Hello,

Yesterday I have watch the DVD In the Flesh from Roger Waters. Something really stroke my eyes in this DVD. One of the guitarist was playing in a strange way. After a few close shot on him I realized that he was playing with reverse strings. That means that is high e string is replaced by the low e string and so on... The guy plays lefty but with all the strings reversed. I have never seen that before but that guys surely know how to play.... I made a few research on him and I realized that his father was a drummer and a close friend of the great Stevie Ray Vaughan. At the age of 16 Doyle Bramhall II was touring with Jimmy Vaughan.

I don't know if that technique as some advantage and I don't know why someone would learn like that. The nly explication I see is that he knew he was lefty and he learned on a right handed guitar.. So he just turned it and learned to play with the strings upside down...

Here are a few videos

That technique surely work well for him ..

Must be a lefty thing, as Dick Dale does the same. And I recall having read that Jimi Hendrix also strung his guitar upside down.

Jimi hendrix was putting i string upside down since he was playing with a right handed guitar on the left side. So is string where in the normal directions....

Didn't know about Dick Dale tho....

I didn't know about this guy. I can see that he is strumming upside down too...I don't really see any sense or advantages in playing like this...I guess he was lefty and learned on a right handed guitar (without swapping the strings) and then stick to it...

Dan Swano from Bloodbath does it too. I always thought it was just plain weird.

Exactly that's what I think too. Looks weird when struming upside down though smile.gif

Watching him for a whole show was indeed pretty strange..... I heard that his technique helped do bigger bend on the high e-strings.... Don't remember where i red this tho...

that makes sense because it is easier to bend downwards. You just naturaly have more strenght.

I'm left handed, but I play right handed.

Actually, when I first started I was playing lefty for awhile. I switched the strings on my brothers guitar so that I could play lefty right side up. But then when I went to buy my first guitar, the salesman asked, "How long you been playing?" I said, "about three months." He said I should switch cause it would be hard to find left handed guitars. So I did. But if I had played just an upside down guitar, I might have ended up sounding like Hendrix. smile.gif .., uh, er, wishful thinking maybe. smile.gif

Yeah I've seen that video and was blown away ohmy.gif by his upsidedown playing. Cool to watch rolleyes.gif . In some ways it must have been hard for him to figure out how to play upside down. Especially upside down at the level he plays at. It's not as though there would be many to imitate who play like him. Great video by the way. biggrin.gif

I've seen Rogers on several occasions on Eric Clapton concerts. Most prominent one would be the Crossroads festival, you can spot him playing there as well.
Regarding playing, many players played like that, Albert King being on of them too.
