TBH, I'm not crazy about the tone you used here but otherwise everything - recording, playing - was excellent.

Great job man, you play it better than me that's for sure.
only problematic part is that small run after the pentatonic scale run, but that's easy to fix
again, great job man.

No its not easy at all, Muris makes it look so smooth and simple to play, I love playing this tho, once I`m warmed up I always play it through 2 or 3 times, I wish it was longer

I never really intended to do this lesson to be honest, but I loved it so much that I had to! I love just playing it over and over, I really wish it was longer.
ps. sorry about the little titles etc, I`ve discovered Windows Movie Maker recently and was playing

That little single string run on the top E is quite tricky imo for the timing, just a question, it could be played the same accross the E & B string (if you know what I mean) just wondered why you chose to do it on a single string, just curious

I could be of course,it's just the way how Luke would play it.
PLUS it's good exercise for accuracy involving scale on one string, timing, picking etc

yea def good exercise, I like it coz I`d normally always opt for the simpler of the two so this has forced me to do something a little different to the norm for me.
Just wondered, thanks

I just started this one last night so go easy on me. But I really like the feel on this one. Theres a couple out of pitch bends and some hits and misses during the speed runs. But this one really gives my hands a workout so Im starting to get used to it but still need lots of practice. Thanks for the awesome lesson Muris.

Glad you like the lesson too and thanks for effort.
It needs more practice, that's sure and so I'm gonna recommend
you to practice it with slower backing first.
And main reason is because I've noticed that you play most of the licks
a bit before it's original place, like you're in some king of a hurry or som.
Take it slow, focus yourself on timing, make bends more clear and practice hard,
result will be there,no worries.
Posted by: preownedguitar Dec 21 2007, 06:02 AM
Definitely right on with the hurrying thing. I have a tend to do that sometimes. Needs more practice and to play it slowly first for sure. That was just me trying to throw something together before I had to go to work and was the first take. But I wanted to post something. Well, back to practicing.

I´ve been working on this one too, and it´s going pretty well. But I would like to be able to record my playing over the backing tracks so I can hear what could be better. How do you guys manage to record the bacing track?

I would have to ask you to deal this issue with members via PM,
use/download of backings is sort of prohibited at the moment.
Thanks in advance

Gilmore,
What I do is that I record a video using the backing track, I think its better becuase the instructor can also watch what you're playing and can give you a better advice. I've done that several times and it has been very helpful for me.
Bye.

Hey Muris,
Been practicing with what little time I can get off of work, hopefully you will hear some improvement from my first attempt cause I can hear/feel it with my hands. Some muffled notes and others but it sounded okay to me.
Posted by: preownedguitar Dec 30 2007, 06:45 AM
Hey Muris,
Thanks for the criticing. Sometimes it's hard to hear the specific parts to focus on. I checked on the bends of the notes and you were right. Also with taps on the bend, I was over exaggerating the bend. I'll keep practicing and keep you posted.

Hiya Muris,
Started learning the Steve Lukather solo from you lesson and loving it! Its the sort of stuff I want to play
Just a couple of questions from playing the opening section;
Its prob down to more practice but I seem to have trouble holding enough sustain for the tapped bends on the 3rd string (G). Any tips?
Also on a theoretical point I've noticed some chromaic runs (3 to 4 notes) in places are these what you call passing notes? Cause some appear out of key but because you don't linger on them it sounds ok? Or because of the chord change you are playing a note from that chord?
No doubt there will be more questions as I work through it!!
Thanks

Hi Crazyfret.
About sustain on tapped bends, maybe to add bit more gain/drive?
Or maybe it needs some practicing.
And those chromatic runs, per example frets 16,15,14 and 13 on high E over Fm chord.
If you take a look at the notes, chord AND scale played there (which is Eb major)
you'll see that passing note is 14th fret, note F# or Gb.
You said well,I'm not resting on it and notes around it are fine so it sounds ok.

I see what you are getting at with the chromatic runs. I need to sit down and look at the relationship between the scale and the chord. Its something I need to develop, cause I don't know every scale or chord build up note for note off the top of my head
.
Thanks again
Posted by: Crazyfret Jan 1 2008, 08:29 PM
Ok here's is where I've got up to so far. I've played upto the 8th bar just before the tricky fast run down and up the scale. I've still to get the timing right on that before I record it with the backing.
My tapped bends isn't great yet as you'll hear!
I wanna get this one right cause I'm sure it will help in all areas of my playing. I think for approx 4 hours practicing spread over 2 days I've not done too bad, (I think).
Posted by: Muris Jan 2 2008, 12:10 AM
Not bad take,not at all!!
But first of all you must have proper sound to play this kind of stuff
and to get right "feel" for it.
That means you really need to add more drive to your sound,
the way it is atm it sounds like overdriven clean
and you need a massive distortion for it.

Hey Muris,
Thanks for your comments, you're too kind
I see what you mean about the sound I've not quite sorted out what it sounds like through my amp speaker and how its sounds when I record to my pc.
My set up is prob a bit weird, I own a Marshall MG50DFX amp from which I take the feed from the headphone socket to my pc, (its how I am able to play over the backing track cause I take a cable from the speaker output from the pc into the back of the amp cd input)!!
