Question About Distortion/overdrive Pedals

I have a Peavey Valveking 112 which I absolutely love. The tone is great, and I get plenty of gain from it when I need it.

But, I would like to add a bit more grunt to my sound on occasion, and so have been looking at various pedals.

Now, my problem is, distortion pedals. When I have my gain up on the amp, and I use a distortion pedal, it just gets insanely noisy and messy. Yet, I've read plenty of interviews/gear talks where guitarists say they use a Boss Metal Distortion(just as example) for that extra push when they need it.

So my question is how do I use a distortion pedal properly to get that extra bit or should I just use an overdrive?

If you already have a good amount of gain then just a bit of overdrive on top will do the job. I do it all the time when playing live. I leave amp gain for the rhythm and switch on the overdrive pedal when soloing.

I will suggest checking out the Timmy pedal or Danelectro Transparent Overdrive. They will do the job without changing the tone.

If you want something cheap, go for Boss SD1. It adds light overdrive, goes along great with ANY amp overdrive, and increases midrange slightly so it may serve as a boost in band situation. Downside is that it removes some of the bottom end, but for that price it's great.
If you want something better, I recommend tubescreamer. No words there, well known classic overdrive with good boost possibilities.
My personal advice would be to get some quality booster pedal. BB Preamp, or something along those lines would add extra grunt and preserve the tone nicely.

I would recommend you to try out some Tubescreamer clone..
See if you can find the T.C. Electronics vintage overdrive pedal..
It is not made anymore so it is perhaps a bit hard to find.. On the other hand this will probably also mean that it is cheap if you do find it.. It sounds alot like the OCD / Tubescreamer..

Great, thanks guys smile.gif

I'm headed to Guitar Center in a few days, and luckily I have 2 fairly close together and they typically have different stock, so I'll be checking out as many pedals as I can.

Also, what are your opinions on the Boss OD-3 and the OS-2?

And looking at Tubescreamers, I see that Ibanez has 4 versions, the TS808HW, TS808, TS9DX and the TS9. Just wondering if anyone has played through these, and what your thoughts on them are.

And again, thanks a lot.

+1

As Ivan said, the SD1 is a great pedal. I actually prefer it over the TS9.

I just want to add one more interesting boost pedal to the list - MXR Micro Amp. It will give you a nice clean boost when its needed! smile.gif
