Guys I was just wondering if you usually listen to music when working on the computer ? Or do you keep things silent so you can concentrate ?

I generally don't listen to music when doing things on the pc but that's probably just because I forget that I can laugh.gif Now that I've updated my pc I might start doing it more often.. so if you notice more bad spelling from me, it's probably because I got distracted by a guitar solo ! tongue.gif

It depends, when I'm on GMC forum I have music in the background, but I frequently pause it to listen to other music that all GMCers post, it's very interesting. So, no matter if I play it, or listen to it here, or play it on Facebook or YT, it's usually going all the time. My woman likes to listen to music as well, but she constantly listens to what I play (she wanted to live with musician, oh well) smile.gif

I think it's all a matter of habit and the way you listen. If you put it quiet, it's there, but you won't notice it that much, it's more like a musical noise in the background that prevents silence to rule cool.gif

Always music on, except if I need to compose myself.

When it comes to reading, I always have music in the background, but I found out that Eminem is not good,
it's like someone is talking to you all the time trying to get your attention, while real singing which blends in the melody is fine

It depends on what I am listening to. I have found that if I listen to the band Thursday I work about 10x more efficiently. I still do not know why this is, but I am okay with it! Since I really do like their music! tongue.gif

Otherwise, I usually end up focusing too much on the music.

On a different note, I actually turned the theory section of my daily studies into piano study. I think it is easier to apply theory to the piano than anything else, so I went into a pawn shop and bought a little starter keyboard to work with. The only thing is, I started my new job as a plumber this week, so I do not know if I will be able to play as often in the near future. It does give me the chance to generate about 3x more money than my job as a cook, though! Which means more gear in the near future!

All my life I've worked with music (when possible), and also studied listening to music, all kinds, and loud.
It gives me focus cool.gif

Music distracts me big time...when I hear music in the background, I will listen to music only and can't read or write something for work. So at work, no music for me. Besides, I am frequently in meetings or on the phone, so it wouldn't be an option. When I am at home I usually listen to music, especially when I clean the house or am in front of the PC.

Dude, I'm the same, what you said,

I tend to forget that I can, but it's distracting, when I take a break I usually blast a song or too, lately Steel Panther is rotating a lot, it's so great, tongue.gif

I was a delivery driver for about a year.. after the initial novelty wore off, listening to music in the van was the best bit smile.gif

I actually like to work with a movie playing in the background. Usually something with a good soundtrack smile.gif I've got iTunes playlists set up with nothing but movies so I can skip between them. If I given movie is a couple hours long, it actually helps me concentrate. What throws me off is commercials. I can't have regular tv on the background as my concentration snaps during each commercial break. sad.gif

I don't listen to music under two circumstances.

1) At work or in an environment that demands my full attention
2) Im dead

I'm on the computer a lot and I flicker between listening to music and podcasts while I'm working. I find that if I solely listen to one or the other then I'll end up either blocking it out and focusing on the work or forgetting the work to listen to what's being played yet strangely if I alternate the two I can keep a good balance of interest and focus.

As for reading, I tend to need quiet for that. Or I just prefer not to waste good music when I'm going to be lost in a book biggrin.gif

I like to have iTunes radio playing in the background (I discovered Beatles only radio station! smile.gif ) while I'm browsing around. But I do turn off the music whenever I need to work on something as it requires my full focus and music somehow distracts me. I was also never able to study with music on - I like the silence smile.gif
