Whenever I'm trying to improvise it always seems like I'm stuck in the same pentatonic, major or minor shaped box dry.gif

How should i go about practicing so that i can learn to move all along the fret board? Are there like any scales that i should practice?

Dude, that's the same thing I had.. the pentatonic lesson level 2 from kristofer dahl does the trick. I always knew 1 box but he makes you learn all 5!!! So now I can go up and down the neck, while still playing in key! Just check that lesson, learn the scales and improvise to the backingtrack!

Well, everyone has this problem. The first step you should take is learning alot of linear licks, and also licks in every modal box.

To totally free oneself of the box, you need a good ear, and lots of experience. One way to improve this is to start thinking fretboard notes isntead of patterns. This is a huge challenge, but by far the best way to get unlocked.

Technically those are also boxes buddy.
But again, you got 5 penta boxes, and 7 major boxes. 7 harmonic minor and 7 melodic minor too, but this really doesn't help you much against being free. If you're thinking patterns isntead of sound, you'll still be locked to the modal shapes you know most licks in, instead of being free.

The best way of starting to break out is playing patterns.
Patterns are like small repeating melodies inside of a shape.

QUOTE ("Steve Vai")
Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman.

when you do exercises on the guitar for an hour or more try to use those exercises in a jam. For example if you learn a particular lesson in GMC then try to jam over a BT and play the lick of this lesson or try to find your own licks based o this lesson (for example changing few notes or changing minor to major, etc.)
