Can you think of any bands/artists whose MUSIC you find underrated (among "serious" musicians) because of their IMAGE?

I have two examples, but want to hear your opinions first.

Cradle of Filth, King Diamond would be my offerings.

Oh, and early Manowar.

Cool topic.... I agree with Ben about those artists... I could add Avenged Sevenfold & Buckethead to the list. I remember that people that didn't know Buckethead said that he was a clown that can't play when he joined GN'R. They were completely wrong... he is an amazing guitar player.

yeah, I was going to say Buckethead as well. I've only started listening to his stuff recently but Ive lost count of the amount of comments Ive read where people have called him all shred and that he plays without feeling LOL!

Oh, and early Manowar.

Manowar is one of my two. There is so much great music in their bag that can be overlooked just because of their attitude and looks.

How about Twisted Sister? There is so much more than We're Not Gonna Take It behind the silly makeup and goofy appearance.

I've never really listened to them because I assumed they were glam type stuff. I think during a certain period of my life I would have enjoyed them. If I'd have heard them around the same time I was listening to Motley Crue I'm sure I would have liked it smile.gif

Hmm.

Savatage (who later sold 10 million records when they started calling themselves Transiberian Orchestra and doing Xmas music)

X Japan (who never really cracked the U.S. market at all)

Gnostic (My old pals took a real drubbing due to the fact that most listeners hated the singers voice)

Todd

Oh, so it's the band's genre that limits you in enjoying their music and not because you actually dont't like them ?

Trans-Siberian orchestra is NOT Savatage , they're changing band members like underwear. Savatage had a stable line-up untill the death of Chriss Oliva (R.I.P. genious) and they're one of the most influental bands in the music's history and what's wrong with their image?!

BTW, i DON't think some band can be underrated just because of their imagery... The MUSIC's the one that rates the band, and Image's just a ADDITION to the music. smile.gif

I preferred TS live to the Crue, believe it or not!

The first TS album was recorded in my Village, whilst TS were here the used to drive around the village in an old convertible Morris Minor!!

My friend Finton used to live next door to the studio, they caught us peeking over the fence at them one afternoon and invited us round. We went round and chatted with them for quite a while. They gave us Backstage Passes to their show at Hammersmith when they found out we already had tickets and Dee Snider gave me a TS Scarf when he found out we share the same birthday! I still have that scarf!!

totally awesome biggrin.gif
I think Ive managed to see TS everytime they have been in scotland. They are really cool live. On one of the later tours when they supported Alice cooper, Dee just wandered into the crowd after their set and hung out.

hahah yeah! Twisted Sister is a great choice for this topic! They have killer rock songs but they don't have the respect that they deserve...

Twisted sister definitly !! We saw them in the summer on a major festival this year ..lots of topmetalnames were there too but it was a rockband called twisted sister that delivered the goods. That day they set the new standard about doing a topgig .. everybody (and i mean everybody !!) went totally crazy during their show...and i've seen 30 years of gigs wink.gif
