My band was going to record our first song, but we don't have good recording equipment. We'll probably record this song very crappily, but for future songs what kind of recording equpiment should I use? (Try to keep it cheap, I don't make much money)

Hi Hayamo,

There are a lot of different ways to go, and a lot of money to be spent, and generally the more you spend the better it will be. Fot the cheapest option you could try a regular tape deck with a couple of midcrophones, or a stereo digital recorder, then you get into more expensive options such as hard disk studios, and laptops running recording software. In addition you will need a number of microphones depending on how good a job you want to do.

Best thing to do is figure out what you can afford, and go from there. Give us a price range and we'll try and advise!

Ok, you could start with something like this if you want to record as a band:

It has built in mics, but you can use better external mics when you can afford it, and it has a USB connection so you can connect it to a PC to burn CDs etc - would make a great start in that price range.

Or, if you want to do it as a studio kind of project recording each track singly, you could get something like this:

This should allow you to put together a pretty reasonable demo, again you'd need a mic, but only one, for the vocal.

The next level up is some kind of multitrack recording, using a PC, a specialised interface and some software like cubase - that is a little more pricey but will give correspondingly better results.
