, the middle of the industry, e.g. mid level artists that used to be on indie labels or self release and still be able to make a living, are simply going away. The economic support system is just not there. Awareness of ones music has never been easier to achieve, getting anyone to care, much less spend money on it, has never been hard IMHO.

Many folks, nobody here obviously smile.gif Think of music as something that should simply be free, sorta like wifi. The 20 percent or so that are willing to pay for streaming services, don't make up for the wads of cash that physical media used to generate (e.g. cds)

Music, is after all, a business. Just like any business it doesn't exist in a vacuum. If I had to guess what top 40 music will sound like in 50 years, I'd guess it would be even more tween gal focused. They appear to be the one demo that will spend actual money for actual product and wads of money on merch. More Taylor Swift, but younger.

As for music that does NOT suck, (please don't take offense any Taylor fans out there) It seems there are far more people that want to play Black Metal, than there are people that want to buy Black Metal.

I have noticed that reissues seem to do well. So it seems Nostalgia will continue to drive the biz to some degree. I'm all for that as most of the acts I really dig came around during NWOBHM or there abouts. There are some standouts now, but so much of it is starting to sound like Bad Meshuggah, you know? Sorta like everything starting to sound like bad Yngwie briefly in the 80s, in terms of guitar music smile.gif

I have no idea what it will be like in 50 years but it's pretty easy to access what others have said about "the future of music" during the last not just 50 but 150 years.
Classical music (along with ballet) - proclaimed dead in 1913 (Paris debut of Stravinsky's Le Sacre)
Jazz - proclaimed dead in 1959
Rock - proclaimed dead multiple times starting in 1957 (Elvis enters army) then in 1970 (post Woodstock/Altamont), 1975/76 - Disco, 1977/78 (dawn of Punk), etc.

Most Sci-fi depicted it to be a bunch bleeps and bloops. Though Star Wars somewhat correctly portrayed, with the Cantina Band, a retro jazz and R&B thing.

In the late 80s or early 90s Miles Davis said that "in 20 years, music will be pure rhythm". Witness the ubiquity of Hip-Hop.
Jim Morrison said this in 1969 ... "It might rely heavily on electronics, tapes, I can kind of envision maybe one person with a lot of machines, tapes and electronic setups, singing or speaking and using machines." Witness, EDM.

Here are some other predictions from the past:
From Spin ... http://www.spin.com/2015/10/back-to-the-fu...ld-predictions/
And ... http://blog.sonicbids.com/back-to-the-futu...-music-industry

Again, I have no idea. I've been listening to pop music 'actively' since about 1970 and I've never been able to second guess anything. I'm sure there will be more 'retro' stuff appearing - that seems to be a pretty safe bet.

I know this much: the trends in popular music will be determined by pretty much the same thing it always has: youth will be trying to rebel against their parents' generation. As Ken says, for as many times as rock has been declared dead, I guarantee you there are groups of kids somewhere in your town right now gathered to make some raucous music that is intended to shock their parents. Oh, and of course they want to get chicks smile.gif.
