Wrist Pain

I hope this is the right section for this kind of topic...I have a pain at the wrist(left hand)...let's say that i play for three days in a row ...3 hours per day and in the fourth day i start to notice a pain in my wrist while i'm playing...have somebody experienced that before?...this pain is very annoying and it hurts very much...and if somebody knows how can i get rid of it?

I've had probably something similar, it was when I got back to playing guitar again, and I played for like 3-8 hours a day, and after 3 days I got a pain from my wrist to well the end of my lower arm, both right & left, and well I automaticly stopped playing for 3-8 hours a day, since it hurt, and then the pain just went away after a few days smile.gif.

Besides that the fastest way to get the pain away is to stop playing for a few days, and then start again when its gone, and the smartest probably, since pain is pretty bad, but if you're just sore thats okay smile.gif

I thought of stopping to play for some days and i did it.. it disappeared and then i start playing again and after a week or so...the pain reappeared...maybe i have a problem of positioning ...i don't know...o i press too hard on the strings...i'll see how it feels tomorrow ...i hope it will be fine. The pain i'm experiencing now is not that big , but once i had a hell of a pain and i couldn't play the guitar for one or two weeks...

You should consider going to a doctor specialist just in case mate. It's probably nothing serious, but it would be very wise to go nonetheless.

As for pain, it happens. Our hands are being moved by muscles, and there are lots of problems you can cause to your muscle, nerve and cardiovascular systems. You need to properly warm up before practicing, and take regular breaks, just like a sportsmen warm up for half an hour before training, and practicing with constant short breaks, in order not to damage their body.

Ivan is right about warming up. Fretting hand pain is quite a common occurence, and appears quite a lot in the forum. It can be several things that contribute to pain:

- Pressing too hard, when we concentrate hard this can happen.
- Playing the same shapes for too long overworks the same muscles,tendons & ligaments meaning they never get any time to rest and rebuild
- Posture... the way you sit means tension from your neck and shoulders can refer itself down to your hands. Try stretching your neck, shoulders and whole upper body. It's all linked so tension in one place can and will lead to problems in another place.

Also, other activites can contribute to a tired and overworked wrist. A lot of computer work can cause problems.. just try and make sure that you have good circulation around your hands and arms before doing any activity that is heavy on the hands. When there is minimal blood flow (cold hands) then the tendons and muscles are more likely to get hurt because they can't conract and expand efficiently.

Just try and keep all these things in mind and soon you will will instinctively know how to listen to your body.. you'll know when your hands are feeling tired because they're too cold etc.. you'll soon start to know when you're overworking them so you'll be abe to hopefully avoid this problem. smile.gif

I've been diagnosed with tendinitis ...so I guess I will take a break from practicing.In the meantime I will learn some theory.
