GMC Forum _ Ivan Milenkovic _ Appropriate Scale?

Posted by: Toroso Oct 21 2008, 08:05 PM

Hey Ivan, for a personal project, I am doing a song cover. The progression is b5,d5,a5,e5. So what scales would I use for solos/fills in this case?

For that kind of progression, I think B minor scale, and B minor pentatonic would be great.

Sorry for bumping like this Ivan. smile.gif

Toroso, progression you gave to Ivan is not actually the progression,
those power chords can be found is few other keys,
Bm is certainly first guess as Ivan said.
Try to hear or find out which of those power chords are actually
minor or major chords, that'll give you a full insight.

I don't think I understand you Muris. Those chords came from the tab. It's NOT the progression? huh.gif

Well it is but not completely,
chord means major or minor as well.
Every power chord is made from major, minor chord or even something else.
To locate key and which scale to use you should
find out origin of those power chords. smile.gif

Muris is right, there are several keys that can fit those powerchords in it, because those powerchords aren't actually chords, just fifth intervals, so they are showing up in several keys.

but in order to keep things simple, I chose B minor/D major key. You can of course experiment and see what you can come up with.

They are trying to say that the power chords are kind of like notes, it's as if you played B, D, A, E. But the nature of power chords, not actually being chords like Ivan said, means that they are neither minor nor major. They lack the third, which is the essential interval that decides if a chord is major or minor. But because they lack the third, they can go along with EITHER major OR minor chords. You need to find out what the intended "feel" of the power chords are, whether they should be major or minor.

Thanks man, I think I get the idea now. I believe this song has a minor feel to it. IMHO

Thanks all, Ivan, Muris, JVM

EDIT: OK, I took your words and did a little research. Using the tab for the intro/main riff I find that it contains: B,D,G,F#,A,C#,E. These notes fall in the B minor(natural) scale and fit the fifth fret pattern perfectly. Hey! Maybe I learned something today! smile.gif
