GMC Forum _ Uploads _ Another Christmas Tune....

Posted by: Staffy Dec 25 2009, 11:09 PM

Well, it's not actually a Christmas tune, more than it was recorded yesterday... Trying to match Uncleskillet, Chris and Andrews vid would be nearly impossible! smile.gif

As always i'm gonna add some notes about the song & recording that might interest some of You.

The song:
Bob Dylan wrote this back in the 60's and it was covered by Jimi Hendrix, which is also the most famous version. (anyone heard Dylan made his own songs better than others??? tongue.gif ) The lyrics are a little bit cryptic, and in my search for what they exactly means, I found LSD-explanations, Bible references, other space theories and most believable that the text is about the Vietnam war - eg. the Joker is the president in the USA and the thief is CIA. If anyone can explain further to me or have another theory, I will appreciate it a lot!!!

As every song I play, this one also has a story. I recently saw a fantastic clip by the late Jeff Healey at Youtube, and remembered that I saw him back in the 90's doin this song. So it's kinda a tribute to two great guitar players - Jimi & Jeff.

The recording:
I didn't rehearse much for this, mainly just the playing and the vocals - which is still lacking since I'm missing some word here and there. (my memory for lyrics just stinks....) The playing is mostly improvised, and therefore there is no flashy licks here.... biggrin.gif

Guitar:
Suhr Strat through Whammy, Dunlop Wah, Danelectro Overdrive, Boss OD-20 (fuzz face setting, what else?), Boss DD2.
This goes into my hotted Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and is miced with two SM 57's.
Very little was made with the guitar in the mix, just some low bass cutting at 120 Hz and some mid/treble boost to add sparkle. Also the reverb (same as the vocals) was punched in/out between the rythm/solo parts by the automation in Cubase.

Vocals:
Same here, recorded with my Röde NTK and just some compression, cutting the bass and some high-end boost.

Bass:
This gave me some trouble since Im now using Spectrasonics Trilian (which is a FABOULOUS virtual instrument) instead of the former Trilogy, which I originally made the bass lines with. Since Trilian is far more dynamic than Trilogy, I found myself level mixing the bass.....

Drums:
This is EZ-drums, but with separate outputs, so reverb (dedicated to the snare) is added as well as some eq.

Other:
This was a really fast made project, and I mastered with TC Powercore (the X3 plug). Some things could definitely be done better, but I kinda like to have a "live" -feel on my recordings.....

All comments, suggestions, questions etc. is most welcome!!!!! smile.gif

It's not a Hendrix one.... Dylan wrote it... (but his own version is not eaxactly a christmas one.... biggrin.gif )
Yeah, I use to put this statement in the end of my vids, since my own experiences proves that like
1000 times.... And I have never before been that creative as I am right now! smile.gif

Wow Staffy! Excellent quality both in recording and playing. I really liked your solos and singing, especially your sound. May I ask how you get that cool sound? I think you use a Marshall amp on the overdrive channel and boost it with a pedal + wah, right? Some details? smile.gif

Nah.... it's actually my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (with custom tubes and some small mods) and the guitar goes through a Wah, Danelectro Overdive (at the rythm sections) and a Boss OD-20 (fuzz face setting) and a Boss delay..... Then its miced with two mics and just some bass cut and treble boost in the mix..... and some reverb at the solos....
