Hi all ! How often is it that the very first album we heard from a band remains our favourite ? To me it seems to be the case with most bands I know.. examples..

Iron Maiden: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Metallica: Ride The Lightning
Megadeth: Cryptic Writings
Ozzy: Bark At The Moon
Joe Satriani: Surfing With The Alien

I think it may have something to do with the sounds that first attached us to that artist.. anything else we hear from them, whether good or not so good, usually has to compete against the special place we hold for the 'first album'

What are your opinions on why the first album we hear usually stays our favourite ? Or maybe it's different for you.. share some examples of albums that were even better than the first one you heard...

Varies a lot for me Ben.

Some that I still preference the 1st lp I heard include:

Pat Metheny Group - Pat Metheny Group.
Judas Priest - Stained Class.
Budgie - In for the kill
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Captain Beefheart - Shiny Beast Batchain Puller
The Clash - The Clash
Steve Vai - Flexible and Inflexible

Some that it doesn't:
Ramones - Rocket to Russia (prefer The Ramones)
BOC - Secret Treaties (prefer Agents of Fortune)
Rush - Caress of Steel (prefer Fly by Night)
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (as much as I've come to love it I still prefer Kind of Blue)

In my opinion, why some albums stick to an individual's head mainly depends on the frame of mind in which they are heard.
While a teenager can get addicted to "can I play with madness" while riding his bike and really feeling it, it cant be compared with another person in a totally different mindset listening to it. Though it will be quite appreciated, it just wont ignite the same passion for the song/album.

Also, Digital era has kindda messed up a lot of things, I remember the times of audio cassettes and me flicking through tiny booklets of maiden and megadeth albums. I knew the names of songs by heart. These days is a different story. Ipod's are full of tracks, i may know the tune really well, but try asking me the name of the song.

I liked Guns n Roses - Appetite for destruction more than any of their records after that album. Same goes for Pearl Jam's Ten.
But I liked Megadeth's Youthanasia over Countdown to extinction.

Megadeth Youthanasia but fav is RIP

Satriani extremist - fav extremist,

Steve Vai Passion and warfare- still fav

Dream Theater Images and words - fav Black clouds silver linings

but definitely I go back to the first stuff I heard, weird isn't it?

Interesting variations of replies, guys... I'm trying to think of albums that don't follow that trend for me..

Opeth, first heard Blackwater Park - fave, Ghost Reveries
Rammsteinn, Mutter - fave, Reise Reise

That's all I can think of !

Interesting thought, although as I think about it It actually doesn't really apply to me.

Iron Maiden:
1st album I heard: The Number Of The Beast / Favorite album: Powerslave and The Final Frontier

Dream Theater:

1st album I heard: Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence / Favorite album: Systematic Chaos

The Sword:

1st album I heard: Age Of Winters / Favorite album: Warp Riders

Rare cases in which it does apply, and I struggle to think of these.

Nevermore:
This Godless Endeavor

Metallica:
Master Of Puppets

Hammerfall:
Crimson Thunder
