I learned economy picking for 3 note per string scales and a few other things and i really regret it. I don't economy pick anything descending. only ascending when i go from low to high. I really notice my self doing it a lot with normal diatonic scales and some licks. I used to be really good at speed picking up and down the fretboard ascending descending and some string skips, but i have really slowed since i got my right hand used to economy on the ascending scales and licks and i try so hard to break it but i can't seem to get over it. I highly suggest strict alternate picking to people now unless you really know what you are up against. Any ideas or lessons that i should review or practice? i really need this. sad.gif

Same problem here! what my local git teacher told me was just by knowing economy shouldn't make it a habit rather just another technique to the arsonal.. try and remember how to use economy at the same time start playing all your scales really slowly again.. just say over and over Up Down Up Down Up Down and do all the scales slowly.. eventually the ap will come back smile.gif

oh man ill never understand why people sometimes say economy picking is useful, i started practicing strict AP since i started. But anyways, i think , since you're erasing a bad habit, you should practice strictly AP up-down REALLY SLOWLY, and with a metronome at very slow bpm, and gradually increase speed but only if you're strictly playing Up- down.

i wouldn't say economy is a bad habit. It allows for much smoother pay in some cases and really helps your sweeping.. I keep it for slower stuff.. although when you are going lightening fast AP is better i find EP to be just as benificial when its nessisary smile.gif.. im gunna stick with knowing both smile.gif

should i practice starting with and up stroke or down stroke while ascending? or both? I also always start with a down stroke on almost everything even descending scales and arpeggios.

Hi JesseS,

I recomend you to practice the following lessons:

Pavel Alternate picking lesson 1
Muris alternate picking lesson thirds
David Walliman Alternate picking chops

These lessons seem too difficult at first sight , but the idea is to practice them very slow and accurate.

Of course u can find a lot more of alternate picking lessons Here

Have fun!

Alternate is only one technique that you should use in your playing.

thats a kin to saying "a hammer is the only tool you should use to build a house". i couldn't disagree more. they are all techniques, and they have their own niches in various musical settings. you should know them all. just take a look at some of muris' lessons. he uses every technique imaginable with mastery. i agree with all the others thats say GO SLOW. its the key. you cant play fast until your right hand is relaxed, and it cant be relaxed till you really built up that muscle memory. it takes time, thats all.

AP is base for every picking technique.
Just don't let it be your only weapon, that's whole point.
Practice more picking types at the same time, just give small advantage to alternate. wink.gif

So, If you feel more comfortable doing speed picking using economy picking is that bad? And is it a must to learn alternate picking? I never felt I got more speed out of alternate picking, and economy just felt smoother to me with transitions from strings.

This is how i felt too.. it works really well but when you get into 3 notes per string patterns it gets sloppy.. but the transitions are really easy its just sometimes odd to sweep 2 strings and then AP again.. i mean.. i use economy for fast stuff.. people say AP sounds more consistant as well.. idk.. lets get more opinions smile.gif

Play an upstroke, listen to how it sounds, then play a downstroke on the same note, listen to how different they sound. In order to have a consistant tone you want up down up down up down because the pick direction creates a subtle difference in the tone.

i think thats a very good point! it is what gives ap that characteristic machine gun sound you don't get with economy.
