So I get this email asking me to pay for listens and likes on soundcloud.com. For a small fee they will sell you zombie likes/listens/comments/etc.

That appears to be from a third party site: Soundcloud Fanatic, which has been registered via GoDaddy domain/host. Therefore it's not the official site. I advice ignoring stuff like that.

Yeah there are lots of sites like that one which sell you all kind of views/likes and what not on different social media outlets. It is best to ignore them. Their existence to me really feels useless as I would assume they do not provide real views even though they market them like that. There is no benefit whatsoever in getting more views or likes on any platform if they are not genuine. They will not help you get more exposure and/or subsequent views or likes. In the end, the content you have uploaded is what matters. If people like the song, they will hit the like button or share it. It is that simple. Those sites usually offer views generated by bots using fake accounts. In some cases they might force real people to like your promoted item etc but you can bet they don't even listen to the song etc.

On the other hand, most social media platforms offer some kind of official promotion opportunities which might be worth investing in. Those services are offered by the plaform itself like Facebook, Google (youtube) etc.

Upon further inspection, it does look like a third party site. They just use lots of soundcloud graphics/colors to make it look like it's a soundcloud product. sad.gif

Yup. It's third party after all. Tons of sites like this are popping up. Sites for fake twitter followers, fake facebook likes, etc.

In this day and age where likes etc get you more notice by others, or paying to be a featured artist as they bump you to the top of lists or make you stand out from the others etc, it's akin to record companies paying stations to play their records

Yup!! It's "PAYOLA" at it's finest smile.gif Same thing happening on ALL the social media sites. So companies with deep pockets are buying their way in to your news feed. sad.gif

I suppose it had to happen eventually. Sadly, this the start of a long decline for things like facebook. Remember, myspace didn't die overnight. But it did die. Lost touch with it's user base, started to betray users trust, etc. Sound familiar?

Not exactly 'PAYOLA'.
Your music's still up and listenable by anyone on Soundcloud and FB or wherever whether you pay to get the likes/views/listens or not.

With Payola - if you don't pay - the song doesn't even get introduced or made available to the public.

Very true!! And an important distinction. In the "old days" payola was money/prizes that found it's way from from folks who wanted to get music played on the radio, to folks who worked at/for radio stations (programmers/djs/etc.). If the payola didn't happen, your music might not ever see the light of day.

At least with the advent of Social Media, your music is still there, even if you don't "Pay to Play" so it's more like the "Modern Version of Payola". In a system where there is no barrier to entry (social media) they can't really bribe/charge for entry, they can only charge for whatever is seen to have value, e.g. views/likes/hearts/etc.

Sadly, for folks like soundcloud and facebook, this type of behavior is frowned upon severely by the folks who use the service. I fear this may be the start of the long decline of the established social media outlets now that they have lost so much cred by selling the very metrics that used to provide users with valued information. sad.gif
