It's a minor mode.. the guitar lick after the first verse reveals a major 6th, making it dorian. Right?
I believe this is a Dorian flavor Oops, I was waaaay late. |

Ok I hope I am not jumping the gun here before it is confirmed, but I am fairly certain it is Dorian so here is the next song.

One would be tempted to guess lydian, but I'd say ionian on this one. Not that I quite understand this piece though.

I'm late ...
The 'Joe' is all Mixo. (There's a couple of minor 3rd screams in there though and he sort of squeezes em up so 1/2 b m3s). This post has been edited by klasaine: Feb 4 2013, 09:39 AM -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

My own answer (to my own question?) is Lydian - I have no idea if that's right or not though |

The Vai generally sounds like Mixo but I swear I hear a natural 7th in there sometimes when he goes to the V chord.
But anyway, the dominant sound is certainly 'dominant' on that track. Here's mine. Just the main melody. Not a full scale in the traditional western definition but guitarists will be familiar with it (that's a hint) and the guitarist and violinist do bend/slide almost to a major 3 at one point in the melody where the rest of it is minor 3rds (that's another hint). What makes this relatively simple scale sound so cool/weird in this context is the backing - both the chords as well as the time signature. Melody (scale) starts at 1:04 ... The melody ends at 1:27 and all bets are off at that point (though he does get back into it again and constantly revisits the original scale/mode ... in very obvious way once you know it). Extra credit for chords and time sig (multiple answers for the time sig) This post has been edited by klasaine: Feb 4 2013, 06:02 PM -------------------- - Ken Lasaine
