I've owned a few different audio interfaces and thought I'd share my experience and invite others to do the same. I just added a Tascam M-164UF to my home studio and I love it so far. It's a and 16 channel mixer/recording interface and connects via usb 2.0. There is no perceptible lag or delay when recording which is great. This device can be had for about $300 US and is an amazing value. So far It's the best interface I"ve ever had. It's PC and Mac comptitble, works with any DAW and the Mic preamps sound great especially for the price. It's not a Pro level unit Ala ProTools HD, but the gap betwen prosumer and pro continues to narrow. Here are a couple of pix.

It will let you record 16 tracks (6 with their own mic pre-amp) at once in to whatever software you are using. So if you want to record a drum kit, or just put several mics on your guitar rig, it's no problem. My previous units had one or two XLR inputs and recorded one or two channels at a time, this one has 6 xlr inputs and does 16 tracks at once. More review to follow as I continue to record with it.

here's my setup example

maximum of 12 I/O @ 48K, DSP effects and zero latency monitoring. Only two inputs available @ 192K.

I expanded two line inputs on the card with 8 more:

8 preamps, 2 Hi-Z inputs, and puts out mirrored 44.1K or 48K or single channel 88.2K and 96K via ADAT outs

everything else is software

Just to be clear, this does NOT have firewire, it uses USB 2.0. All my previous interfaces were Firewire and I was really suspect on USB 2.0 as I'd heard about latency/lag issues. The good new is that there isn't any perceptible latency on this unit at all. latency is the enemy of recording. It's so handy to have all those extra inputs. I'm now using several Mics on my guitar rig and mixing them together, panning them, etc.

The pre-amps are shockingly good, especially considering the price. The unit has a "list price" of about $400 U.S. but many vendors are cutting the price as it's a new product line with no user history and they want to move them. I found it at Sweetwater.com for under $300 so deals are around.

Ivan's rig looks NIIIIIIIIICE! The focus rite pre amps are great. His setup is much more high end than this and what I typically see in smaller pro studios here around town. The MOTU rack units are also popular though not quite as nice as the focusrite pre-amps.

For my home rig, I always try to keep costs low, but still make good quality recordings. This unit is the most bang for the buck that I could find that still sounds good. I tested it against other units in the same price range and was blown away. Two M-audio units, and another previous Tascam unit were among them. It wasn't even close. Then I saw it on sale just after it was released and just had to try it. In short, I'm really happy with this and would suggest it to anyone looking for a small mixer/interface.

*Keep in mind though that I'm working on a Macintosh, so PC experience may vary.

Todd
