As part of my BSc Degree in Computing we are required to do a year long project which, to put it simply, must be challenging enough for degree level and must support a significant piece of academic research. I've chosen to pair up with a colleague and we came up with an idea over the summer which in total gave us 3 major ideas. One was to create a school resource management system for a local secondary school (High school for the US) and another was to create a music instrument out of computer chips (basically all in all we'd be creating synthesizers).
However the third one which we are very close to sealing is a music notation software project in the vein of Sibelius and Finale. We find out next week whether we get the project or not but hopefully we will as I don't see we can't and I believe it is in our skill range. I'd prefer to have this over the other 2 because I think it'd be much more interesting and more beneficial to the music industry if it was succesful. The reason I say this is that a lot of these kind of music score applications are very expensive and the ones that aren't quite frankly, don't really shine a light to the top range products. We intend for this project to become open source. For those of you who aren't sure what open source is or what it means, here is a quick little wikipedia guide for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source  . Open source music score software has of course been done before but I'm yet to find one that has really impressed me.We have many ideas and extra features that we'd like to include on this project. However we do realise there is quite a nasty time constraint on it. Plus of course this is not the only unit on the BSc so we will need to work pretty fast. Our first step will be interviewing various musicians locally include some of those in the music department at the college/university to find out what they believe are the best and worst features of the top leading music notation products and also features they'd like to have. Which brings me to one of the reasons I am posting this on GMC (other than general comments of course). If any of you with experience using notation software (doesn't have to be any of the expensive stuff) would be willing to give me a very short amount of your time in the near future I'd be very greatful. After all this there is only one thing left to say, wish us luck ladies and gentlemen

I have experience from both Finale and Sibelius (a little), I will be happy to help. Just post what opinions You are interested in here, and I will try to answer them.

I've been using Sibelius, Encore and Finale for a long time. That's a very interesting project to work on. I wish you good luck. I am happy to give you comments anytime. That's a huge job mate
I can just imagine how much code needs to be written. The starting point could be that you need to make font like notes and transfer it into midi message with all controllers that midi supports. That part could take 3 months. But of course it is doable and you will be proud when you get it done.

You probably got a marking guideline for the project Steve. If you did have a look to the criteria and mark allocation for project method and methodology. (If you didn't get one ask how it is to be awarded.) At the moment, imho, you could gain quite a few marks here if you consider/or more clearly explicate this more.

Good luck guys, making this is really a tremendous task, and I really hope you will get it up and running and make it open source. If there is some beta testing, I will be happy to check it out
