III. Floyd Rose Problems " My Floyd goes out of tune when I use it....why?" is a question I hear alot. The Floyd Rose trem is really a great device......but, as with most things mechanical, it does require some special attention. First, let's look at the Floyd. Usually, a Floyd is a double locking trem system. That means that the strings are clamped at the tremolo and clamped down at the top of the fretboard in the locking nut. Older style Floyds are single locking , meaning, the strings are either locked at the trem or at the locking nut on the headstock...but, not at both. Alot of the older style Floyd Rose copies didn't require you to cut the ball off of the string.......you simply just slid the string through a hole in the trem and it came out through the trem saddle. There are many variations to the Floyd Rose and its copies ( copied Floyds will usually say "Patented under Floyd Rose"). That does not make it a REAL FLoyd...it just means they used the design with permission from Floyd Rose. Most copies are not as good as a real Floyd.....we will get into that later. Maintaining your Floyd is important to the longevity of it as well as it performing flawlessly. Not only does it need cleaned, it needs lubed also. When you do a string change, remove the Floyd completely. You will see on the trem itself the " knife edge ". This is where the trem pivots in the trem studs. I use a product called Anti-Seize from 3M. I use the brush and place a small amount all the way around the trem posts where the knife edge rests. Lubing is very important key to a smooth operation and from damaging the knife adge and the pivot areas on the studs. It also doesnt hurt to take a Q-tip lightly saturated in 3-in-1 oil and dab onto the top of all the allen screws. The oil will soak down to the threads and help keep them from seizing up due to sweat and moisture. If for some reason you remove the saddles from a Floyd, make sure they go back in the exact same place you removed it from. The saddles have different heights to accomodate the radius of the fret board. You will notice numbers on the bottom of the saddles. These are location numbers and represent the different heights of the saddles. Write them on a piece of paper as to what string they went to. So, now to the original question: " My Floyd goes out of tune when I use it....why?" There is usually one main reason this happens. The knife edge has sustained damage. From lack of being maintained, it has literally got gouges on the knife edge causing it to hang up in a different tuning. There are possible fixes for this. Take small hand files or emory cloth and smooth out those gouges. The trem posts where the knife edge rests probly has some damage too......parts that work together, wear together. Again, smooth out the gouges in the trem posts. slean it up, lube it up and re-assemble. Sometimes, the knife edge and the trem posts have been so damaged, you will have to replace the pieces. Some Floyd copies just don't compare to the Original Floyd Rose( aka OFR). The reason is because the OFR is made from forged steel. Alot of the copies are cast or molded. They are lighter in density, porous internally and just aren't as reliable. The only copy I have seen that actually compares to the OFR in my opinion is the Shaller Floyd Rose copy......this is because they are made in the same factory with the same material. The Ibanez Lo-Pro and Lo-Pro II are decent ,but, not as nice as the OFR. probably not what your looking for, but lets rule out all the known problems.
