Hi eweryone here on GMC!

Ihave a quistion. Some people say that if you want to be a greate guitarist you will have to had played the guitar sinse you was about 5 - 10 years old. is that true?

Some say that when you are a child you learn it in a way an addult cant do. and therefore you will never be WERY good at the guitar if ya dont play it as child and then keep on playing it.

I am 22 years old so i sure hope (and think) its a lie. there has to be some greate guitarists out there who first started paying when they hit somthing like my age and maby even older... right?

Also i wantet to say thanks to all the people who answered my last topic "left wrist hurts" here on GMC it realy helped and im back in acktion again laugh.gif

No, it is not true...there are multiple examples of great guitarists who started out playing guitar relatively late...besides if you practise well and effectively you can in one year reach the level of somebody who has been playing for 5 years ineffectively. The temptation to play the stuff you already know over and over again is for many guitarists too big you know tongue.gif That's why many stagnate strumming power chords and in their playing in general after so many years...that's what I mean by learning ineffectively for instance laugh.gif
But keep in mind that you are never too old !!! smile.gif

Dude, don't worry. it's all about how many HOURS you've played, not years.
Well, and what you've been playing

the more you improvise and sing, the more you learn.

It's not really important how early you start, it's how big the desire to advance is, and how much hard work you put into it. Not that I'm saying it doesn't matter at all, but I think it is more important to develop a healthy musical aspirations, and the sooner you develop them, the better. It is well known that child's brain develops sense for pitch and melody quicker, but also a child doesn't have a whole brain developed anyway, so it cannot think on a larger scale about music.

Age is in the mind, in your head. It has nothing to do with being able to succeed at guitar playing... It all depends on whether you are willing to give it all your time and efforts. Early starters have only one single advantage over the late starters... and that is Time... an average early starter has no job, no wives and kids to feed, no bills to pay... but even that bliss comes to an end someday smile.gif

The only thing that can stand in the way then is disbelief, uncertainty, unsecureness, lack of self-confidence, fear, comparison to others etc... Those are to be detected and eliminated by the concious mind smile.gif

Only motivation and hard work matter... Don't let anyone tell you any different smile.gif And if they do - Nevermind!
So, don't give up thinking it's too late. Playing Guitar is not like playing sports at all!

Well its good to start early!!! But than again with proper motivation you can achieve anything...I think Flea started playing bass when he was 18 and he's pretty good..Also I think Mark Knopfler started to play really late ??

While it's a proven fact that you do learn earlier at a young age, it's going to be hard to keep an interest from a young age like that since young kids tend to change interests all the time. So it's no problem, really. One of my favourite guitar players, Peter Lindgren (who was in Opeth untill recently) started when he was 15 years old. And Opeth's first record was released when he was 22 years old, so it doesn't take that long to get to a decent level, and then you have a whole life to practice. So no, it's rarely too late, and definetly not in your case.

Afaik, MK was singing on the TV at 16... so He had learned to play before I guess...

But first "serious" stuff He made was when He was at the university.
