I've noticed a lot of people who can't tap their foot while playing, so I was wondering how you guys perceive this idea?

For me, tapping my foot to quarter notes, is always a strong internal metronome that rarely let me down during times of need and it also gave me a good flow when jamming with my guitar alone.

Does it help you? Can you do it and if not, why?

Sure, it's very beneficial to create a habit out of it. It helps a lot as Cosmin stated smile.gif

This is something basic, what I teach my students! Rhythm in your head, and a rhythm that you give with your foot, are two entirely different things! If you exercise in the room, without backing tapes or metronome, and you think that is enough to repeat in your head- 1,2,3,4,.....it's a big mistake! This will confirm the first drummer with whom you are gonna play !

When practing I count "1 eh an ah" "2 eh an ah" "3 eh an ah" "4 eh an ah" and tap or just listen for the number (sometimes with the time of a metronome). Works best for me with 16th notes at speed. The alternative picking 4 notes per count seems to come cleaner and easier to keep in time. The "eh an ah" still keeps the time without so much effort counting.

I found out what Sinisa mentioned when starting off the hard way thou.

Cant do it.. If you figure out why, and how to work on it,
it will be my breakthrough point to remember..

Hey mate smile.gif a good start would be to tap your foot over all the recordings you listen to - it'll get into your blood! Then, start with the easiest stuff you can play, tap your foot or nod your head while playing. You'll feel a very good sustain in the rhythmic part when doing so, try it with the easy stuff for starters and see what happens - if you encounter trouble smile.gif let me know and we'll try to sort out a solution wink.gif

It became natural to me over the years...my saxophone teacher only stopped me when I was too much into tapping with the foot than really playing tongue.gif
