GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ New Dragonforce Video/song

Posted by: shellshock1911 Jul 12 2008, 06:03 PM

I know a lot of people don't like Dragonforce, but I thought I should share the new song and video "Heroes of Our Time," that will be released on their new album in August, but I just watched it. I have to say I am really impressed. The first third of the song or so sounds like their typical stuff I know, but it gets much better and the song is not Dragonforce's normal song arrangement. Solo is in insane!! Those sweeps at 2:16-2:20 and 3:02-3:04 OMG they are so fast, I didn't even know it was possible to play that fast.

I have to say I think that song is insane and so is the solo's hopefully they can actually play these live!

Posted by: chmilew Jul 12 2008, 06:27 PM

That's insane biggrin.gif

Posted by: VinceG Jul 12 2008, 06:33 PM

Typical Dragonforce. That song actually sounds forced now... maybe its just me. Its not a bad song or anything, just boring.

Posted by: jacmoe Jul 12 2008, 06:37 PM

Insane, but not my cup of tea.. smile.gif

The only thing I really dig about Dragonforce is Herman Li's Ibanez! wub.gif

Posted by: Trond Vold Jul 12 2008, 06:50 PM

I like Dragonforce.. but sometimes i have problems differentiating between their songs.. and this is one of them sad.gif

Posted by: Déjà vu Jul 12 2008, 07:18 PM

I've seen a few videos lately, and Herman seemed less sloppy in them smile.gif . Maybe he's heard everyone's comments on youtube and decided to "clean up his act" a little. wink.gif

Yes! That was my exact thought when I first heard Dragonforce.

Posted by: Moon Boots Jul 12 2008, 08:20 PM

They have to drop about 20bpm off their old stuff to even attempt to play it live, so I can guarantee that this will sound appaling laugh.gif

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Jul 12 2008, 08:40 PM

I'm not a fan but I enjoyed watching the video smile.gif

Posted by: Capt.Z Jul 12 2008, 08:58 PM

Kinda reminds me of EVERY Dragonforce song I've ever heard ... dry.gif

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jul 12 2008, 09:23 PM

Isn't that song a little slow?

Posted by: shellshock1911 Jul 12 2008, 10:44 PM

Of course the intro and the solo sounded like typical Dragonforce, but I thought the 2nd and 3rd verse and outro were really cool and different for Dragonforce to a degree.

Wow I just realized the music video was cut short 3 minutes, I forgot they do that a lot. The album version has the solo at the beginning extended a lot, there is an additional verse and solo between the first solo and piano section that is left out on the video, besides that the main solo is pretty much covered by the video.

Posted by: AIB234 Jul 12 2008, 10:48 PM

The whole song to me is bits of some other songs.

I don't hear much difference between this and anything else.

I used to love Dragonforce... I don't hate them now, they do all of their 1 songs pretty well if you know what I mean.

I like to call it Nickelback syndrome.

Posted by: Duncan Jul 12 2008, 11:48 PM

Sounds like the whole last album, which was utter crap. The album artwork is crap, as is the name. They wont be able to play these songs well live.

Just a huge meh.

I'm with you on that one.

Whats really gay is most or all of there songs are about video games! What's up with that?!?! I love the video games but just the way they make the songs are cheesy(I mean the lyrics) but yeah.

Posted by: ZakkWylde Jul 13 2008, 12:30 AM

Have you ever heard non-cheesy Powermetal?!?

I like it BECAUSE it's like their old stuff and it depresses me when I see people playing so much better than me...

Posted by: shellshock1911 Jul 13 2008, 02:54 AM

Everything Dragonforce is meant to be cheesy. Their is no need to bash the album art, the album title, or the lyrics, because they laugh at it themselves and even joke about how they screw up live, for them, it is just about the enjoyment of the music, and that is how it should be.

AMEN

Enjoyment of the music is one thing but showing off on the album when you can't do it live is another.

That being said, I like that song and the Hot Hand (i think that's what it is called) that Herman Li was using was really cool but I just don't know how it will work live...

Yea, by the way, what does that thing do? I notice he shakes his hand and it makes those whammy bar flutters, is it connected by waves to a pedal or something?

That's the problem with DragonForce, I like them, they are a good band but they don't know how to be original and abuse their speed skills alot, this new video shows something a bit new but it's still not there yet...

Don't get me wrong I think Dragonforces first two albums were great. On Inhuman Rampage though pretty much every song sounded the same and had exactly the same structure. This was twinned with them not being able to play it live. They go around with a "we are amazing and don't need to practise" attitude. If they don't care about creating a good show live then I don't care about them. I don't care about their lyrics, never have. But the new album name and artwork is just beyond embarrassing. Dragonforce are getting stuck behind their gimmicks and are moving further and further away from the good band they once were.

I see where you are coming from, yea a lot of Dragonforce stuff now is a "gimmick" it seems...

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 13 2008, 01:58 PM

Yes alot of there stuff is gimmicky now. I'm with you guys.

Posted by: Tomotoms Jul 13 2008, 03:15 PM

Really looking forward to trying out the Ibanez e-gen, the specs are amazing!
I quite like Dragonforce in small doses but imo this song does sound a lot like their other stuff.

Posted by: stickyfingers Jul 13 2008, 03:34 PM

actually i like those video game sounds - that's at least sth. original.

but those lyrics are utter crap... they should get a singer who has something to say. in a manly pitch. :-/

Posted by: jacmoe Jul 13 2008, 03:41 PM

They always remind me of the Eurovision Song Contest .. laugh.gif

mmm well, I like Dragonforce in Studio, but I don't like that they SPEED UP his solos !!! tongue.gif

Posted by: Canis Jul 14 2008, 01:52 AM

If they just could think of something new.. Like playing more slow songs.
An example: Sonata Arctica's guitarists, former Jani, and now Elias Viljanen.. Both of them could reach amazing speeds if they wanted to, but they had no problem playing slow songs. In fact, I love their slower songs more than the fast ones, because I can feel their emotions <3

I used to really love Dragonforce the first times I heard Through Fire and Flames, but now as I've seen that they only care about speed, and all the millions of 10 year old leet-kiddies that love them (which makes me worried about the next generation guitarists :S ), I can't say that I'm a fan.
I still like some of their songs though, like Trail of Broken Hearts, because it's one of their slower ones.

I really love both Herman's and... That other guy's guitars, though tongue.gif

Posted by: Gus Jul 14 2008, 02:39 AM

I am not a big fan of Dragonforce, but I really need to find a store to try it out Herman´s signature...

Posted by: jacmoe Jul 14 2008, 05:46 PM

Too bad it costs as much as a JEM.. dry.gif
Wouldn't mind having one - not at all! laugh.gif

Posted by: Iluha Jul 14 2008, 06:16 PM

I still think their great solo composers... but other than that... the guitars sound fake, too much effects make it sound like midi, and is actualy easier to play than you think, becuase some of their effect make a sound appear just as you touch the strings.. I think it was an effect that has something to do with midi.

On the song as a whole, sound similar to their other songs, even the solo sometimes resembles to the solo from Through The Fire And The Flames.

Well said indeed. I've learnt and can play up to speed on some of the solo to Through the Fire and Flames and I've only been playing guitar since January of this year.

DragonForce is a fantasy/power metal band with lyrics based on hope. If you read the lyrics, it's all about trying to defeat evil and how you're a hero whose been beaten down but manages to save the day type of thing. It may be an acquired taste, but I really love the lyrics. Sure it's nice to have lyrics like Fade to Black and The Unforgiven II, but it's also kinda cool to listen to "happy metal" lyrics.

Please do biggrin.gif It would be sweet to know how to do the whole pull the guitar up with the string that Herman does. I've had it explained to me a few times but it would still be cool to see.

ohmy.gif This is the first time that I pay attention to this band. They have nice vocal melodies and insane but too long solos. It would be ok for me if the solo would last a half. The most amazing thing is the way they use the tapping. I think that Lian could do a lesson in the style of Dragonforce. smile.gif
Thanks for sharing. wink.gif

Are all their songs as fast like this one? I mean do they compose complete albums
with the same tempo ohmy.gif ?

There has been 1-2 slow songs per album so far. Most of the songs are 170-220 BPM though. smile.gif

Yeh like the guy above I think the highest tempo they've played at is around 220bpm. Through The Fire and The Flames is 200bpm, but the main solo's drop down to 170bpm.

Good new song. But it's a shame they cant play the solo's live haha

Posted by: shellshock1911 Jul 17 2008, 04:55 AM

I am actually glad to see that the music on this album sounds more or less the same than the as the other albums, and the solos are just as ridiculous and not-playable. After all the criticism they have gotten for "all songs sounding the same," having stupid lyrics, and not being able to play the songs live, most bands would have caved in and sold-out, or at least slowed things down and made the solos much more playable. This new album just shows they are in it for the pure enjoyment that the music brings to them, not to a select fanbase, or anyone for that matter; and don't plan on changing to suit others.

And that's what it's all about isn't it? I'm sick and tired of bands that play for the money. Like who starts playing guitar thinking that they want to be the next fallout boy, or faber drive? Everybody wants to learn how to play Metallica first, yet somehow we have all these pop rock bands that only know how to play power chords.

The beginning sounds as though they have just pasted pieces of their old songs into a new although it does seem more original as it goes on.
Whats that gadget on hermans hand though?

Hot Hands wireless guitar effects, you move it around and it changes the pitch and makes effects or something, I don't know for sure, and I don't know where you get one, I haven't seen any on music websites, or ebay.
