GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ How Avoid Unwanted Advertizements On The Internet

Posted by: Amir Razmara Jan 5 2012, 10:29 AM

Recently, I've been noticing the appearance of unwanted Advertizements while watching videos on youtube !!! same case with some other sites I go to or even when I'm checking my yahoo e-mail !!! This problem started less than 2 weeks ago, during the last 4 years I have had a good online experience without any kind of rubbish Advertizements, I have good internet security and also have "add block" , but now it seems like something is going wrong because all this popup adds making their way through? are you experiencing the same problem?
I would appreciate if anyone can give suggestions as to what can be done about this problem. other words what can be done essentially so you won't waste time removing each individual add every time they appear?
I feel I am speaking on behalf of lots of those who want to be free of Advertizements.

I use AdBlock Plus as an add-on in Firefox, and I don't get adverts at all.

If you're using the same, but recently started getting them again, check your settings for AdBlock Plus and do a full system virus scan (would be better if you did the scan on booting your PC).

I don't know about popup ads but if you mean the ads that appear at the bottom of Yourtube videos then that is possibly because Youtube users are 'montetizing' their videos.. allowing ads to be put on their videos for a small financial return. Most of us are doing it now wink.gif (although I haven't seen any financial return, but hey..)

Well, I think these commercial are fair deal to make on the site such is YT. I didn't have any problems on other sites tho, and I'm using Firefox. What browser are you using?

I saw a news program on TV a few weeks (I think it was 20/20) ago and it talked about how people can make really good money from advertising if they get enough hits on their You Tube posts. From what Ben said, I have the impression that they check with the person that post the video first. Personally, I would rather have to "x" out of a pop-up than have You Tube start charging us for using it. smile.gif They do have to make their money somehow! laugh.gif

I have started to see some graphic ads that fill up almost half the youtube video player screen. When those adds appear, video stops and I have to click "x" and play on the video. Its a bit annoying. Are you guys seeing those too?

I would usually see just small text ads bellow the video which don't affect video playback.

I hate every time that Youtube stops the video that I'm seeing to show me an advertising! I think that it's impossible to avoid...

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Jan 5 2012, 02:45 PM

Hmm, yeah I usually get some graphic ads lately on YT as well, they take bigger part of the screen then before (with text ones). I hope they will not implement these commercials into playback, like you can see it on some other sites sad.gif

I noticed lately that the ads become more and more "intelligent", meaning they advertize stuff that I looked at lately! Must be some sort of "legal spyware". Suddenly there's guitar gear all over the place in the ads... wink.gif nothing else...believe me.

I happens here in Argentina! The videoclip stops and you have to see the publicity... sometimes at the beginning of the video sometimes in the middle of it! ldskmcfldmfldkmfldkmfl blink.gif mad.gif

That would be annoying. I either get a small advertisement about 15 seconds long at the beginning or I will get a little window that comes up (does not really block the video) from my internet service provider. I've never had a video interrupted but it sounds like it may be happening soon. sad.gif

Commercial nature of these sites pushes them to serve more and more ads to consumers. Of course, Google knows better what we need then ourselves unsure.gif I recently put Waves plugin here on GMC, asking if someone used it, and I can't get it off my ads, it's forcing me to buy it now biggrin.gif

Well, I don't mind (for now), as long as a fair balance is being achieved. No point in making ads bigger and longer, or it will have negative effect on view counts.

So you guys are also seeing these graphic ads on YT, yes there are annoying mad.gif so if this is something that has just started there may not be a solution to avoid it at this time, but hopefully there will be soon, and you guys let us know if you find any solutions. I personally don't wanna have to deal with advertizements, because if you calculate the amount of time they will take from us over time it all adds up.

After reading this, I was watching an especially long clip on You Tube and this exact thing happened. It stopped the movie every once in a while and did a commercial. Like I said in my previous post, I know they have to make money somehow...... however, it was very irritating and I closed the window. Looking at the status bar, it had a yellow spot where each commercial would fall and I tried to go past it. It did let me do that...... after it showed the advertisement. sad.gif I'm glad GMC does not do that! laugh.gif

Wow, that stinks. The way the that TV show explained it, if your clip gets a lot of hits, you can make good money. Maybe they changed it?

You can make money out of clips, but it's not a big money, it's just a small percentage. You have to have huge view counts to be able to get something more serious (serious as living out of it).

I'm really glad Kris gives us such an affordable web site without all the adverts! Could you imagine this: "Are you tired of playing like this? AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS and want to sound something a little like this? AND NOW ANOTHER WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS (from Ivan's Pentatonic Workshop) laugh.gif

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Jan 6 2012, 01:31 PM

Well, I wanted to become a Youtube Partner, but unfortunately they don't do it in Romania. I would then be responsible for the popups you guys hate tongue.gif
