GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Ibanez Or Gibson

So i have deided that i am going to buy a new guitar sometime this year....

I have almost decided that i am going to buy a Gibson or Ibanez since i have never tried to layon any of teese guitars i would like to here from people how have played on them whatthey think and other stuffs that can be usefull when i am at the shop looking for a new guitar

Posted by: Batista Apr 15 2008, 06:18 PM

Gibson no doubt! ^^

Posted by: mattacuk Apr 15 2008, 06:25 PM

Well, they are both awsome! But really they are worlds apart smile.gif It totally depends on what sort of music you wish to play!

Les Pauls suit rock superbly due to there incredible fat tone, see any of Gabriels lessons and you can see why! smile.gif When it comes to super technical playing, i struggled on this kind of guitar due to the fact upper fret access is difficult.

I went for an Ibanez mainly due to the awsome neck, which really suits the kind of player I am. Both brands/styles are great, but again both very different beasts wink.gif

I have a prestige Ibanez and the closest thing to a Gibson Les Paul, an Epiphone Les Paul^^
I could not live without either one of them, both are exellent guitars. The Ibanez has incredible playability, a great tremolo and a very thin neck. A friend of mine would call it a sports-guitar, a solo-lead-shred monster.
The Les Paul is very heavy and it takes more effort to play lead on (like mattacuk said) but it beats any other guitar with it's sound. With the active Emgs it has become a Metal beast but is still able to play Rock and Blues.

Posted by: uberIbanez Apr 15 2008, 06:42 PM

i would definately go with an ibanez! the neck is much better, they play extremely well, and they sound as good maybe even better, not to mention they are way cooler looking than gibsons

Superize it all depends on what your looking for really.

The above posts have made some great comparisons on the two guitars actually, but it might help a bit more to know what style of music you like to play. As was stated these are two different beast. Both great but one may suit your needs more then the other depending on your style.

I like to play Metal and espesially rythm and i really think that the Gibson will suits for that but i would also like to play lead so i would like a guitar that suits both lead and rythm

Real he-men and he-women play Les Pauls, preferably strung with barbed wire.

Ibanez is a great guitar for little children.

Posted by: Darfuria Apr 15 2008, 07:28 PM

The Ibanez is much more of a metal-suited guitar, but honestly, your best bit is to go and try one out and find the tone and feel you're looking for, instead of asking us what we think you should get.

Posted by: audiopaal Apr 15 2008, 08:09 PM

I'd go with a gibson, no doubt smile.gif

Best guitars in the world!

I've got a Les Paul Studio Lite, Chet Atkins SST and a Les Paul Nashville Junior and I love them all..
Great sound, great playability, awesome necks on all of them and they look awesome smile.gif

Ibanez are also great guitars, it's just that I like Gibson much better smile.gif

Gibson is what I would go with. I like my Ibanez and it's fun to play, but I really like like feel of my (Epi) LP.

People pick one or the other for different reasons though. Lots of folks only ever stick with the same guitar they started with..or their first "real" guitar (Slash, Angus and Malcom, for example) and sometimes they can't see anyone playing anything else for any reason.

Some people will tell you you can't play metal on something like a Les Paul. I've seen people play metal onstage with a Telecaster. <shrug> It ends up depending on what feels good to you and what has the features you need for what you think you want to play.

Posted by: Daverino Apr 15 2008, 09:13 PM

Yeah maybe something in between like an American Strat HSS. The one with the humbucker in the bridge.

just thought id add that... because neither of these brands are better than the other, they are just different.

its ALL about what YOU like and what you wanna play. gibson and ibanez are very different guitar brands.

i personally would go for gibson, but then again, i havent tried ibanez. but judging from how guitarists who use ibanez(edit: talking about tone here ofc) sounds, i dont think its the guitar for me.
and i LOVE gibson necks btw.

sounds like a Les Paul would fit perfect. but its entirely up to you. just gotta try several different ones.

Well the LP is good for both rhythm and lead. Maybe try a Les Paul Studio. As I stated in another thread, Gabriel has one and I think he's proved it's a very versatile instrument. Everything from Neoclassical to Reggae, lead and rhythm.

But it will be a good idea like yo said to try as many guitars as you can to see which suits you best. Good luck though. It will be a fun shopping experience anyways smile.gif

Hahaha, yeah, a Gibson is a mans guitar :-)
Well, obviously my choice would be Gibson... or I should better say my choice always is Gibson since all my guitars are Gibsons ;-) But I know both sides, since in the late 80's I also had an Ibanez for about 2 years. In my opinion chosing a guitar is something very personal, no matter whatever we suggest here, YOU are the one that has to feel fine with your guitar, so my only advice can be: Go to a shop and try as many guitars as possible, and then go for the one that YOU like the most. But since you asked for opinions on the guitars, well, I have never used any of those modern Ibanez guitars, so I can't say much about them, mine was a Ibanez Roadstar II, and it was for sure not a bad guitar, it was just not the right one for me. And about Les Pauls... well, what can I say... I have about 8 or 9 Les Pauls in the moment and they all rock like hell, for me this is the ultimate guitar, and for sure VERY suitable for metal rhythm guitars wink.gif

Posted by: Hisham Al-Sanea Apr 15 2008, 09:49 PM

for sure Gibson

Posted by: superize Apr 15 2008, 09:50 PM

Thanks for all of your advises

But now i am wondering what are the different between a Gibson Les paul and a epiphone.... I know that Gibsons are more expencive but ho is the difference in tone and so on

Posted by: Marcus Siepen Apr 15 2008, 10:03 PM

Epiphone is owned by Gibson, they are the "cheap" Gibsons, produced somewhere in Asia, not in the USA. In my opinion, if you don't want to spend a lot of money on a real Gibson, but you want the Gibson feel, get an Epiphone, they are the best "copies" that you can get. My son has one and it is a really good guitar.

Posted by: Gus Apr 15 2008, 11:50 PM

Gibson or Ibanez? I guess it depends a lot on which guitars you are comparing. Compare guitars of about the same price. Try to look for the more expensive you can get and also a little bit more than that.

To my preferred style I think Gibson makes the ultimate sound (think of Guns n Roses, Led zeppelin). Ibanez is perhaps second best thing.

Gibson's are quite flexible, but Ibanez is even more flexible. I am using my prestige Ibanez to play the same stuff I needed both a Les Paul and strat before. To be fair, I think that people associated Ibanez with Metal too much. I am also using it for rock, bluesy, funky, ballads, whatever. Actually I don't play many metal songs.

Next guitar I want to buy? A Gibson Les Paul Custom (the black one of course). This guitar makes the best sound ever, but I think that exactly for that reason it is overpriced. And then I will buy a fat stratocaster (maybe Richie Sambora signature).

Also, when talking about Gibson, I prefer Les Pauls. I prefer my epiphone Les Paul custom than cheapest Gibson SG (that I tried in a shop)...

Ok....Thanks Marcus that was exactually what iwanted to know and if i would not choose a ibanez i would most likely be an epiphone becasue they are cheaper

Sounds like what you want is a fat strat .....best of both worlds....
Everyone says gibsons sound so great, IMHO some sound good, some sound bad. Like any instrument there are good and not so good.
My explorer sounds fantastic...so does my fender strat (double fat)+ it plays like a dream. My Les Paul....so so on sound and playability.
I personally like the longer scale neck of the fender/ Ibanezes, However thats all a matter of taste.

Be sure to check epi Les Paul custom. As I said, I like it more than cheapest gibson...

Just make sure to replace the Epiphone stock Pickups with an active set of Metal Humbuckers (emg 81/Sd Blackouts) because the stock pickups on epiphones are not very good and more suited for a wider range of sounds.

Posted by: Marcus Siepen Apr 16 2008, 08:17 AM

Yup, a change of pickups can really improve an Epiphone, but aside from this, if you want to save some money, go for that one instead of the "real" Gibson, you won't regret it.

Another thing to look at is the Epiphone Elitist series, made in Japan, just over a grand and every bit as good as a $1,500+ Gibson IMO.

Ive got a Gibson les paul studio, and its a dream to play on for most occasions, smooth handling, i cant say anything bad about Ibanez i just prefer Gibson. But do what you gotta do, try try try before you buy buy buy biggrin.gif
