I know, I know. Yet another Gear Acquisition Syndrome thread. I'm not even a gear head as many of you know. I like a guitar and an amp. I then like to plug said guitar into said amp and make sounds come out. I then like to forget about the technological things occurring and then concentrate my energies on crafting music and releasing it, which is my absolute favourite part of the whole process.
But, occasionally, even I go weak at the knees for a new piece of gear.. and, as some of you may already have guessed from my posts in recent times, I want an 8.
Here it be; the Ibby RGIR28F.
Part of the Iron Label range, aimed at people who want to make heavy stuff happen with their wood. I took Todd's advice and decided to steer clear of the base level RG8 and have set my sights on this. The annoying thing is waiting until the right moment to strike. (in other words, money) but my decision is pretty much 100% made and it's just a matter of time until you see me with one.
Now why do I want it? I want to go lower. I don't listen to that djenty stuff or whatever but I do love the sounds of the 8 string. It's disgustingly majestic and I want some of that disgusting majesty for myself. The challenge will be not to sound like everybody else by overdoing the droning low F#, as tempting as it will be! But here's the thing. I love writing music so part of that is writing music which is new to me. Pushing the boundaries on each new release. The abundance of awesome gear we have makes it easier than ever for us musicians to stretch our musical legs at a much faster rate than was possible before. A kid can learn guitar on a 6 string, complete with pro sounding guitar software at his/her disposal and then be churning out gut busting riffage on an 8 string in a couple of years. It's all possible.
That means it's potentially possible for musicians to expand their musical voices like never before as well. What I call the Zeppelin effect. Led Zeppelin are one of those bands that have been able to get away with adding new things to their sound on each record yet still retain their fans. I think people would be disappointed if one of their records sounded the same as the previous one. Other bands haven't been able to get away with such experimentation, so it seems. Maybe I'm wrong and it's only in hindsight that Zeppelin have been lauded for being so musically open minded. Maybe at the time, people were really p****d. Either way, all this gear and guitar software means that you can pretty much tap into any sound you can conceive in your mind.
Doesn't mean you don't still have to practise, though.
So, my one and only Q to you today is what gear are you lusting after right now But.... and this is the important part, WHY? What will it do for you that you can't do right now?
I've got my eye on a 2013 RG Prestige that was released for the japanese market. I just need to sell a guitar first
An early 70s Martin D-28 or D-35 ...
It's the acoustic, steel string sound I want. Punchy, loud, even.
I want some new headphones!!!! Mine are so old but still function. That's next on my list definately.
Ben I like your caveman method. "Me ben, I plug in, you make sound, where's my club?"
A soldano SLO100 with matching 4×12 and a room where i can turn the amp all the way up
Sweet dreams...
Im totally jonesing for a telecaster. Kris buying that FGN is only making me worse
I dont need it and Im not sure Im even worthy of it but Im fairly certain it will make me at least 45% cooler.
That guitar looks monstrous Ben!
I'm currently not lusting about any specific piece of music gear though I must say that I'm just slightly getting an itch to try out other basses. Primarily, one made by Musicman or Fender Precision Bass. I have a Jazz bass which I really like and feel comfortable with but I must say that the tone is just slightly getting "the same" On the other hand, I don't play often on my amp (I should!) and I still get amazed by its sound. I played both a gig and home practice stuff on it after a long pause in not using it (using home monitoring system for practice instead) and man - bass + amp sound is just wow. It's just the way amp reacts to dynamics and moves air that I tend to forget how cool it is.
Back to the topic though, I've been looking at PC builds lately and found some cool "lust" configurations but I don't think I'll pull the trigger just yet. This would probably be high up on my gear (GAS) upgrades list as I'd like to build a separate workstation for music and video production. Personally, I always find the recording process and fiddling with all that stuff as a bit of roadblock for my creativity and music, so I have this idea of trying to make the recording process as smooth as possible. Ultimately, everything should be installed, working well and setup so I can just plug in and hit the recording button and concentrate on music.
BTW - looking at guitarists exploring 7 string and now 8 string guitars really makes me wonder why I never went for a 5 or 6 string bass? 6 string bass certainly looks like a beast
What I want is a too good to pass up deal on a great fender strat. What I need is some kind of recording interface. I am very interested in trying out an Orange combo amp and a Kemper or Axe FX.

500 bucks and I got now money
I actually got my Digitech Gnx2 3 days ago and have spent the last days trying to figure it out to get some spiff tones out of it
So at the moment I actually have no idea what gear I want next.
I'd like to get a seven string within the next year. Not sure what kind of model yet. I might sell one of my guitars to get one…
I WANT MY "NOW" MONEY!!!
Currently got http://www.gak.co.uk/rs/pictures/tn1_109841.jpg on pre order. Released at NAMM 2015, could be three months
I wouldn't mind a 7 just to own one but I'm struggling with 6
Have you seen the Schecter Hellraiser C9 Ben? http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Schecter-Hellraiser-C-9-9-String-Electric-Guitar-Black-Cherry/11S5?origin=product-ads&utm_campaign=*PLA+Shop+-+All+Products&utm_medium=vertical_search&network=google&adgroup=**All+Products&merchant_id=1279443&product_id=48965d1&product_country=GB&product_partition_id=116982139519&gclid=CjwKEAjw3YipBRDL2bHhjLmFkQsSJADtzktjapUaGNUr8Q2TBnUgqbydBf2ALBFB37xnZREnt1sxgRoC87vw_wcB it is
I like it (The Strat that is) the one coil on the pickups looks white but it's chrome.
Not the best demo but you can see the looks better here.
The 9 string set is Ernie Ball 9-String (.009/.012/.016/.026/.036/.046/.064/.080/.105) apparently standard tuning is EBGDAEBF#C# but some use EADGCFBbDG on mine and look at it as a short scale bass with an extended high range
Over my head
Just ordered one of these. I know some people say the scale length is wrong for a 7 but the review below the pic says otherwise. Needed some retail therapy, lost a friend on Saturday so I bought this and will name it Bob after him.
Go to 00:45 to miss the madness.
I'm looking for a new pair of hands with faster fingers for years now, they seem out of stock
Bob arrived today and I am really impressed. I bought it without trying it which I know you shouldn't but it is really really sweet. Only thing that's a bit off are the bird inlays at frets 17, 21 and 24. Not very defined at all but then they have to cut the cost somewhere.
I love it and it's a beautiful tribute to a lovely bloke.
Phil
I'd like one of these On display in GERMANY @ Musik Meese! It's the future of mixing/studio production
I don't know what I want next, but I know that if I just buy *one* more piece of gear, then I'll finally be a good guitarist .
Also, just found out about FLYING FADERS on this DAW CONTROLLER from presonus. Must have!!!
There yer go Scott

Nice fender:) White + black pickguard is my favourite configuration along with swamp ash natural wood + black pickguard:)
I "need" a guitar with a floyd rose, but still don't know what to buy. Maybe I will just try to find Schecter Devil same as mine, but with a floyd rose, because I like the shape, and am sure that it "plays" for me well. In my city there are no proper music stores, so it is impossible to go to a shop and try out tons of guitars (at least good guitars, not the cheapest stuff :/ ).
Very nice guitar Phil! I would really like to hear what the neck pickup sounds like.
Bought some strings yesterday at a small guitar store. My eyes stopped at a very nice Les Paul in lemonburst. It was a used guitar from 2013 with a few dongs but not like heavy relic. It had sheptone pickups - not the original Gibson once. Store owner offered me to play...sure I did not!
But there was a moment when I thought I should really have a les paul too
Congrats on your new axe!! Reminds me a bit of the Adrian Jackson!
Thanks you, I don't know of that guitar. What I like about it is that the coils nearest the neck and bridge are chrome, it looks really sweet.
Neck really suits my hand too.
There yer go Scott
Not good enough to demo a guitar mate
I really want to have a go at it, maybe this weekend I'll just wing it and bash something out. Thanks for that comment mate, made me smile
Would also love one of these. Awesome little beast. Ace is a vastly underrated player IMHO
Cool I dig those mini pedals. You can fit twice as many on the pedal board
Presonus TubePre V2
Score! Try it before going in to your audio interface when doing dry/direct guitar recording in to a plugin like AMPLITUBE it will really thicken it up! Also, try it before your amp on the dirty channel. Experiment with settings of course And start with them very low and work your way up.
Thanks Todd
Happy to help Record some bits and give us a demo!: )
If you head over to the "Gas, what next" thread, I've put some test pieces on there last night
Cheers
