Since ive joined this site, ive bought a new guitar and amp.. Ive also played soo much more.. Played yesterday for 7 hours and it went by fast.. Now i have something new to learn and alot of practicing to do... Before i would just put on a metallica cd and jam along with them... My finger tips are sore and my hand if feeling sore from stretching on a pavel lesson... Ive become determined to become the best guitarist i can be... Ive practiced for over 3 hours tonight, i dont even watch tv anymore... I was wondering if anyone else was like this when they first joined?

I started on nylon strings in an acoustic guitar so i developed calluses without having to suffer much pain, when i changed to electric ( steel strings) , my calluses were strong enough to play for huge amounts of time, but its natural to get sore fingers from time to time when you play alot even if you got incredibly hard calluses, happens to me from time to time.

If it hurts alot, like it BURNS, and its uncomfortable, i suggest you stop and chill a little, maybe learn some theory. If its not that bad, well, you could keep playing but be careful

well thats a good thing, but dont forget that in many cases pain leads to injury, and injury might make you unable to play guitar for a longtime or maybe for ever. Just be careful and take care smile.gif

Practicing 7 hours is not recommended if you don't practice regularly 5-6 hours. Your muscels are not used to that sort of training and can be damaged. Maybe the pain will pass, but be aware that later in life you will suffer greatly because of those 7 hours days. Be consistent above all and practice regularly every day, whetter it is 1 hour or 5 hours, just do it on the regular basis and warm up before you do it. This way you greatly reduce any potencial muscle problems in the future.

Hey mate, I developed an injury a while back from doing exactly the same thing - you cant just ride through the pain, if you feel it you need to stop immediately otherwise its only going to get worse! Think about it - you wouldnt play a sport if you had just broken your leg! - Kris will tell you the importance of this, he's got a stickie in his personal forum about injury.

I wrote this article for the wiki that you might find informative: smile.gif

You should have pain as your friend, not an enemy you shall fight against smile.gif

Pain is telling you that either your body is not prepared for what is going through, or that you are doing something in a wrong way. Dealing with pain will not bring you anything good wink.gif
