I've been a minor of fan of Iron Maiden since the early 80's. Just starting to see how great a band they really are. Since I consider myself a rhythm player, which of their players do you think play most of the rhythms. I know they share a lot of the solo's, but who holds down the bulk of them?

Ehm Gers?biggrin.gif I dunno man! Murray is the shreddiest, Smith (my favourith) a bit more bluesy and melodic and Gers, is more of a .... guitar thrower xD I think that Smith play's most rythm... aargh I got no clue!:D

In the good old days when maiden had only two guitarists and they shared rythm and lead parts equally, so there is no maiden guitarist who does most of the rythm. Like Jesse said: Dave Murray Shreds, Adrian Smith Has more feeling in his solos and Janick Gers has rock-influenced leads (when he isn't posing or jumping arround)

I would actually say Dave Murray has more blues in his playing, Especially in his phrasing and tecnhnique, Adrian has a bit more straightforward rock 'n' roll style with blues influence, Blues rock I guess.

Between the three of them now, Its still pretty equal on rhythm and leads.

For me, Dave has better technical level, Janick is more like a showman and Adrian is the historical Maiden sound

In my opinion, Dave Murray is the one that actually gives the technical power in Iron Maiden's songs, as he plays legato-based shred that may not always sound perfectly melodical, but they are cool nevertheless. He is my favourite guitar player in Iron Maiden, probably because he seems to be a very decent person... smile.gif

Adrian Smith is very bluesy and melodical, probably because he also had a career in singing, which gives him a different approach to writing melodies.

When I think of the person who has infleunced Iron Maiden's rhythm the most at the moment, it's Janick Gers. If you watch live videos of him on stage playing on the lower frets, he sometimes strokes and tickles his guitar... He's very experimental in his guitar playing I dare say.

However I am not an expert in this area, although Iron Maiden is my favourite band. Please correct me if I say things that don't make sense.

Hope it helped,
Alexander smile.gif

I would say Dave has the most recognizebale sound in Maiden, as steve harris says himself "When you hear dave playing, you instantly knows its maiden". Which he did actually say in Metal Maniacs 25 years of Iron Maiden issue.
His lead tone is just awesome!

I dont think dave, or adrian, or janick by themselves have the definitive sound for Maiden, we all know Murray and Adrian together form the classic maiden sound, and Janick adds new elements that define maiden today.

Is Janick Ger's guitar connected during the shows?? laugh.gif laugh.gif just kidding.
In the old days Murray and Smith shared the rhythms and solos in albums and live concerts. Nowadays I think that it's the same between Murray, Smith and Gers but I'm not sure.

I don't really like Janick's solos. Apart the one in "The Clansman" they all sound very random and inconsistent... It's just my opinion, but there are some Iron Maiden songs that could use some better solos smile.gif

They're still my favourite band though ! biggrin.gif
