We seriously need one of these. Premiership season is only 3 weeks away and I seriously can't wait. Hopefully Man City will crumble as usual and finish around 8th place. Hull are seriously buggered. I've never seen such bad transfer activity and they are serious contenders to finish bottom.

Man United, despite losing Ronaldo and Tevez, have looked pretty strong in their friendlies so far. Owen has looked to be the buy of the transfer window. All he needs to do is stand infront of the goal which I'm fairly sure he's capable of. On a free as well so no one can complain. Still reckon they could do with buying David Silva, someone with proven quality. Liverpool also look strong, so will be interesting to see what unfolds throughout the season. Unfortunately for Arsenal they're lacking cover and consistent quality and will probably struggle for a top 4 finish this season. Chelsea haven't really been that active but still obviously have enough quality to challenge.

It's also great to see Newcastle in such a mess. It must be terrible for the fans, but the club is run so badly it was bound to happen. They've been on a downward spiral for years now. Viduka is now a free agent, they've lost Owen, and now Martins is gone. So that leaves them with what? Caroll, Ameobi and Smith? Anyone else? Serious alarm bells.

Away from England Real Madrid have seriously slowed down their transfer activity. Don't reckon they'll set the world alight like many think. Yeah they have the indiviudual talent, but can they come out and play like the current Barcelona team? I don't think. Although Ronaldo finally got his first goal for Real. Penalty of course which he won by, yep, diving. So glad he's gone.

So yeah everyone get chatting about football, any level, any country. Go.

I love to play Football but watch........ Not something i do very often.......

Only when is the world cup

I was a big fan of Juventus when I was a child. Then I lost interest about this sport even I enjoy to play occasionally with some friends.

Posted by: Canis Jul 30 2009, 12:42 AM

I've always supported Chelsea, but it can be interesting now over the new year... Mame Biram Diouf, a player from my local team here in Norway, has just been bought by Man U.
I love the guy, but becoming a Man U fan now would make myself a "sellout" laugh.gif

We'll see how it goes tongue.gif

I checked that guy out on youtube. He seems like a good little finisher. He's gone back out on loan to Molde FK (is it?) until January. What's he like beyond the youtube highlights?

Pedja is going to love this thread smile.gif I am also into this sport quite a lot but not as much as him. He knows every possible European team even from 2nd ligues. I also can't wait premiership. I don't have favorite team here in the UK but like to watch all matches. Speaking about other European clubs I think that Barcelona is going to get champions league once again and Wolfsburg get the German ligue as well.

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jul 30 2009, 01:36 AM

There's already a football thread, unless it has been deleted.

None the less, I would consider myself much of expert regarding English from lower to higher division and a massive fan of Tottenham.

We just bought Crouch. It will hopefully be a good buy. It offers a different dimension to our game, even though we already have "tall" strikers. But there is a difference between Pavlyuchenko's 188cm and Crouch's 201cm. But it might also mean that either Pavlyuchenko or Bent is on their way out. Most likely Bent, as he is not playing in China at the moment.

If we get Huntelaar, as we are also after, I suspect Pavlyuchenko to go too.

I also suspect to see Hutton leave, and Giovani Dos Santos might also leave, as Redknapp is not to keen on him, even though he was Player of the Tournament in a recent international tournament. I hope he stays, and if anything is loaned out.

Yep, Molde FK get's to keep him out this season, luckily.. If not, chances are we're screwed tongue.gif
Molde is #2 on the charts at the moment, and hadn't it been for Mame, we would problably be on the lower half. He has been the "Player of the Match" almost as many times as we have matches played.
Man U have bought themselves a fine player, if they only let him on wink.gif

I find the situation kinda funny, really... Since Ole Gunnar Solskjær aka "Sunny" who also played for Man U, came from Molde as well ^^

I feel sorry for the rest of the world being stuck with soccer. I am pretty sure that if space aliens come, they will be bemused at why all these people watch soccer in most places, and football in this other one location. But that could be to our advantage, they might decide to exterminate 95% of humans, and let us live, as they might misinterpret this to indicate that the football watchers must be the more intelligent of the species.

I mean think about it. This one group watches a game that is complex, both a thinking man's game, a chess match, and also with incredible athleticism and brutality and all that fun stuff. And the rest watch this game where you can take a nap, pretty assured that when you wake up, that you missed nothing of importance. Nobody scored, and nobody got carried away on a stretcher. What can you expect Space Aliens to conclude when they see that?

Hull just don't seem to be an interesting place for players. Even Nugent has said no to them rolleyes.gif . Must be No 1 candidate for the drop.

Liverpool were looking fine until Alonso handed in his transfer request this morning. Even with a replacement I can't see them finishing better than 3rd behind Chelsea and Man U. Chelsea and Man U are both still strong squads. Presumably Man U will play Owen as a super sub...

Good to see both Everton - at least for now - and Chelsea telling Man City to get lost over transfers. City have an 'interesting' team - too many personalities and a lack of balance. I really can't see them challenging for top 5 this year since I think they'll take a long time to sort themselves out.

Will be interesting to see how Arsene and Arsenal spend their new transfer funds. If he spends well - and he usually does - they'll remain top 4.

Villa need to add but apart from buying one player who's out injured til January haven't yet done so.
Everton are the same - we need to bring in some first team players, RB and DM at least plus a RW would be good but we probably have no money. Come October though we'll have major players coming back after injuries and if we can keep the team injury free we'll be ok.

Spurs I can't see them doing better than mid table despite their Summer signings.

Top 4 this year (in no particular order): Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool. Plus Everton and Villa fighting it out for 5th and 6th again.

Bar codes. 6-1 to Orient laugh.gif .

Or football in the entire world and soccer in the US. We separate the two as football and American football so the term "soccer" would be quite local. Unless the space aliens speak american english of course...

Myself I'm not so team oriented but rather enjoy watching good players no matter which team they are in and good games no matter who plays whom.

I'm a Rovers fan and the signings so far seem pretty good. We don't have same budget as the big 4 (or 5 perhaps) but I think we'll manage this season as well. We won't take home the trophy but we won't get kicked out either.

And as for the incredible well played Swedish league (NOT!), my heart goes out for Malmö FF

Emir is right, I definitely love this thread ! smile.gif

Actually I was very upset because my team Partizan Belgrade lost last night 2-0 away against Apoel Nicozia (Cyprus). They played 1st leg of 3rd qualifying round for Champions league. What makes me even more upset is that I won't be able to see 2nd leg in Belgrade which is on 5th of August! I travel to Greece for 10 days, leaving on 3rd and now when my team needs the most support I can't provide it. Its just not the same watching it on TV and being on the stands cheering shouting etc smile.gif
This year I bought season ticket for Partizan Belgrade which includes all friendly games, qualifying for European leagues, cup and league home games. Plan to go to every single game this year! For last two seasons we won 4 trophies (championship + cup) so we are all hoping to repeat that success this year as well smile.gif

Regarding other teams in Europe... I think Barcelona will still be the best team. Nobody can beat Xavi Iniesta Henry and Messi! They are just best and can hold the ball 90 minutes period smile.gif Wondering how Zlatan Ibrahimovic will fit into Barca's squad. He can be very selfish player at times and not assist the teammates. Barca is all about team play so I hope Pepe Gvardiola will be able to use Zlatans technique and skill in a good way.

Real Madrid will as usual spend a lot of money (what a waste!) and win nothing smile.gif They always lack team spirit. Look the players they had in the team last season. Robben ? That guy needs two balls to play the game, he is all about holding the ball and passing to no one. I think similar faith awaits C Ronaldo. Kaka is amazing player but I can't say for sure if he will fit into Reals squad or not.

Will comment more in future in this thread, gotta finish my lesson now smile.gif

Haha. I will get you back on it when you hear this story !

My first ever Premier League game I saw in London LIVE was Totenham vs Charlton at White Hart Line. Totenham won and I was in VIP lounge because starting eleven goalkeeper for Charlton was good friend of mine Sasa Ilic (Serbian guy).

Did that do it ?

I went to see Totenham maybe 3 or 4 times more at White Hart Line because there was one Serbian guy who was supporter of them so I went with him to Spurs games smile.gif

You're supposed to be in for Huntelaar and possibly Vieira with Bent off to Sunderland Cael. At this point in time with out Huntelaar in and Bent out your net spend is the second or third highest - highest is City.

Spurs are also linked with an awful lot of other players so I do agree that you haven't stopped spending - just like City haven't.

SJ - I'd assume Arsenal will now be looking for transfers in with the large amount of cash City have given them this week and I think Arsene will spend it wisely smile.gif .

True, it's in generel been a very quite window. I can't remember the price tag of the two young left/right backs, but I think it was 3m a piece. Crouch was about 9m. That adds up to 15 million pounds. It's not a lot, and I think in generel it says more about the window than us.

I know we're in for a lot of other players - I actually have a list of most of the players rumored to come to us. It adds up to 70 or more. Though he has a grim past I wouldn't mind seeing Viera at Spurs.

If we sell Bent and another few our net spend will be about 0. Daniel Levy runs the economy side of the club very well. Though we've bought many players during the last few years, one has to consider the out goings as well. Robbie Keane and Berbatov brought in 50 mill.

I think the two Kyles were at least 10m. Everton had agreed 5m just for Naughton according to SUFC but you offered at least 10m for both with one back on loan. Crouch was supposed to go to Sunderland for 12m but didn't want to go north so I think he went to you for 10m - good deal imho, well worth 10m as he'll score quite a few. Bent to Sunderland - maybe 12-15m so a good deal if you get Huntelaar for 10-12m? Keane and LFC - wink.gif. At the mo it's really only city who are throwing cash about though...

He has SJ, he has. I've a lot of time for Arsenal because you've developed and bought wisely rather than just thrown cash about. I think we (EFC) are pretty much trying the same mate. An example I think we're trying to follow though the press hate us for it. (How I hate Sky when they forget that we've been in the top 4 once and been top 5 regularly for the last 5 years. Oh wait Sky news flash - MCFC to challenge for 5th and break in to the top 4 rolleyes.gif dry.gif .)

More seriously - IF LFC do lose Alonso and Masch I think they'll struggle more than Arsenal to stay top 4. And it looks like Alonso is gone...

Posted by: Duncan Jul 30 2009, 11:28 PM

Spurs are just one of those teams that screams average. Getting rid of Bent would be great though. He is terrible. Huntelaar would be a quality signing, I really do rate him. I still can't see Spurs doing that well though. Why anyone would want to buy Crouch I do not know. I don't care what anyone says he is useless. Watching him week in week out last season only confirmed my thoughts, but no one else seems to see it! He has no first touch is useless with both feet and unbelievably average in the air. Just because he has a foot headstart on most balls into the box doesn't mean he will put it away. And don't even get me started on his England performances.

Robson on his time at Newcastle:

"A number of councillors wrote to me to say they had never seen so much emotion in a ceremony of that kind. Perhaps it was because I had talked about my father, and how he went down the pit white and came up black, in an area where the two colours symbolise a city's love of football, a love that burns within me and will never fade."

I'm so crushed. He was the most likeable person in football.

We, Partizan Belgrade fans have great memory of him. 2003 Champions League qualifier 3rd round. First game we lost in Belgrade (0-1 was result) but then away managed to come back with 1-0. We than played extra time which resulted in penalties and we went through. That is the first time some team in Serbia managed to enter Champions league from creation of new country.

I think exactly the same. Too many leaders, and that's where human vanity takes it's place. After all somebody has to run without stopping whole game and "stars" don't want to do that. I would like to add Beckham and Figo to your list.

I did a team just recently

I have such respect for Arsene Wenger. Having a stategy for building a team and sticking with it, despite calls for him to sign big named players. Unfortunately I still don't think Arsenal are big enough to win something, but when they play well its an absolute joy to watch.

Also anyone else for the fantasy league?

Fully deserved 2-1 win! Great goals, great games! We're off to a great start this season!

Horrible people at Upton Park the other night. Collison is a complete hero. His dad died in a motorcycle accident not long before the match but chose to play the game which is very admirable. He was taking a corner, and was being taunted about his father by Millwall fans and looked a bit 'dazed' SSN said, but rather than reacting he got on with it. He was crying coming off the pitch at the end though.

I saw news today I was like "Damn!". I thought that those things only happened here. Hahaha.
Talking 'bout Premiere, I saw this past weekend Liverpool - Fullham and it was a totally unfair score. Fullham reached only 3 times Liverpool's goal and they scored those 3 times. And Liverpool was totally the oposite. They play enough well to score more goals but, as Menotti (an Argentinian Trainer) said "Matches aren't deserved. You have to win the match"

Posted by: Duncan Aug 27 2009, 11:50 AM

Trying to decode your reply I assume you mean the Liverpool/Aston Villa game? Yeah Liverpool had enough shots on target but a lot of the time that was just Gerrard trying his luck from distance, especially towards the end of the game.

Posted by: Sergio Dorado Aug 27 2009, 12:18 PM

The only thing that maked Barcelona winned Champions last year was the Great Robbery to Chelsea in Stamford Bridge in semifinals. English press considered the greatest raid in the history of Champions (5 penalties, at least 3 absolutely clear that referee didn´t admit).
But, you knows, Platini is Barça supporter.

Only one club has 9 Champions- Real Madrid. And, the most important thing, all winned in a legal way. smile.gif

Also. Come on people. There must be more than 2 of us doing a fantasy team this year. I want to get a league going.

Posted by: Emir Hot Sep 9 2009, 08:43 AM

There are some really good matches tonight. Bosnia is playing against Turkey. If they win it will give them 95% chance to go to the World Cup for the first time. Another killer match will be at London's Wembley, England - Croatia. If England wins they are qualified but Croatia will then have about 60% chance by the end of qualifications. Croatia won against England 3:2 on the same stadium and this could be a big revenge as Croatia won't have 3 key players. There are some interesting matches in other groups where anything can happen.

Posted by: superize Sep 9 2009, 09:07 AM

Malta-Sweden tonight should be easy victory

Portugal is going to miss the world cup -.-

Posted by: Ulrik Sep 9 2009, 10:34 AM

1 Denmark 7 5 2 0 14-3 11 17
2 Hungary 7 4 1 2 9-4 5 13
3 Sweden 7 3 3 1 8-3 5 12
4 Portugal 7 2 4 1 9-5 4 10
5 Albania 8 1 3 4 4-8 -4 6
6 Malta 8 0 1 7 0-21 -21 1

Denmark will beat Albania today and have 20 points with 2 games left.
There is a possibility that Sweden wins 3 matches in a row and ends with 21 points, but i think Denmark is quite safe in front. Hungary has 2 matches against Portugal, and they won't win both so they are out.

I think it will end like this in group 1:

1 Denmark
2 Sweden
3 Portugal
4 Hungary
5 Albania
6 Malta

Posted by: Rated Htr Sep 9 2009, 10:40 AM

Only the first two pass right?

Why???? (yes I know, it's about money and agreements, but it sucks. I'll have to go some place public and I'm not particularly fond of people smile.gif )

I'm not sure. I can look into it. But I think it is only number 1 and some of the best second places.
There are 9 UEFA groups, and we don't get 18 European teams qualified i think. Its 11 or 12 teams.

Posted by: Rated Htr Sep 9 2009, 10:53 AM

ok, so Portugal is out biggrin.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: Ulrik Sep 9 2009, 10:54 AM

Just looked at Fifa.com
There are 53 European countries playing, and 13 goes through.
So the 9 first, and only 4 second places.

So Portugal has close to zero chance

Posted by: Rated Htr Sep 9 2009, 11:02 AM

Serbia drew with France 1-1 in Belgrade. We scored early from penalty, had extra player for over 70 minutes and manage to get a silly goal (goalkeeper let the ball from his hands to Henry) for 1-1 final score. Serbia now needs only 3 points from remaining 2 games (Romania in Belgrade and Litvania away). Even 2 points (2 draws) work in hour favor, so we are 99% qualified directly for world cup!

England wiped the floor with Croatia 5-1 and most goals with headers! It could have been 3 or 4 goals more for England in the first half but Croatia's keeper Runje saved them from total catastrophy (like this isn't one already biggrin.gif

I am surprised Denmark wasn't able to beat Albania away and use that game to directly qualify for world cup. They had chance in the previous game to do that as well but failed. Wonder whats happening with those guys ...

I agree. They started this seasson really good. Modric will need 2 more months to recover but I think they can do it smile.gif

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Sep 10 2009, 06:17 PM

Even though Niko Kranjcar is no Modric, I believe he will be in there to try and gain a spot in the Start 11. We got a bargain on that one paying just about 2 mill. pounds, according to the rumors. Hopefully, though the rumors says otherwise, I believe King and Woodgate or Bassong will be ready for the match too. Lennon was on fire for England and he apparently always enjoys playing against Evra, who will definitely need to be on his marks.

It's only an advantage regarding the league that Everton and Aston Villa has been off to a bad start. They were to be up there fighting for the 7th to 4th spot, but they're off the race now. Laursen and Barry meant too much to Villa for them to bear the loss of those players, and the whole Everton thing with Lescott just reminds me off us and Berbatov last year. That leaves everything open this year.

Not if King is playing.

We were all over United last season in the 5-2 loss, leading 2-0 when suddenly the referee thought "oh, United is behind... we need to give them a penanlty for nothing at all".

Few seasons prior to that we were cheated as well, when Roy Caroll lost the ball and it like... almost hit the back of the net and the referee said: "no goal"...

It makes my blood boil in how those things unfair just always seem to fall out to United's favor. mad.gif

Yes I remember that game and penalty that shock fans all over globe smile.gif
Manchester must win this game to start building good results and form. Spurs without Modric are without ideas. Kranjcar is not great player and he can't play against Manchester. I can see Spurs scoring one goal perhaps on counter attack with Lennon and Keane but other than this its win for Manchester with Vidic in the back and Rooney up front smile.gif

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Sep 10 2009, 06:42 PM

As said... King is playing as well as ever, he is without a doubt one of the best defenders in the league, and he isn't even training.

Our record against the Top 4 sides have been amazing lately. From the top of my head:

Arsenal - 4-4
Arsenal - 0-0
United - 0-0
Liverpool - 4-2
Liverpool - 2-1
Liverpool - 2-1
Chelsea - 4-4
Chelsea - 1-0
Chelsea - 0-1
United - 2-5
Liverpool - 1-3.

Yeah RVP can be a complete rodhead as well but his tackle wasn't all that bad. If the intent was there I guess we'll never know but it was clear Adebayor meant to rake his face. I've seen loads of City fans on 606 saying Arsenal fans deserved to have their noses rubbed in Ade's goal, "can give it but can't take it" etc. The fact is that Adebayor is a football player and therefore has a responsibility to not behave like a provocative idiot.

Hahaha. A good prediction. Harry got the tactics wrong from the beginning unfortunately. Besides that the substitution of Corluka for Hutton was just terrible. Hutton really can't defend if it meant his life.

As Harry says himself we started playing long balls for Crouch way to early. Should have substituted him for Pavlyuchenko. Crouch was getting nowhere, getting fouls blown against him etc. Should have kept the ball on the floor instead.

As I said though: would have been a good game to win, but not a bad one to lose, as it's one of those games you would normally expect to lose. If we have to lose 8 games during the season, it's best to lose them against top 4 and not bottom 4 as we usually do. Get the points where it's easiest to get them.

But anyway, we all now that it's more important to play the guitar instead of a game where 22 people are chasing the stomach of a cow.....

I agree! As long as you run around on stage and headbang you'll get your exercise biggrin.gif

They killed Wigan today 9:1. Even Kranjcar scored. Amazing.

Kranjcar has been scoring a few lately though. Scored against Bolton. Defoe scored 5, besides that Lennon, Benley, Crouch and Kranjcar scored. Great game, and though Wigan didn't play very well, it was much because we played very well and took all our chances.

Imagine if Modric was there, I believe they would have scored 5:0 in the first half smile.gif

Had we won by 15 goals, we would have been 3rd now. laugh.gif

But it still just goes to show that we rely very much on Lennon and Modric being fit.

Little bit. Champions League: Messi did 3 yesterday, Ronaldo did 3 day before. Chelsea lost surprisingly. I watched Manu - Leverkusen. If you let Rooney have the ball when you're are last defender - you're in a trouble tongue.gif

I'm a Manchester United fan but unfortunately here in the states - you're lucky to catch maybe one game a year with my local programming sad.gif

I'm sure you could find a stream online to watch some games smile.gif

Also, now onto penalty shootout in the final. I was hoping for some goals during the game, but it was a good and high tempo 0-0.

Not a good result for Argentina! The penalties they took weren't that good compared to Chile.

Liverpool all through. Had a decent start yesterday to get back to Champions League. Well, hopes are always big for my club. Results have been missing lately.
