GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Glassy Tones

Hi dudes!
It seems i ask questions about gear/effects/tones on a daily basis now - so why break the habit !!!

I was wondering what gives fender tube amps that glassy twangy sound ? Is it a special type of reverb? the preamp?

thanks!! smile.gif

I always thought the twang comes from the guitar (strat+coil) and not from the amp?!

A Fender Strat. Though the combination beween a Fender tube amp and a fender guitar is hard to beat for that sound.

The problem with me is i want every tone going laugh.gif laugh.gif Shred, Rock, Blues, Jazz.... the list goes on!

Thats how Strat single coils sounds. Probably no super special effects.

Maybe i will add a Strat to the collection one day - they sound great. But not before my Gibson !! biggrin.gif

Its not just the guitar - Fender amps are known for their glassy cleans - that would not sound the same through a Marshall. Fenders use 6L6 tubes, and make some design choices that emphasise this kind of sound.

Having said that, it is mostly the single coil strat sound you are hearing.

That is a great answer andrew thanks!! smile.gif

Is there anyway of getting a similair sound via a pedal choice?

Not really - single coil is single coil. You just can't get a humbucker to sound the same. To duplicate an amp sound you are into amp modelling via a pod - that can get you a lot of the way there.

If you need/want a fender sound from a pedal, there are these:

Whether it is any good at replicating the sound im not sure, but it is marketed as an amp in a pedal.

One other amp choice for glassy type clean - a good transistor amp like a Roland JC 120. Trannies generally don't do distortion well but clean they often excel at. (Just don't think that sticking a distortion pedal on the clean channel will give you a Mesa Boogie Triple Rec though - you'll just get a pretty nasty buzz saw blink.gif )

Apart from the valves in the Fender another thing that helps here is the quality of the reverb. Fender usually use an excellent Accutronics. But all said it's more the single coils and the actual 6L6s imo.

Cheers,
Tony

I can get a pretty close sound to this with my fender deluxe and the single coil in neck-mid or just neck positions on the parker nitefly. Add just a little reverb, a lot of fun to play around with.

Thanks for all your responses. Its just yet another tone i like, i basically like so many setups it might be an Idea for me to look at a POD ! smile.gif Although those pedals ben mentioned look good too.

Yes, I would say the pod is great for clean and Hi-Gain - lo to mid gain with touch sensitivity it doesn't do quite so well, although I do like the Vox AC30 model.

I run mine through a mixer to my monitors.

The pod as settings for playing through a regular guitar amp though it is at its best when played through a clean system like a monitor, headphones or a keyboard or PA amp - your mileage may vary though depending on the exact characteristics of your amp.

I could run it through my PC as i have wicked quality speakers. I really think ill look into one of this for christmas. It would nice to be able to play various styles without breaking the bank everytime i want a different tone!

Well you can't exactly run it through your PC - it takes the place of your existing soundcard (of course you can choose to use either). But you have to hook the output up to a stereo amp and speakers - that could be a set of computer speakers of course, but you would need to unhook them from your existing soundcard, get the right cables/adapters to hook up to your pod.

Regards,

Andrew

hey mattacuk, i have been playing though a behringer "V-ampire"half stack for about a year and a half now and it models ALOT of amps with about 16 effects built in, also has 25 chanels with 5 gates on each chanel preset from the factory. its probably one of the cheapest amps out there but sounds great and you can can really get some cool sounds out of it. i was looking for versatility as well and after looking at several amps decided on this one. the head 120 watt solid state was 199.99USD and the 4x12 cabinet 400watt was 199.99USD as well. definently an amp to try out if you dont want to "break the bank" and have versatility. just an idea. good luck i know buying guitar equipment can be very stressful sometimes.
