Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Beginner Power Chords Strumming by Darius Wave

Sneaking this in before Christmas smile.gif

I'm not so sure about my tone. I tried to find something with low gain but in the end I think I made it a bit too dry? At least I didn't include any reverb or delay.

Thank you for all your constructive comments so far!

Hey there!

First of all...Merry Christmass to you and your family!

Let's start form clarifying tone doubts.
Your tone is not totally wrong but I would suggest to search for a different type of drive. What you use is a kind of tube screamer behaving overdrive - it blend clean tone with distortion and it doesn't bring expected results for this lesson.
Relating to this particular tone I can say that there is a little more treble expected for this kind of power chord playing. Partially it's a matter of amp settings and partially strength of your picking hand. I would suggest to increase the strength to get more sharp tone from the hand.

As for playing I have mostly good news. Aside from a very little timing issues (mainly in the verse part), your playing is clean and precise. I like your overall control of intonation, which makes your take sound almost like pro. You seemd to take care of proper left hand shaping to mute strings that are not in use for each particular shape. Well done!

Hi mate,

how are you? Happy new year! smile.gif

This is a good take on this lesson. I think that your playing is tight and that the chords are sounding clearly. I honestly don't find anything to fix regarding your playing.

As you talked about tone, I think that it's a matter of taste, but I would go for a warmer tone, with more bass and less high mids, as the one used in the original lesson by Darius.

I think that you are ready for a new step regarding rhythm and chords. Keep going!

Hi Andres, Happy New Year - this is a very good take!

The first thing I thought was that your tone wasn't as bright and immediate as Darius's. Darius's tone has a more 'metallic' quality to it. I don't mean 'metal' as in the genre, but that it has a metallic sound to it. There's more treble in his tone and the pick attack is more evident. So maybe experiment with some different presets in your guitar software. Your tone is still good but just a little duller than the original.

The playing itself is definitely very solid. The only things that could be improved are some of the chord shifts. If you listen at 0:32 you'll see and hear that you shift to the B5 chord just before you strum it. This gives the result of hearing the chord slide just before the strum, which can make chord shifting sound messy. This can apply to all rhythm playing and lead playing as well so it's worth remembering. So just try to delay the chord shift until the last possible moment.

Good work!
