I have been playing for awhile but am getting tired of pentatonic riffs so I want to learn something new. I would like to play dark progressive music such as Opeth, Katatonia, Dreamtheater, etc., but I will have to improve technique. Not sure how to build up to that level with limited practice time so I guess I will jump right in with the "In the Style of" lessons along with exercises and go from there. Any recommendations will be appreciated! A little about me...I am a father of 3, an IT Professional at a Fortune 500 company, and I play guitar in my church's praise band weekly, so I get to experience a variety of styles. They actually let me out of my cage once in awhile at church and let me rip a lead on some contemporary rock or blues style music. I even get to play some funk occasionally. Playing weekly in the church band has improved my chord technique quite a bit since I find myself playing a variety of chords and timings and even augmented and diminished chords on occasion, but it is not the style of music that I really enjoy.
