If you already have a good amount of gain then just a bit of overdrive on top will do the job. I do it all the time when playing live. I leave amp gain for the rhythm and switch on the overdrive pedal when soloing.

I will suggest checking out the Timmy pedal or Danelectro Transparent Overdrive. They will do the job without changing the tone.

If you want something cheap, go for Boss SD1. It adds light overdrive, goes along great with ANY amp overdrive, and increases midrange slightly so it may serve as a boost in band situation. Downside is that it removes some of the bottom end, but for that price it's great.
If you want something better, I recommend tubescreamer. No words there, well known classic overdrive with good boost possibilities. My personal advice would be to get some quality booster pedal. BB Preamp, or something along those lines would add extra grunt and preserve the tone nicely. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

I just want to add one more interesting boost pedal to the list - MXR Micro Amp. It will give you a nice clean boost when its needed!
