Thanks folks,

I think I'd be better sticking to the Anarchy mode shown below and landing on the root note once in a while. just say "It's the feeling of chaos I was trying to create, it's a hallmark of all of my playing" wink.gif

Seriously though, we all must have some subject that we struggle to get to sink in when it seems so easy to others. I think a lot of it with me is that I try to understand too much all in one go, like that Gambale video. It's still too much for me at my level but as with other things, a slow slow introduction to the modes/scales would be great, small chunks each building on the previous with practical application at each stage until it gets hammered into the brain. I always advocate this way of learning, that's why I often suggest box set style lessons.

Anyway, back to E minor pentatonic for me, which is only two notes off Dorian mode so I'm 5/7ths there wink.gif

Cheers

Phil

Most of the time I think about pentatonics and the few chord tones that need adding.

So the best 'slow' introduction for you would be to just add the two Dorian notes to that Em penta scale: F# and C#.
The best chord to hear this Dorian sound over is an Em7 (or Em9), not just a plain Em. Or, what Frank Zappa used to call the Carlos Santana secret chord progression; | Em7 | A | Em7 | A | ad infinitum.
Really focus on incorporating the two 'new' notes (F# and C#). Listen to how they sound and work over the chord (or chords). Do they sound good when ending a phrase or are they better in the middle of a lick or line?
Those two notes: F# and C# - are the Dorian sound ... *as opposed to F and C which would be the Phrygian sound, and are actually "avoid" tones when in strictly dorian.

Here's an Em7 to A backing track ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSsnL4l7IwI

Thanks Ken,

I'll look into it one of the days, much appreciated smile.gif I find it all very interesting, intriguing and confusing in equal measures. Then you read something like this https://www.guitarplayer.com/lessons/the-mi...ul-scale-of-all and you start thinking how far can you go with hybrid scales /modes? Can you have enough of a hybrid scale to end up with all twelve notes in it? Then it becomes a matter of tasty note choice and resolving once in a while.

I used to read a lot of Guitarist Magazine's articles about players and they'd say things like "it's amazing how he uses notes in this solo that are from a completely unrelated scale but he makes them work", one such comment was about Dimebag, was he just playing what sounded good to him and letting the academics dissect it or was he really clued up on his theory?

Cheers

Stay safe

Phil
