GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Gmc Song Composing Collab!

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 3 2010, 04:56 PM

Ok following up on http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=37096 thread - here is my plan:

You start by submitting your ideas - it could be a guitar pro tab showing a verse or chorus riff/chords/melody, or a real recording.

We brainstorm a little about what direction we want to go for and then I will start working on a draft and we will see what happens. The goal is to get a youtube video up with our song!

Everyone is invited- if you aren't comfortable recording yourself you can still submit ideas and someone else might end up playing them on the recording.

Use this thread for your uploads!

------------------
Latest draft can be found http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=22230.

As you might hear there is a bit of Mudbone's and Jitty ideas in the first riff. The second (and list riff) was inspired by Marc's DevilDance (measure 10), and is in F# minor (the first riff is in E minor).
Tuning: Eb
Tempo: 144 bmp

Hey everyone,

This is a riff I wrote awhile ago, thought I'd share it here. Tell me what you think! I'll upload a video of me playing it as soon as I can.

Here is a resubmission of my post on the other thread. Just a quick recap, I wrote this song as a way to harmonically and melodically practice the E minor scale. The main riffs are looping, so I think it would be a good platform for people to jump in and out of. The harmonized leads probably wouldn't work and don't sound that melodic, so that can definitely be scrapped. I was thinking the harmonized main riff can be played by two people at once in split screen. I'll record a video of this if its in the final mix. Let me know what you guys think smile.gif

Very nice - both of these gave me ideas to include a section with classic metal (pedal notes and palm muting)!

Welcome back Marc! =)

I found your breaks in the beginning very inspirational I'll try with an arrangement using those.

Both this one and Marc's "sad" gave me ideas to include a softer - maybe clean/acoustic break. I haven't done a lot of those so it will be fun to try.

This is exciting - if we end up realising all this stuff we're going to get something really progressive sounding!

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 4 2010, 04:41 PM

People we need your input!!

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 4 2010, 10:26 PM

Ok I have got something going on using the ideas of Jitty, Mudbone and Marc. It's all riffing so far - I am waiting little with the clean part as I think that will need to come as break further into the tune.

I need to play around with the riffs some more and then program some drums and get recording...watch this space!

Ok here is a first draft. It's all very thinsounding and untight - and will need A LOT of input from you guys... But let me know what you think about this and if you have any ideas on how to continue with the tune.

As you might hear there is a bit of Mudbone's and Jitty ideas in the first riff. The second (and list riff) was inspired by Marc's DevilDance (measure 10), and is in F# minor (the first riff is in E minor).

Seems like E Flat Minor? Maybe my tuning is off though. Maybe more counterpoint, melody, etc? It's working in to something spiff wink.gif

Posted by: thefireball Nov 6 2010, 01:55 AM

sounding awesome to me!! E flat alright!

Posted by: Mudbone Nov 6 2010, 07:05 AM

Sounds great Kristopher smile.gif As far as input, maybe adding some harmonized parts perhaps?

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 6 2010, 07:38 AM

I"m digging the direction so far! Looks to be another killer collab on deck.

Based on the clip/rough cut, I put something together to maybe make sense out of what I was trying to say. Sometimes words just don't work as well as music.

It may not work. Just a musical thought smile.gif

Hope I'm not too late, I've been composing some stuff lately taht I want to use for own songs, but I'll just throw it in the ring here.
The first one is a faster riff, the second one a slow, sad, ballady type of riff.
Looking forward to hear your opinions!

Sorry I keep forgetting to mention that - I have edited my post!

Status report:

I am currently working on including some kind of harmonized lead - as suggested by Mudbone and Todd. Also I am trying to fine tune our arrangement and hopefully also record tighter rhythm guitars.

Please keep suggestions coming - I need all the help I can get (drum programming, sound, arrangement, adding synths/dubs etc). Also feel free to record any idea you have over the backing.

Please also keep your new riff suggestions coming. I am currently prioritizing getting the first parts down before I include new ones, but as soon as we are ready for more sections I will deep dive into all your ideas.

I can't wait to hear what you guys come up with biggrin.gif

Ok here is an update - I have only "cleaned up" the file so far (not yet recorded the harmonized lead). I thought I would post it here in case anyone wants to have a go at it - feel free to add whatever you want. Also I need suggestions for the transition to the second riff and drum fills/beats. Bpm is 144!

Use your imagination guys! huh.gif

Very nice - could definitely be something to use for a bridge later on in the tune! I also liked you other upload - I found the backbeat stuff very interesting- let's see if we can fit that in somewhere as well.

Of course my main concern right now is to make the sections we have got so for work. I am not happy with the first lead. I have something completely different in mind...I just need to practice some more since I am not used to doing stuff in 144 bpm...! This is why I love writing stuff since you force yourself into new territories.

it's a clean guitar kind of arpeggios, but be played faster... it was just an idea for a personal project... even if project is a big word!!!!

Thanks smile.gif I worked up a Guitar Rig 4 Patch called Psycho Lead 3 that used an octaver in addition to a wad of gain and just improvised over the entire track. It was quite fun smile.gif I'm posting the guitar rig file here in case you have a copy. Great software BTW. Would have taken me forever to get that tone using my standard rig, I actually tried it that way first and wasn't happy with it so I switched to software. It's amazing how quickly you can swap out components and cabs/mics/outboard gear when you can do it with a mouse.

Glad you dug it smile.gif Hope it can be worked in somehow here and there. I was just playing by ear and winging it so I"m certain the whole track won't match up note wise, I was really just going to a sort of counterpoint/call and response to the main rythm. Glad it worked out and ended up sounding cool smile.gif Here is the guitar track with just distortion and octaver (custom guitar rig patch that I uploaded just in case) and again entirely clean as recorded with zero fx.

Thanks Todd smile.gif I really like what you did with the drums. I actually wrote this song as a way to learn the E minor scale and legato at the same time, as I didn't like the scale patterns and boxes I found in books. I can play the main riff, its the legato part I'm having real trouble with biggrin.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 14 2010, 05:44 PM

It's a very cool composition smile.gif I hope it can be integrated in to this collab somehow. If not, maybe make it it's own Collaboration?

FREE GUITAR RIG VERSION:

Here is a link to the GUITAR RIG Free Version. It's the same software I was talking about in the chat and what I used to make the recording here for the collab. The free version has fewer options, but it's a great way to get started in software amp modeling. You can add bits like the RAMSTEIN patches as well for an upgrade fee.

Phew - an update: I have been pretty worried about this one. I like the arrangement but still couldn't find a natural melody that would work as a red thread - this could mean a dead end for the tune. However today I finally found something which might work over the second riff. Watch this space!

Sorry I missed the edit (I have been busy eating worms ph34r.gif ).

This is great - immediately gave me new ideas for the drum track, thanks!

I definitely think you should let us hear your idea - especially now that things look a little brighter for the tune. My initial idea for this tune was to create a landscape where we go from hard to soft, metal to rock etc. - it would be amazing if we managed to achieve that (it's an extremely difficult thing to do without heading into "art music" territory).

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 17 2010, 09:50 PM

Status update - I have progressed enough with the melodies for the two riffs we've got.

My plan is now to try a break inspired by Marc Maiden sad ballad gp5 and then have a bridge inspired by thefireballs "sneaky metal". After that it will hopefully feel natural to return to the into riff again.

Right now it feels pretty good - let's see how it works out. I'll let you know as soon as i have something worth listening to!
