Im not sure exactly where to ask this question - but i thought there was a good chance Tony might know!
What exactly is Reverb??
thanks!
It's a multiply reflection of an original soundwave Matt. Like when you stand in a tunnel and shout 'Matt' you may hear after a while 'matt, matt, matt...'. (An echo is the original wave repeated after a short time delay; a reverb is the reflected wave and usually takes a longer time to sound then an echo.)
Every (large enough) space has a reverb characteristic and reverb can add a sense of space and depth to a sound. With modern convolution reverbs you can make yourself sound like you are playing in Madison Square Gardens/Wembley Arena/Sydney Opera House/your local pub toilet rather then your bedroom. With reverb you don't btw usually get a single reflected wave but multiples that start out simple but eventually form a complicated pattern. People often talk about the leading edge/front of the wave where the pattern is simple and the tail where it's complicated.
It can be a nice effect but if you put too many different reverbs in a single mix you'll end up with a bit of a mess. A lot of guitar amps have either a spring reverb or a digital reverb fitted and it can be good to add a bit of body and depth.
Hope that helps,
Cheers,
Tony
Hi Tony, thats a really great explaination - thankyou very much! My Vox AC15 has reverb on it, i wasnt entirley sure how to use it.
Better answer MickeM - you've said in one word what I wanted to say in about 100 . Nice one .
Cheers,
Tony
definitely Jeff . Dare say though that you might need a Mackie big knob for it to work properly after a few beers though .
(Andrew edit if it's too crude)
Cheers,
Tony
ps the Mackie Big knob does exist its a monitor switch
Ok, so now we can create new advertisement:
"Drinking beer? Get and Mackie Big Knob and don't worry about how much you drink!"
I wish i knew what you guys are talking about
Rude Andrew? Never crossed my mind, honest
Cheers,
Tony
Only you guys could make a thread about reverb this crazy!
Crazy Matt?
Jeff and I were having a very serious conversation about studio equipment . Honest
Cheers,
Tony
