GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Help Me Decide

Posted by: kyldeee Aug 4 2008, 04:14 PM

Ok, so I'm getting a new guitar, in the next couple of weeks, and
I just thought I might ask some of your views on these two guitars,
that I'm considering, I have tried them both, I love them both,
but I can't afford both of them... sad.gif

The guitars are Ibanez JS1000BTB Satriani and Music Man Axis SP

Give me some information on these guitars, good or bad, to point me to the right direction..

Cheers smile.gif

i would say get the axis, if you get it with humbuckers and not soapbars as on the pic.

but in the end it should your own decision

Posted by: wollace03 Aug 4 2008, 04:21 PM

i would definitly go for the ibanez - looks really nice and ibanez guitars are highly playable! cool.gif

There are only ones with the soapbars in them
What's the difference between them,
is there a huge sound difference, Ihaven't tried it
with humbuckers.

Posted by: Praetorian Aug 4 2008, 04:28 PM

I've never played an Axis...but I played a Satriani similar to that one and I was blown away by it!

Posted by: rockztar Aug 4 2008, 04:38 PM

soapbars are singlecoils sound in humbucker size

aaah, ok thanks smile.gif

It depends, BOTH are very playable. The axis has a bit of a smaller scale I think. You might want to try checking out http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Music-Man-Silhouette-NonTremolo-Electric-Guitar?sku=515550%5dthis musicman if you don't mind not having a tremolo, which would be my choice.

Thanks for the link, actually I hope it would have a tremolo wink.gif

Well, there are a lot of models of musicman that do have tremolos and all kinds of pickup configurations. Its up to you, like I said the musicman is a smaller scale I believe, but it is very fun to play and sounds great. I'm sure the satch guitar is also awesome though.

Posted by: kyldeee Aug 4 2008, 06:08 PM

But I can't order it from that webpage sad.gif I could check Thomanns...

Posted by: Henry Dietzel Aug 4 2008, 06:13 PM

I'm interested in buying a Music Man so I'd personally lean that way. wink.gif

I'm not sure if you're familiar with this site but I always find it helpful when it comes to reviews

Thanks smile.gif I have also thought about if I'd get a custom made guitar from MK guitars ( the one Muris uses smile.gif ) That would be so cool, but I would need some serious help with that, maybe I could tease Muris with my tormenting questions biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gus Aug 4 2008, 06:27 PM

To be fair, I don't know a thing about the Music Man Axis SP

About Ibanez I have a very positive experience with the high end Ibanez I've tried. No wonder I bought one. Also I just saw Satriani live and his tone is absolutely killer.
From the photos you put also the looking of the JS is much nicer than the other one, so I would not think twice.

Posted by: kyldeee Aug 4 2008, 06:35 PM

Something got me thinking, if I really should go for the custom guitar, first of all it sounds nice, and it looks so sweet (judging by Smells' and Muris' guitars smile.gif ) I know it would take a long time to get it, but it would be totally worth it, to have my own custom guitar smile.gif

Posted by: kjutte Aug 4 2008, 09:43 PM

Both are great, as you said. I'd say it comes down to which one feels best ergonomically smile.gif

Posted by: Muris Varajic Aug 4 2008, 09:49 PM

Custom is something when you pick all specs by your needs,
stock guitars usually have something extra we don't want
or miss something that we would like.
But both of these guitars are fine instruments,
actually pretty tricky to be compared. smile.gif

Posted by: MickeM Aug 4 2008, 10:26 PM

I don't know the cost of the guitars you displayed compared to a custom built but I guess it's not a big difference. AND the custom guitar will most likely be better built.

Posted by: kjutte Aug 4 2008, 10:40 PM

maybe go humbucker that also has a builtin singlecoil output for the neck PU. great for cleansound!

Splited humbucker will never sound like single, just a small notice. smile.gif

Posted by: kjutte Aug 4 2008, 11:00 PM

Well, the ones I tired rocked.

Posted by: kyldeee Aug 4 2008, 11:04 PM

I've haven't really decided anything yet, but I've taken the Axis from my list, 'cause I really want a floyd rose. So it's between the Ibanez or the MK custom smile.gif

Of course it rocks if pickup is good,
I just wanted to say that splitting humbuckers
can't give you the same result as using single,
it's not wounded as single. smile.gif

Well, I don't really understand that becuase a splitted one simply has two output wires. the single is half the coilings of the hum, which is technically a singlecoil. it's not synthetic.

Try to connect 2 singles and you'll see that is not humbucker.
I thought the same while ago tho. smile.gif

not the same, because magnetism ain't in the same coil. however the splitted hum is.

I tested tons of pickups(H and S) on prototype guitar
and still got different conclusion,
tho I read some articles as well. biggrin.gif

I without doubt trust your ear over mine, however my technical background is telling me that they should be the same tongue.gif

Posted by: fkalich Aug 4 2008, 11:42 PM

well, on my strat, if you combine pickups, it sure as heck cancels most of the hum. Maybe I have a magical strat.

Posted by: audiopaal Aug 5 2008, 08:50 AM

If you're gonna choose between the Ibanez And the MusicMan, I'd go for the MusicMan smile.gif

With your techical background at concideration wink.gif did you concider that a humbucker that you split could and would not have it's position directly under a harmonic position, hence the coils of the active half would be set off.
A singlecoil can be placed right under a harmonic position (the octave of the 12th fret f.ex) and pick up the very best sound while a humbucker would be placed such that it's mid position is right under the harmonic position in order to have it sound best, splitting the coils leaves one on each side of it and the active one will not pick up the best sound available.

That proves, in theory, that a split humbucker will not sound as good as a single coil since it's not placed correctly and therefore not picking up the best of the strings.

And since we both trust Muris' ears I think it's proven in it's practical use aswell smile.gif

With both theory and practice prooved. I second that, back on topic now.

OK

I'm back from my local musicshop...
After spending couple of hours just sitting there
and playing different kinds of guitars, I even tried
Something called Danelectro or sum, MAN are those
weird huh.gif Anyway, after alo-oot of playing, something
was ought to tag along biggrin.gif

So I bought the Ibanez JS1000BTB Satriani,
and I gotta tell u, I'm so HAPPY biggrin.gif
It was like that the guitar and I were one,
if u know what I mean biggrin.gif
It cost originally 1 840 €, but I it got for 15% off,
so it was around 1550 €, thanks to bargain skills wink.gif

Here are some pics of me new baby smile.gif

Well, that Musicman has soapbars, they sound different from regular hums. First you check out how they feel while playing, and than check out the sound. I would go from JS, but I don't like those thin necks. You must check out if you like it of course smile.gif
