IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS PATCH PLEASE PM ME OR BETTER STILL OPEN A NEW THREAD WITH THE TITLE "QUESTION RE PHIL'S CLASSIC ROCK PATCH" OR SIMILAR. THIS IS REQUIRED TO KEEP THIS VAULT NICE AND TIDY.
THANK YOU.

Here is the video showing how to make the patch. I have added the basic noise gate as I get a fair bit of RF in my house.

Here is a Soundcloud of me playing it on an Epiphone Les Paul with some cheap and cheerful zebra pickups.

I’ve been using the guitar plugin from OVERLOUD for several years and I still love it. I’ve tried em all and keep coming back to this one. There are some AMAZING plugins out there and each one has it’s bis that make it great and perfect for any given user. I was on the original BIAS testing team and still am a huge fan of BIAS. I also love AMPLITUBE for MOBILE. It’s still my fave for mobile due to lack of patch change lag and killer tones/fx etc and pretty simple to use. BIAS mobile is amazing as well due to the depth that it allows in tweaking your tone. Back to OVERLOUD, the most recent version of OVERLOUD is called TH-U. It’s got a new GUI which I must say I don’t love as much as the last GUI but heck, things change. smile.gif One of the big changes in THU is the “RIG PLAYER” which is sort of like the OVERLOUD version of doing a “KEMPERISH” thing where you can sample a given rig and get it down in to one small preset without a million different buttons/variable settings. Many of them sound great, just out of the box and you don’t have to tweak your brains out. Sometimes, tweaking your brains out is fun. Sometimes, no. Still, OVERLOUD is set up to look like an actual guitar setup. It’s got AMPS that look like AMPS and PEDALS that look like PEDALS and RACK GEAR that looks like the rack gear that it is supposed to be. I really like this approach as it lets me see what is happening in a signal path just at a glance. I don’t have to memorize a new set of icons that represent the various bits. That’s all find and dandy, I just don’t prefer it.

Building a custom patch in Overloud THU is very much like building a real guitar rig/setup. You will need to pick an amp, pick at least one guitar cabinet, pick a couple of microphones, pick some pedals and some rack gear. Much in the same way you might grab a tube screamer, a 5150 Amp Head, and a Mesa Boogie Guitar cab, you can do the same thing in OVERLOUD. You simply go through each section and choose which parts you want to be part of your new patch. You can make it as complicated as you like. You can even have two entirely separate signal paths that you can mix with the built in virtual mixer at the end of the signal chain.

You can use OVERLOUD THU by itself, or inside of your DAW. You just need some type of audio interface to get your guitar in to your computer. There is also a mobile version now, but let’s focus on the PC/MAC version for the sake of this post.

STEP 1: PICK AN AMP / CAB
Pick any of the amp sims and it will pull an associated guitar cab with it that is matched in tone. You can always change it later if you don’t like the cab. Try all the amps with the cabs they come with. It will give you a great idea of what a wide array of amps sound like. Many of these were built with the vendor who makes them like DV Mark, Randall and Brunetti (Italian Boutique amps).

STEP 2: PICK A COUPLE OF MICROPHONES
You get two microphones by default and you get a large selection to choose from. Once you decide which microphones you want, you can move them around the cone to get the tone you are looking for. If you have no experience with microphones, this is a good way to get roughly familiar with what mics sound like. You will develop a liking for certain mics as you go. This will translate out to the real world, say in a studio, where you can say “I’d like an SM57 and a Mesa Cab with a 5150 Head”.

STEP 3: CHOOSE SOME EFFECTS

You can pick from stomp boxes and rack effects. It’s a great way to get some experience working with effects. What does each one do, how does it sound? Also you can put it anywhere in the chain, just drag and drop.

This is just the very tip of the iceberg. You can get as deep as you like in to the tone and even swap out the tubes in your amp head. However, it can be overwhelming, so don’t make it to hard on yourself. One quick way to get started is to just run through the presets and see which ones you like and then use those as the start of your own patch. You can create any tone you can think of. If you create a tone you like, please do share it here in our OVERLOUD TONE VAULT!!!!

BE SURE TO COMPRESS/ZIP THE .OVP FILE BEFORE UPLOADING

Okay folks, I spent an hour with Tom Nowlin over at the Overloud TH-U Unofficial Fan Group on Faceboook, top bloke, really knows his stuff and wouldn't accept a drink via PayPal for his help.

Below is a step by step guide to set up a Behringer FCB1010 to use in TH-U and Reaper but you can adapt the same principle to do it for everything I would think.

Apologies for the video quality, he recorded his monitor with his phone, I couldn't see how to save the videos (if anyone can tell me how to save videos from Facebook that would be great and I could upload them) so I had to record my screen with my web cam and it wasn't getting the exposure right for some reason. I'll try to to find my software for recording screen footage out, that will make them better.
Hopefully you can see enough to sort it wink.gif

Here goes:

Setting up a Behringer FCB1010 in TH-U and Reaper.

First of all download the Mountain Utilities software here https://mountainutilities.eu/fcb1010

In Reaper enable send and receive of your midi device, OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>MIDI DEVICES right click your device and enable in both the send and receive section.

Create two tracks, first your guitar track and second your midi track. Set them both to record.

https://youtu.be/I3c-ZNtqbVQ

Set up your midi device in BOTH sections in the Mountain software.

https://youtu.be/l7bQiYiplWA

Receive the data from your FCB.

https://youtu.be/vapYc14DJws

Check you’ve received the data.
Grid button img (if needed)

https://youtu.be/fDXutCNacao

Programming. You can select however many you want.

https://youtu.be/pNqP1Hmj7tw

https://youtu.be/zKMr_KLrUCg

https://youtu.be/68v3aC4Q8Vw

https://youtu.be/3MWcirgkjvk

Enable expression pedals

https://youtu.be/Gh-y_RQ5HqM

If your screen looks like this you’re ready to send to the FCB. Mine had CTRL2 enabled somehow but you can disable it by doing the opposite of what you did when enabling the pedals.

https://youtu.be/ITaJXBEp7OU

Now in the Mountain software, click the green midi button next to the red one you pressed earlier and follow the instructions. NOTE: After you click “OK” you have to hold the DOWN button down on the FCB and the FCB should countdown from 9 to 0, that saves the new data to the FCB.

If that doesn’t work:
Press the green midi button on the mountain editor but don’t press ok.
Turn off your FCB.
Unplug midi cables from FCB.
Hold the DOWN footswitch and power on the FCB.
Once the green light shows up under global config press the DOWN footswitch.
Press the 7 footswitch.
Plug in your midi cable from the OUT of your interface (Scarlett in my case) to the IN on your FCB.
Press OK on the Mountain editor.
Hold down the down button on your FCB until it counts down from 9.
Put the other midi cable in from the IN on your interface to the OUT on the FCB.

Try it out.

Enjoy your new toy 😊

Here is the Sysex file>>> Attached File  FCB_DATA.zip ( 681bytes ) Number of downloads: 291
I can’t promise it will work but I can’t see why not. Open the Mountain editor, hit FILE>FCB1010>OPEN and select this file then send it into your FCB 😉 You’ll get more mileage if you do the long route though but it’s your call 😉

Super thanks PHIL!! This page keep getting updated with great patches. It's not a patch cloud yet, but I'm sure that's coming. When that feature is added it will truly be best of breed imho.

Hopefully buddy.

Some of these below need the latest version of TH-U.

You can get the latest version here (MAC, WINDOWS 32bit & 64 bit).

https://www.overloud.com/installation.php?p=11000

It's one thing I don't like about TH-U, it doesn't auto-check for newer versions, even cheap software like Reaper does that.

The Edge.

This is the patch from my solo in the NAME CALLING collab. Here is the patch/pic and preview. This patch is a bit complicated. It's one of the longer signal chains and does require the METAL X add on pack since it's got the SPX 90 in it. Here is a direct link to this post/patch.

This is my solo lead patch from the BURNING CHROME collab. It's using the METL X pack add on for OVERLOUD THU. It will work with the LIGHT version of THU and the FULL version. Here is a screen grab.

This is the patch

Here is the tone preview

here is the vid talking about the metl x add on pack. It adds a classic piece of rack gear. The SPX90. It's tough to really nail eighties and nineties guitar tone without this one piece. It was on soooo many records back in the day. Sounds amazing.

Johnston's tone is based on a smooth overdrive with a lot of sustain: the combination of a compressor and an overdrive pedal is one of the keys to recreate that tone.
This can be easily achieved in TH-U thanks to its flexible sound chain.
