Not sure what a com is, unless you mean something plugged into your COM Port which probably wouldn't be to good (maybe you mean computer).

Most people use either the Pamdora (Mirus), some sort of Line 6 device (POD, Tone Port, etc.) or mic their amp which is way more difficult IMO.

POD's are cool. Marcus uses one and he has great tone. I use a Tone Port with Gearbox. It took a while to get use to, but I am really liking the different sounds I can get the more I play with it.

"Think of a guitar solo as a paragraph. You need a clear beginning, a middle, and an end. Look at musical phrases like sentences, and make sure you break them up using punctuation—or space. You pause naturally when conversing, right? If you don't, you'll bore the listener. The same thing will happen with your audience if your solo is one dimensional. You'll wear them out and lose their attention." —Tom Principato

A lot of it depends on what you want to do, what you already have and what your budget is.

For me, I already had a decent amp and didn't want to have a completely different recording sound than what I was used to for my normal playing. Also I didn't want to record direct through a Pod or similar device because it takes out the possibility of feedback too. Budget-wise, I also didn't want to spend $200-300 on a piece of equipment that I'll only ever use with the guitar.

I spent $160 on a Mackie Onyx Satellite audio interface. Two channel input, 8 channels out. I can direct-in with the guitar if I want, or run a mic into it over XLR with or without phantom power. There's a detachable piece with fewer outputs to make it a portable rig.

I also bought an Audio Technica 3035 large diaphragm cardoid mike with shockmount, stand and cable for $100 on ebay. It's an excellent quality mic for it price range. Can handle up to 158db so it's good for micing guitar cabs. It also does really well with voice recording.

If I find a place to record with an interesting sound to it, I'll probably pick up another mic, so I can record the room's sound too...I can do it all at once with the Mackie unit.

For $260 or so, I have a pretty flexible recording setup. I haven't explored all of its potential, but I'm a lot happier with the bang-for-buck than I would have been if I got a POD.

Actually, having done this, it's not really that hard.

From my previous message, I spent $260 on an audio interface and a good mic. I plop the mic 4-6 inches from the grill of my amp. Crank the volume on the amp, lower the gain on the audio interface to keep the recorded sound out of the red and you're good to go. A cardioid pattern mic doesn't pick up much sound from the back....that with the volume I have the amp at, I really don't get any interference from other sound in the room unless it's really loud too.

A Pod is for sure an easy way to record guitars at home, I would recommend a newer Pod though, the XP sounded much better that the 2.0 version in my opinion, and from what I heard the new ones again sound better. Other options would of course be all the "other Pods" (stuff like Pandora, the V-amp or whatever else there is), there are so many modeling amps on the market now that should all do the job. You could try some of them and then see which one sounds best in your ears. Another option would be a software solution like Guitar Rig 3, which I am using in the moment.

Haha COM port, that is a good one laugh.gif

Regarging the POD, I think it is a good solution. You have couple of options also, depending on your current gear. If you don't have a good soundcard, then buying a Toneport or POD is a good way to go. Then you would buy a cheap and decent ASIO soundcard, and a modelling device. If you have a good soundcard already then, Pandora maybe the answer.

I agree with Ivan, maybe a Toneport would be a good solution if what you need is a recording device, it's better than a pod 2. I use a pocketpod (which has the same sounds as a pod 2) and it's good for jamming/practice, but when it comes to recording I get better sounds out of toneport + gearbox.

Check Pandora Px4d or the newer Px5d. I tried Px5d ina shop and sounded great.

If you can spend a bit more a pod XT or X3 would be awesome.

Fran has a point - a good all around device would be POD XT if you could toss some extra bucks in the budget.
