hey muris! i was just practicing your mixolydian lessons again, trying to really memorize the mixolydian scale but i seem to be having some trouble. i've never attempted to learn a scale without boxes to help me (i'm not sure if that's bad or not) so i'm having some difficulty playing around with the mixolydian and i fear i may be practicing this scale incorrectly. i've tried making my own boxes for it but to be honest, i don't feel i'm very good at this and am very confused. are there any ways to make memorizing a scale like this easier? should i just try to memorize each note of the scale until i eventually get the whole thing?

Hi Testament,nice nick tho smile.gif

First of all you have to understand and hear the scale.
Mixolydian is same as major scale, except of 7th degree which is flatted.
You must hear that 7th degree,it gives kind a dominant sound.
Than just try any major scale you know already and when you come to 7th degree,
just flat it a semi tone down.
You can do this by playing regular boxes, per example 3 notes per string.
Hope this helps and let me know if you need something else. smile.gif

testament is both a band i love and a character in a video game, so i figure it covers two very important topics! biggrin.gif

thanks a lot, muris!! i think i finally get it now! so basically any major scale that i were to play with a flat seventh would be considered a mixolydian scale? and just to make sure, the seventh in a scale would be the g note, correct? i believe i read that in one of andrew's theory lessons, but i am not entirely sure.

Yep,you got it right,that'd be G note if it's A Mixolyidian! smile.gif

One quick note, this scale now offers different chord progression cause of that 7th degree.
Per example,in A major scale we have E chord on 5th degree.
In A Mixolydian it's Em chord because of the G note,so chord has notes E,G and B(not G# like in major).
Glad you're into theory and Skolnick rules. wink.gif

Hi Muris!
I don't even want to start thinking about modes yet,
but I have a little question, since Mixolydian is the first
mode (I'm not counting Ionian and Aeolian of course) I'm planning on learning.
Do you have a soft spot for Mixolydian?
And if yes, why?
Cheers, Eddie

Thanks

Sounds great, Muris!
It's really nice of you to consider the different levels...
I'm sure eveyone will be glad to have these modes lessons.
As far as I'm concerned I think it will take some time dry.gif
before I can tackle them! smile.gif
Going back to my scales and Cubase...
Wish you all the best.
Ciao, Eddie

Ahh,don't worry at all Eddie, modes are really simple and useful tool, trust me.smile.gif
Once you figure out pattern to make each from major or minor,
you'll be playing them all the time. cool.gif

And it's really easy to make them but I'll let you with basic scales at the moment,
have fun tho!! smile.gif
