Discovering New Lead Shapes, how do you do it? Options

Muris, how do you discover new territory note-wise when you practice? Do you practice with a recorded backing track of, say, an unusual chord progression? I was thinking that, for instance, to make myself play something I'm not used to, I would think that I need a recording of unusual, at least for me, tracks to force me to improvise differently than what I would normally fall back on patterns-wise. I was thinking in terms of trying to come up with something exotic in the jazz/rock fusion idiom. Also, and you need to check this guy out if you haven't already, I watched Marco Sfogli playing his song Andromeda on Youtube...notice how his backing track is rock all the way, but a real cool progression. He's playing the same kind of exotic stuff you do. How do you guys discover the exotic stuff? Do you spell out the chords and , for instance, arpeggiate them? Thanks ahead of time, my friend.

So , how do I discover new territory note-wise when I practice?
Seems like you offered me the answer as well
cause I find most of those territories while I'm practicing.
I usually don't use backings when I practice,
I just play random licks,some exercises etc.
And somehow I run into some nice sounding chop/s
while hearing chord/s in my head.
Of course you need to have fair knowledge of theory
to actually understand what is it that you just played.
On the other hand,most of the time we are just expanding
licks that we know from before,licks that we heard somewhere.
That'd be it,it just comes up while you play/practice
BUT also try to listen to other players and try to learn
as much as possible from them,that's the safest way to expand
your lick library and knowledge in general.

Thanks, man. Yeah, that's what I do too. I'm thinking about getting one of those Tascam CD players that slows down licks to half-speed, but keeps them in tune. That way, I can learn Govan, or Howe, or your stuff, and analyze it that way. I wish they had this technology 25 years ago!
