Hi mate, I just saw your video! We have to work on your lead guitar but also on your rhythm. Let's add this lesson to the Warming up and endurance exercises.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/A_Metalheads_Journey_Lesson_1/

The idea is that you work on this lesson and record a video using the backing track that you can download there. Please also record yourself playing the warming up exercises after some days of practice.

Hey Gab,
I started to do the the exercises, but my guitar wont sustaine long trills, or even the triple pull off. What do I do ????

What gear are you using? You can get more sustain adding more drive or adding a compressor to your signal.

Check out this cool tutorial about it:

Posted by: Yash Apr 8 2012, 01:03 PM

I cant do even one of the trilling examples

Are you talking about the "Warming up & Endurance" exercises?

Posted by: Yash Apr 9 2012, 11:30 AM

Yeah, I suck at longer hammer ons and pull offs, I cant sustain the sound long enough, even with a lot of gain and compressor
I use a Digitech RP-55 fx pedal, a Givson GS 1000 guitar, and some cheap crappy chinese amp that sucks
Can I blame my gear for my inability ??? happy.gif rolleyes.gif

hahah hi mate! I don't think that the gear is the only responsible! Let's train those fingers a bit more!
What about working on this one?

Posted by: Yash Apr 10 2012, 01:48 PM

Ok, this might start it, i am able to do simpler stuff, but longer trills are tough

Great! Practice this ons for some days and let me know if you find an improvement.

Posted by: Yash May 2 2012, 04:54 PM

Hey Gabriel, I am back now....
I practiced and I found out a problem, my little finger is too weak......
And with you, I wanna just focus on lead guitar and music theory, coz I am learning rhythm and timing with Cosmin
So, lets start...
Oh and one more thing, what about the symohony of destruction solo, will you transcribe it for me, please, and more importantly,
WILL I ABLE TO PLAY IT ???
I want to, coz Megadeth and Dave Mustaine is my favorite... you'll teach me wont you ???? smile.gif
I'll be able to give one hour of practice for your work every day(most probably)

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 2 2012, 05:23 PM

Hi Yash! Welcome back! smile.gif

We can go for that song but I think that after some other works since it's not an easy solo. That song's solo is played by Marty Friedman not by Mustaine. Both have different styles of soloing so maybe you also like Marty's style. I would like that we choose a solo lesson from our archive. We should start with something at level 3/4. Do you have any ideas?

Posted by: Yash May 3 2012, 12:44 PM

No, I am not talkin about the song's main solo by Marty, the next solo, the one played by Dave in the Demo version and the Rude Awakening version, listen to it and you'll know what I mean, starts just after Marty's/Pitrelli's solo....

And lets start working on my lead guitar skills. My guitar has 21 frets so i might not be able to play every thing... but I'll try. I'll start with any thing you say. I wanna be a shredder like Dave and Marty and Chris and Randy Rhoads and Alexi Laiho one day.... biggrin.gif

By the way, I also found out one of my problems is that it takes me lot of time to learn what notes are in a certain solo, for example, It took me 3 days to learn the notes in countdown to extinction solo (hope you've heard that song), and its a damn easy solo, difficulty level 1 in my opinion, but I always tend to just miss a note here and there..... What do I do ??? mellow.gif

Ok, so let's start with something easier. What about Lian Gerbino's metal lessons for level 2? Check his lessons here:

Posted by: Yash May 6 2012, 05:33 PM

But the first is too fast.... what do you suggest.... and what's a legato slide ????? wacko.gif blink.gif

Hi mate! That Megadeth's solo has lots of legatos and trills. We have to work on this technique as well as many others. It's important to be patient if you want to achieve that level. It takes many hours of practice and you can't jump steps.

Have you worked on the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginners-Corner-22-Hammer-On/ lesson? Could you please film yourself playing it?

OK, I'll try, but do I have to stay in those scales only or can I move around a bit and do some chromatic stuff ????
BTW, check these two out, I composed the F-solo, and the other one is a classical piece I learnt on piano 4 years back, can you tell me what is it called ??? smile.gif

Hi mate! You have to be patient and keep on practicing that part isolated for some more days. Maybe you could film yourself and post a video playing the part and I can give you more specific feedback. smile.gif

I'll be back regarding the GP files! Guitar pro audio isn't working on my computer. blink.gif

That sounds great mate! But you have to administrate correctly that amount of time. Playing 6 hours per day is a lot and if you do it in the right way you will notice a big improvement. That lesson by Trond is fantastic but maybe it's a bit difficult to start. We should start creating a good routine that includes exercises covering all the techniques, musical lessons or covers and some theory about scales & chords.

This would be a good plan:

Techniques:
Alternate Picking, Bending, Vibrato, Legato & Sweep Picking.

Musical examples:
We have to select lessons like the one from Trond to work on to see your progress. You should upload takes to REC

Theory:
You have to learn the theory and application of triads, arpeggios, scales and chords. The tonalities and then the modes.

Hey, thanks for that mate. I know I need to manage my time very well, and I'll be starting a new thread for that on Saturday probably.

And I'll be doing a lot of work here.

I am doing Lead Guitar with you. I really love your Marty Mustaine style lesson. You would make me play that, won't you wink.gif smile.gif

Theory with Alex.

Riffing and rhythm guitar with Cosmin.

And I'll be also joining Ben's Bushido.

All I'll be doing this June would be taking my guitar playing to a new level thanks to you guys. I've got no school. College won't start until late July or August. I need to kick up a notch.

You don't have to stop your creativity. Don't worry about it! That workout by Steve Vai is fantastic. I have used is as a guide since the first time I discovered it. You can use the categories as the guidelines and GMC lessons as the exercises to work on. What do you think? Are you doing it?

Posted by: Yash Jun 2 2012, 04:32 PM

OK, good idea.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 2 2012, 10:57 PM

These are the categories:

1. Exercises
2. Scales
3. Chords
4. Ear training
5. Sight-reading
6. Composing/songwriting
7. Music theories
8. Jamming
9. Rest

Let's choose some GMC lessons. For exercises you can also use the lesson notes from my Vchat sessions. Ivan's Arpeggios and Scale workouts are really good for the Scale categories. (Check his lessons http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/instructor/Ivan-Milenkovic/) Regarding the chords category, Steve talks about some book that includes lots of chords and suggests to learn at least one new chord per day. I don't know exactly which chords you know and which ones you don't know. This category also includes strumming and rhythm so you should select some musical lessons here in the style that you prefer.
Regarding theory you don't have to miss our Theory Board: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showforum=10.

About the composition category... I would like to help and guide you with this. We should start with short ideas and also analyzing your favourite bands stuff. You should also join all the collaborations that you can here at GMC. It's very important to practice your composing abilities and also to receive the instructor's feedback. You can also use the backing tracks for the jamming time.

Hi Yash, good take! You are starting to get a better sound of each note when you are playing legato. However your timing is not precise, you have to concentrate on playing tighter. Maybe using the slower backings could help you be more comfortable and play tighter.
I can't see where you are positioning your left hand thumb when you are playing this but be sure to put it centered compared to the other 4 fingers... something like this:

Let's add this warming up and endurance exercises to your diary practice:

OK, these are great, but the Frusciante thing isnt my style, so maybe we can change it, but if you think its important, I'll work on it too.

And all the collabs have just ended laugh.gif
I'll join your next one.

Chords I know -

- Power Chords (duh)
- Barre Chords - E Major/Minor Shape, A Major/Minor Shape
- Open Chords - A Major/Minor, C Major, D Major/Minor, E Major/Minor, G Major

Scales I know

yes, we can change it. The idea is to have a melodic solo lesson that uses phrasing, bending and vibrato. Something like this:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Phrase-Book/

Do you have any other suggestion?

Phrase Book is awesome. I'll start working on it today. smile.gif biggrin.gif

Problem Spotted - I am unable to use my pinky effectively on the lower strings (E & A mostly).
How do I overcome it.
The notes don't ring out well.

In which type of licks does this problem appear? using legato or also with alternate picking?

More in Alternate picking. I am descent with the pinky in legato.

Hey bro, I wanted to share something with you.

I really like power metal, especially music with keyboards and orchestration. But how do I discover and dig more into this stuff ?

This has really been a problem for me. I want to discover more styles of music, but I don't know where to start. I really like Children of Bodom, and loved your Power metal lessons. So, suggest me some songs for going deeper into power metal (with or without Symphony),especially ballads. smile.gif

Oh My God, dude, I just found out from one of your lessons, your brother is the bass player in your band. He is a great player too. biggrin.gif
smile.gif Awesome biggrin.gif
Don't know if he 's older or you, so I think I'll just shoot my query.

I wanna get my brother to play bass too. He is 15 now. But he's falling into pop music a lot now a days. He used to worship Cliff Burton (of Metallica) and David Ellefson (of Megadeth) but he just seems to have quit, he is starting to hate metal (almost completely hates metal now, but still like the ballads).

So, how do I inspire him to play bass and get more metal ? Maybe I could learn from you and your brother's story.

From what I know, he'll like stuff that's ballady, slow, and with symphony and orchestration.

Hi Yash! Nice post. smile.gif

Well, regarding power metal, I have been a big fan so I know lots of bands. At first I would start by the first bands that have been considered Power Metal. You should check this ones:

Helloween

Blind Guardian

Gamma Ray

Heaven's Gate

Rage

Grave Digger

Then appeared some other that I really like:

Angra

Stratovarius

Rhapsody

Hammerfall

Sonata Arctica

Edguy

Avantasia

Regarding my brother's experience, it has been very natural. Our uncle was a big fan of rock, metal and power metal. He always shared lots of fantastic music with us and we always enjoyed it together. You can't do anything to convince people to like something that they don't like, but if your brother see you passionate and motivated with music and metal maybe he would like to share that feeeling with you.

These are not only ballads but you can explore these band's music and you will find many ballads too.

For example these ones by Helloween:

this one can¡t be considered only ballad because is an epic masterpiece but the chorus is ballad style:

my favourite ballad by Blind Guardian:

by Edguy:

Chords I know -

- Power Chords (duh)
- Barre Chords - E Major/Minor Shape, A Major/Minor Shape
- Open Chords - A Major/Minor, C Major, D Major/Minor, E Major/Minor, G Major

- Minor Pentatonic Scale shape, the most basic one
- Minor Scale On one string, I am working for all 6 strings
- I have learnt major scale quiet a few times, but always forget it, dont know why ?

Let's work on improving this count too. And what about problem with the pinky finger. It mostly occurs in alternate picking.

Hey Gab,

I practiced the ITC-1 Exercies for some time now. I seem to do descent with alll the exercises except ex 3 and ex 6. They are both double pull offs on a single string and then hammer on and repeat. I lose all the sustain with the pull off and don't get enough ringing when I hammer on with the pinky.

Amy tips bro. I'll also film myself doing them today. smile.gif

Posted by: Yash Jun 6 2012, 12:46 PM

Problem No. 2 Spotted -

I was trying to play phrasing book (God, its so emotional). Whenever I move from G string to E string in the beginning part, I somehow keep the G string ringing which creates unwanted noise. What do I do ? sad.gif

Well, let's start working on the Pentatonic minor scale. You will notice that this scale is used in blues but it is also used for shredding. Maybe you will say, I'm not a bluesy guy, I don't want to learn blues licks, but be sure that blues is an influence for many of your favourite guitar players. Let's learn the 5 shapes of this scale.

It would be good if you check this lesson to learn the scales and relate them with the caged format.

Regarding the pinky problem, what exactly happening?

Well, that is the most difficult part of playing legato. Making the notes ring without picking is tricky and it can be achieved with enough strength. How to get it? Practicing as many exercises as you can. This lesson has another cool exercises to train this:

Well, you can mute that string with the palm of your right hand or with the finger one of your right hand. I do it in both ways, depending the lick.

Hi mate! This is the lesson that I was talking about:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/pentatonic-workshop-level1-caged-format-timing-exercises/

There you will find the caged format explained. You can also read this great tutorials by Andrew Cockburn about the Caged:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=2984

Regarding the pentatonic shape, it was my fault, this is the correct shape, but you have to add the fret number 13 in the 2nd string because the scale generator doesn't allow me to write it.

Hi Yash! I'm so glad of finding this new videos at the thread! Well done mate! You are always working hard and motivated. It's a pleasure to have you as a part of this army. The first lesson starts really well but then, starting at 00:38 you lose the rhythm and play the notes with a different timing. Do you note it? I think that you should practice this one at a slower tempo a bit more time. The second one is better, you keep the timing well during the whole lesson but you still need to play this one even tighter. In both lessons I note that your hands aren't relaxed when you are playing, it would be good if you can try it.

No, I am not always working hard and motivated to tell you the truth tongue.gif Really, I was having problems this week.... Internet problems (still going on, I can't load any Youtube vids ).... electricity problems (thank god nothing happened today or else this one would have been cancelled too mad.gif ) And the biggest of them all.... I was playing video game too much that I didn't pick up for one or two days sad.gif mad.gif

And I noticed that too.... In the first one, I just don't know, something happened, I forgot the note progression, and it went wrong that way.
I noticed it while watching.

In the second one, I think my left hand is still pretty weak, and gets tired easily. I am doing my best to build up. smile.gif

And about the hands being relaxed, they automatically get stiff after some time, don't exactly know the reason huh.gif

Oh, one more thing, did you learn to pronounce my name biggrin.gif

By the way, this depends on what things really motivate you. In my case, listening to music that I can't play yet gives me more motivation to keep on practicing. However I know that this could have the contrary effect in some people.

hahaha yeah mate, there are guitars that are made for shredding. Ibanez guitars are one example, their necks are very thin and that makes it easier. But it's not magic, just makes it easier, we still need to do a lot of hard work. Jackson Guitars also have thin necks.

6 strings vs 12 strings??

mmm both are cool, but If I would have to choose one for starting, I would go for the 6th strings one because you can use it for everything. The 12 strings is more special, I think that it doesn't work for everything.

OK Gabriel, here's the MP3 version of the solo and after that some rhythm being played smile.gif That is where I need to put the sweeps in smile.gif

Plus I would like to do some scale runs combining alternate picking and legato smile.gif We can extend the time I get to solo if you like smile.gif

 in_my_darkest_hour_solo___empty_space_for_solo.mp3 ( 1.15MB ) : 68

Let's see what we can do smile.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 1 2012, 01:40 AM

Well, the progression in this section is (Am - C - Dm - F C), so these are the arpeggios that you can play with sweep picking. Check again the lesson notes from my last Vchat session and use those shapes. Keep me updated with the progress. Please post mp3 files to check the solo progress. wink.gif

You have to play major arpeggios if the chords are major. To learn how to do this, you have to start studying music theory and harmony, as well as you have to train your ear. You can use some GMC stuff and also some theory books.

OK. I'll go through the thread and do all the lessons again fast. I guess my rhythm guitar skills have improved, but lead guitar is taking slow to get to what I want to sound like.

I am currently working on songs, mostly Bullet For My Valentine. But a few other's thrown in.
- Tears Don't Fall - Rhythm parts 90% done, need to learn the main 2 solos
- Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow - I suck at playing it well, but, I just play and jam along. Interestingly, I can play its solo to an extent
- Avenged Sevenfold - I Won't See You Tonight Part 1 - I need to learn the solo. I have the guitar pro, but, I need to focus on getting the vibratos, bends and the note sequences right on. So, this would probably be a good point to start
- Nothing Else Matters - I've learnt the solo and I guess I can play it. But not too confident because I screw up sometimes. I also need to learn James Hetfield's parts that he plays live and sing along with it
- 4 Words To Choke Upon - I can play the intro to the song well, the rhythms (Matt Tuck, their vocalist) are not too tough either, just need to get the solo under my fingers.

And that is probably it for the time being. I still work on Symphony of Destruction and Countdown to Extinction sometimes, and also In My Darkest Hour, but these 3 songs have taken the back seat because I can't figure out Dave Mustaine's solo in Symphony's demo version, I can play Countdown to Extinction with almost 100% accuracy, and In My Darkest Hour is tough and a bit fast for me at the time.

So, let's GO !! Thanks Gab. biggrin.gif

So, what do I need to do now ? Metronome ?

Beautiful heavy metal song! If you love metal, this video is a great inspiration. I've just waken up and this is the first song I hear, thanks friend. smile.gif

Regarding your guitar practice. Here we go with two questions:

How many hours a day can you practice?
How are you planning to learn those songs? By ear? Youtube video or have the sheet music?

hey Gab. And, you're welcome. I am in love with this song. The solos are so amazing, the vocals. The heavy riff. The clean riff. It's just one of those perfect heavy metal songs.

Regarding answers to your questions

I can practice at least 2 hours a day. Maybe more
I am learning these songs using guitar pro mostly. So, sheet music. I use my ear sometimes. But, that's super rare. Only if my ear easily catches it and my fingers play it. tongue.gif

Edit - Motivational song of the day

Second Heartbeat by Avenged Sevenfold

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 25 2014, 03:14 PM

Hi Yash! Great song! I didn't know this screamo side of Avenged Sevenfold, it's very powerful! I like it.

I have been thinking on you, and I think that th best would be to organize your diary practice.

You have two hours or practice, so my suggestion for this next days (until you learn the whole Megadeth song) is:

HOUR 1:

Warming up (7 minutes): http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Arpeggios/

Bending (20 minutes) : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginners-Corner-21-String-Bending/

Vibrato (20 minutes): http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Vibrato-Odyssey-5/

Alternate Picking (20 minutes): http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Alternate-Picking-Workout-1/

HOUR 2:

- Working on "A Tout Le Monde"

+ Learn the clean intro
+ Learn the distorted guitar (verse, chorus, second verse)
+ Learn the clean arpeggio played in the chorus by Marty.
+ Learn the outro Maiden style melody.
+ Start working on the solo. Divide it in parts and work on each.

What do you think?

and this is my inspiring stuff of the day: biggrin.gif

Posted by: Yash Jun 26 2014, 12:35 AM

OK Gab. I'll get to work. And, as I showed you in the video, I was playing Maiden's Dance of Death all day. Trying to do vocals and guitar. I also learned Seek And Destroy. smile.gif I'll work on A Tout Le Monde starting tomorrow. Hopefully do a vocal/guitar cover one day biggrin.gif

Excellent Yash! As we discussed at the chat room, you have to focus on this things:

- Bending: This technique must be your priority since you don't reach the correct pitch when you bend the notes. Remember to keep on playing the exercise that I shared at the chat room (Satriani's)

- Legato: Work on the sound of your pull offs to make your legato sound consistent. Here you have a special lesson for it:http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/pull-offs-lesson/

- Muting unwanted noises: It's very important to use the tips that I gave you to mute the strings that you are not playing. This must be applied to everything you play. You will have to practice slower at first to be used to this tricks.

- Singing in pitch: I noticed that you have a cool voice but you have pitch issues while you thing. Practice singing over the original songs and emulate the notes sang by the singer. We have excellent singing lessons for guitarists at this http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/video-lessons/singing-for-guitarists/.

Hi Yash! nice video! As I commented during our chat, you have to focus on the pitch of your singing. You have a nice voice and I think that this could sound much better with more precise tuning. You need to train your voice and your ears for this.

The first important question is, do you note the pitch issues?

but what happens when you listen to the video that you shared? Can you note the parts that need pitch adjustment?

Posted by: Yash Jun 30 2014, 01:12 AM

Let me listen to it and get back to you.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jun 30 2014, 02:09 PM

Please do it and tell me what you hear!

A good exercise to train your voice and ear would be to practice what singers call "vocalizations" over a scale. The idea is the following:

- Check out the tonality of the song you want to play and the scale that works with it. In this case "Dance or Death" is in E minor.

- Play the scale slowly up and down paying attention to the sound of each note.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

- Play each note followed by you singing the note with any vocal. Be sure to sing the notes in pitch.

- Play the whole scale singing along the notes.

- Sing the scale without playing guitar. Record yourself doing it. Listen to it, and play the notes with your guitar to compare the pitch.

- Sing the scale over the song's backing.

- Do this workout 20 minutes every day.

Is it clear? Trust me, that your tuning while you sing will become a lot better.

Posted by: Yash Jun 30 2014, 09:03 PM

I can't hit the right pitch. sad.gif Let alone singing the whole scale. I don't know what to do.

Hi Yash, this is something that needs practice. You have to start slowly, just with one note. Play the note, and try to sing it, get back to the guitar note, sing it again... this requires many repetitions if you are not getting the correct pitch.

Be patient mate, don't be dramatic. As everything related to music, it needs time and practice. wink.gif

I was thinking that you could give a try to this list of lessons:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/instructor/Luciana-Segovia/

There you will find warming ups, and many other exercises to improve your singing abilities.

Hi Yash! Great to know that you are back! This is my method to buy something when I don't have experience with it. The first thing I do is to define my budget to know what's my range. Then, I start searching at an online store or something like "ebay" but from my country. There I check all the models that I can afford. I see which are the most sold ones, which are usually the ones that offer the best "price-quality" deal. Once I have around 3 or 4 possible ones. I check if there is one that I don't like how it looks and eliminate it. Once I have the 3 possible, I send the links to some experienced friends who can help me and I read some reviews online. The final step, if it's possible, I go to the music store and try them to see which one feels better for me.

This is process works for me every time I need something that I've never bought before. I can follow this steps with you if you need it.

So the steps are:

Budget
Most sold in my range
Eliminate the bad looking ones
Check for reviews and friend's opinions
Try it at the store
Buy it

What about your singing practice? Have you checked the lesson that I suggested? It would be very important to keep a diary practice of your singing. Then, I tried a few Les Pauls, Epiphone LP Standard, and a Gibson Future Les Paul, or whatever it was. And, also the PRS Tremonti SE. And, a 7-string PRS Custom 24 SE, and a Fender Strat. I might have missed out a few more. Finally found a few good guitar shops in Delhi, with my childhood friends smile.gif smile.gif)))) Though they're not into metal or guitar at all, they were really encouraging.
Now, about the playing experience. I played MUCH MUCH MUCH better on those guitars, than my current guitar. The speed, better precision. Hitting notes was easier. On each and every darned guitar. It felt amazing. Boosted my confidence a lot. I felt, with the right amount of correct practice, your help, I can be a pro in 4 years =) Thanks so much for supporting me the whole time big brother biggrin.gif I loved most of them. Jacksons were my favorite, because of the neck, and, a little more mid-ness in tone. The Jackson Kelly had amazing tone because of the Duncan pickups. I guess the best combination of woods and pickups. Though the fingerboard would be ebony on the Jackson I buy, the one I tried today had Rosewood. Then, on second position, Les Paul. Great Tone =) Classic. Loved it. Wish the neck could be a bit thinner. But, I could still play on it fine. I liked the PRS Tremonti too. Though would have loved to spend more time with it. And, I wasn't a fan of the 7 String PRS. Lacked the bottom end. Maybe the amp's fault. It felt great today. Felt better about my playing when they said that I was good. And, after I could play just fine even after not touching a guitar for a month biggrin.gif

Hi Yash! This is an amazing experience! There are a lot of mixed feelings and things happening on this story and everything is positive. This is what music is all about: Passion and enjoyment. Music doesn't have to be an obligation, a suffering, it lacks sense if it converts in that way.
Do you remember the 3 words that I said in our chat? Passion, Discipline & Dedication. Always keep them in mind. smile.gif

Choosing YOUR instrument, the one that feels great on your hands is the best thing that you can do to start this new part of the journey. You will use it to express your feelings, it must be like an extension of your body. I must be comfortable and good looking for you, it must have good quality, good tone, you have to feel that it was build specially for you. Your diary practice can become a big pleasure if you find the right instrument for you. If you liked Jackson guitar, go for it! If you want a Gibson with a thinner neck, check PRS single cut, or LTD EC. There are lots of possibilities out there. Dedicate your time to choose the best one for you.

Sometimes, when our mind isn't clear, when there are many things worrying us, we need a stop, we need to let our mind think and do some conclusions, to process all the information that we received. That's why, sometimes a break in practice can be more effective than obsessive practice. Remember that doing music is a way to express our feelings, to say something, so we need things to say, if your mind is blocked, we won't be able to express fluently, if you are not living new experiences, you won't have anything new to say. If you haven't done it, please check this beautiful video:

As I said previously, it's possible to do a music career, it's possible to live making music, but the main goal should do that one "making music". Being successful doesn't mean to be loved by million of fans, being successful mean doing what you love every day and being surrounded by people that you love and that loves you.

Another suggestion that I would like to give you is "be yourself". It's cool to say "I want to be the next James Hetfield", but it's cooler to say "I'm going to be YASH". If you want to be special, if you want to hear people saying in the future "I want to be the next Yash". Work to find your own personality in music and life, create your unique style. Search for those things that make you unique, special, and enhance them... this is the journey that I propose you to do.

Hi Gab smile.gif Thanks smile.gif That motivated me MUCH more smile.gif smile.gif I am going to be Yash, student of guitar legends Gabriel Leopardi and Cosmin Lupu biggrin.gif smile.gif And, music to me is about writing songs about my personal experiences, it's my way of letting out stuff that's been inside of me for all my life because I am pretty introverted and I don't talk to people. I write lyrics smile.gif And, I love writing lyrics. About girls, betrayals, getting bullied, etc etc. But, I think my influences might be too strong on me sad.gif My lyrics sound like something Bullet For My Valentine would right. My music, I don't even know. I don't compose much music sadly. Because I didn't use to give much time to guitar as I wanted to sad.gif But, I will now smile.gif Things are better. Life seems much better now and I am happy after a long time. smile.gif

Now, about the gear. Here goes.

I have decided to take the risk and order that guitar. Pay first then get it. I don't know. I think it will work for sure. It's a Jackson King V Pro. I'll have money left after that. Which I'll use to buy an Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul Custom Plus with Gibson pickups smile.gif Though I'll have to save a little bit of money from my own money to get that baby.
The reason I chose this combination is - Variety is the essence of life tongue.gif biggrin.gif
The Jackson is V-shaped, super sharp, alder body, maple neck, ebony fingerboard, Floyd Rose, EMG actives (81 and 89, which gives me a single coil and humbucker in the neck and a bridge humbucker)
The Epi Les Paul is Single cut, has 24 frets (the main reason I chose this LP instead of anything else), Mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, and a locking tone-pros kind of bridge with nice tuners and Gibson USA pickups which are passive.
The two guitars are opposites and will probably complement well and you know, I'll have variety. And, I think the necks will be kinda similar to play, because, the Jackson has a compound 12-16'' radius, and the LP has a sweet 14" radius. So, I am hoping I won't be having much troubles switching between them. It'll just be a matter of tonal choice and the tremolo usage smile.gif Right ? What do you say about my decision ? smile.gif
Wise or not ? smile.gif

I was also considering the PRS Mikael Akerfeldt model as well, instead of the Epiphone. But, the neck radius threw me off tongue.gif It's 10''. And, given my tiny hands, I'd be better off with over 12" if I want to shred, right ? Help me with this one please mate smile.gif But, since I currently play on a thick one, I don't think I'll have many problems ? I don't know. I was considering the Akerfeldt model because Opeth goes from Jazz to Death Metal tongue.gif Maybe that guitar does too ?

Oh, by the way, if I end up buying both of them (a single cut and a Jackson) I'll have to save up from my own money to buy the acoustic and the 12 string smile.gif What do you say about all this ? smile.gif

Hi Gab smile.gif Thanks a lot for the feedback, it totally made my day biggrin.gif I did a few mistakes here and there though sad.gif In the solo I guess sad.gif And, in the vocals too sad.gif But, if say it's nice, I'll take it biggrin.gif Thanks a lot Gab.

Now, what about the guitars ? And, what would be my practice regime ? I tried to do John Petrucci's rock discipline. His warmups are so tough, I don't know what will he do as time goes on laugh.gif I'll be working on songs and riffs the moment I can. smile.gif I write lyrics whenever a catchy line comes to my head. But, I don't know how original I am sad.gif As for the riffs, I wanna develop my playing more. Not confident enough to write killer riffs. All I can do right now are octaves, power chords, and palm mutes. sad.gif Let's get to developing my hands biggrin.gif

I tried John Petrucci's rock discipline, and he intimidated me laugh.gif If the warm ups are so tough, lord knows what's he gonna do later in the video laugh.gif I have a guitar world's play lead guitar DVD, maybe start with that ? I really feel my soloing lacks too much sad.gif Oh, and by the way, next cover will be - a classic wink.gif I'll keep it a surprise. Though I've been learning to play it since I've begun to play guitar, never been able to do the lead parts perfectly. I lack the speed and stamina. sad.gif

Hey Yash! Thanks for the feedback! You don't really need that video clinic having GMC lessons! I can help you to design weekly routines that cover the different techniques that you want to cover in a musical context. That's very important! I think that these are the topics that we should work during the first weeks:

Warming Up

Alternate Picking

Legato

Expression

Rhythm

I can assign GMC lesson for each of these topics if you want, but you can also suggest some that you like that fit on them. What do you say?

About composing, don't worry about your current technique, it's enough to start writing some stuff. Then you can make it more complex, by now you can work on easier riffs, vocal melodies, chord progressions and off course lyrics. Write from your heart, don't worry about how "original" your songs are. Our first compositions are usually very influenced by our heroes but they are a first step to slowly discover our own voice. Let it be.

Sure thing Gab. Bring it all on ! I wanna work on my lead playing more than anything. I can't solo at all ohmy.gif After 3 years of playing sad.gif And, OK. I'll work and creat what I can create. I get vocal melodies with the lyrics in my head. I write them down, and oddly, I remember the vocal line. Mostly. laugh.gif I posted 2 threads about guitars in the gear section. Great! I'm glad to know that you enjoyed the session. I think that the whole course could be VERY useful for you so I would like to invite you to start working on the different weeks here. Starting with the week number one that is based on the caged system, major scales, diatonic sequences and major arpeggios. This workout should take 30 minutes of practice every day but it will have a big impact in your guitar playing and the connection between your mind and guitar.

Just let me know if you want to start and we will give it a try!

I want to do that to ! biggrin.gif There's so much to do that I feel lost. But, until the time I can't get my guitar, I'll focus more on my vocals and acoustic stuff with Cosmin smile.gif We're training my voice and my ears right now. smile.gif Once I get my new guitar, lead guitar and riffs here we come. And, I wanted to let you know that I might be playing at the college fest in November smile.gif Symphony of Destruction and Countdown to Extinction, if I get a band together that is.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 30 2014, 02:28 PM

Hi Yash! That's ok for me, let's wait for the new electric guitar and by now keep on training your voice and ear that are very important. I think that having a well trained ear is fundamental for every musician. If you can hear correctly the notes, your can't connect your guitar with your mind so you won't be able to play what you want.

Playing those songs like can be so awesome!! Do you already know the guitar parts? Do you have to play the solos too?

Posted by: Yash Sep 30 2014, 06:47 PM

I just always think that I am late at everything dry.gif I am 20 and NOW I start training my ear. I already know those guitar parts. On Countdown, I play the solo (I did it in the video, I can do it) On Symphony, don't know yet. If the other guitarist (which I haven't found yet) can't play the solo, then I'll have to. I learnt the beginning, the slow part. Shredding those fast licks is tough.

Awesome! It must have been a great experience. If you think they are good guys and you like the ban visit them more frequently. Maybe you can offer them being their guitar assistant, some king of road stage. You can help them before and during the show, tuning guitars and setting everything. This will give you more experience, it will help you to make more music contacts and maybe, it can then become a job. That's great!! Congratulations mate!! Let's start with a first simple task. Film yourself playing the new guitar, some random playing and also some lessons that you have been practicing. Let me connect with your current progress and your new guitar to start designing together the new routine for the next days, what do you think?

Posted by: Yash Nov 18 2014, 06:13 PM

Here's what it sounds like. Yes, I need to improve my playing a lot. But hey, that's what I am here for ! wink.gif A lead guitar video is coming up soon wink.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 18 2014, 07:50 PM

hehehe I love the energy of this video, starting by that shout at the beginning! As we suspected, the new guitar is bringing some renewed inspiration and motivation! I'm really happy for you mate!

This is a very cool medley with classic Thrash Metal songs. (I think that there is also some Zeppelin close to the end...). You learnt each of the riffs and songs very well and now it's time to adjust your technique mostly when you have to play the faster riffs. In order words, your next step would be to polish the riffs to be able to play this songs live with a real band, or maybe record some Youtube covers?

A good plan would be to take 1 riff each day and work on it. You could start with the verse riff for Creeping death. That one played with E powerchord followed by a fast legato. The process should be the following:

- Listen carefully to the original song. Check also some live versions and maybe any video of Kirk or anyone else showing the riff?
- Try to emulate both the right and left hand movements.
- Check the rhythm, be sure that you are doing it right.
- Practice using a drum loop or metronome at slow tempo.
- Increase the speed until you notice that you cannot keep timing and precision.

Thanks Gabi ! smile.gif I'll work on Creeping Death riff starting tomorrow. But, I wanted to do In My Darkest Hour first, all of it, including the lead guitar parts. I'll do a rough cover of In My Darkest hour and get a video of me trying to do some silly leads up soon smile.gif I need to learn many more songs and focus more on my lead guitar playing. A LOT. I suck at solos. Not consistent enough.
PS - I wasn't warmed up before I played. I didn't have much time today. sad.gif

Here's my lead playing. I suck ! Big time. This is what I wanna do. I need to be a good lead guitarist. And develop my own thing.

Hi mate, the video is private, I cannot see it.

If you want to polish your technique (both rhythm and lead guitar need work), you will need to work on details. This means that instead of working on more songs, you have to isolate the tricky sections as I suggested and work on them as a loop, putting all your attention in the movements, the notes and everything that is happening to make it sound good. The same that I suggested for rhythm is applicable to lead guitar. You need to practice at least 15 / 30 minutes but every day to notice results. And if you time is that short, you need to be very focused and have a very well designed routine that covers technique like:

Rhythm

Alternate Picking

Legato

Vibrato & Bending

You can create your own exercises based on the parts of the songs that you need to work, and variations on it.

Please be patient friend and work on this way. Random playing is not the way to go to reach your guitar goals, and even less if your time for practice is short.

Hi mate! Now I could see the video! You have learnt all the notes perfectly. I notice that you have problems with vibrato, bending, sweep picking and alternate picking. We will work on each of these techniques using some GMC lessons. The idea is that you work on these lessons this week and shared videos with me. You can work on 1 part of each lesson each day and the 7th day combine everything. These are my suggestions based on your weak points and musical taste.

Rhythm: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Megadeth-Made-Easy/

Alternate Picking: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Alternate-Picking-Workout-2/

Sweep Picking: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/sweep-picking-lesson/

Vibrato & Bending: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Winter-Tune/

I'll expect videos from you playing what you've learnt of these lessons in 7 days? Do we have a deal?
