Noise Control! Options

I'm happily jamming away, pinch harmonic scream during a solo, and the dogs joins in singing a howl... my mum screams if you don't turn that down noise control will come take it away, aww man!
I normally play on low volumes but I've got good neighbours which tell me to crank it up.

I was just wondering if any of you fellows have been visited by noise control or an angry neighbour/parent due to making sure your neighbourhood can hear your talent! Any great stories out there, I'm sure there must be a few? Anyone got the walls is shake, windows to break, or dogs to howl?

Many years ago when I was a teenager a neighbour called round to ask me to turn the stereo down. He didn't live next door though - our house was no.15 and he was at no.3 so I guess it was a bit loud .

We used to have band practice in a small village (the next village down from where we currently practice) and one day an old man came in, complaining about the noise.. apparantly he'd just come out of hospital, we'd ruined his last 3 Sundays in a row etc.. said he was gonna complain etc. Well, the commitee of women who ran the village hall didn't like this old dude anyway and they were on our side. However, to tick all the boxes they got a woman from Environental Health to come out and measure the noise level of the band with a decibel meter. (She didn't know what she was doing anyway, full of BS) Turns out we weren't that loud but you could hear it outside of course.

The hall comittee ruled in our favour and told the old dude he didn't have the right to complain about any activities in the hall (he even complained about an aerobics class.. being such an old man he should have been grateful for the action, you know what I mean ?). However, when we thought the matter was resolved, the old guy got really nasty and personal with the local women and threatened them with all sorts of things. To make their life easier they had to stop allowing loud music in the hall

Sorry to hear that. Yeah, I had some problems with neighbours years ago, bot they just got used to hearing me play loud. But some requests were made, as I occasionally had desire to put my Hiwatt DR103 head to "4" in the appartment

I've never had problems regarding noise with neighbours in my home or rehearsal room. But I remember that when I was younger we use to do rehearsals in our drummer's house's garden. In that time Cirse didn't exits but I was a big friend of the drummer and use to jam. We always have problems with a neighbour. Once we did a party + concert and the neighbour called the police. We couldn't continue playing...

I had that problem with my old band. Not in rehearsals, but in gigs!
Now in Germany there is this stupid law (well, one of many...) that after midnight the volume in a bar has to be kinda low. Guess that makes sense when the neighbours wanna sleep, but anyways...we played a gig in that bar and were finished, but the crowd wanted more. So we played on, and short after midnight we saw blue lights flashing and a minute later two policemen came in, chatted happily with the owner and walked up to us. "Hey guys, just two more songs okay?" Turned out that the guy who called them lived across the street and called basically every night cause something was too loud for his taste but the police has to come out and check the situation. This actually happened three gigs in row over the course of a year.

What a great thread! I have been visited many times by law enforcement telling me I need to turn the music down over many years, almost exclusively in my younger years lol. the funny thing is that it was the first time and the last time that were the most memorable.
The first time was back in my early 20's, I was over at my friends Charlie (bassist) and Neil's (drummer) trailer house. We knew there could be a problem jamming there since it was a residential neighborhood so we sectioned off a small part of the living room area with a bunch of mattresses and pillows and blankets and whatever else we could find and started jamming away, we were all pretty green so it was alot of improv noise really so anyways we are jamming away maybe an hour or two into it and everyone all the sudden just stops playing, except me. I was deep in trance jamming away concentrating on my fret board when I see someone has a flashlight shineing on me , so I stop and look up and its a police officer! and he says "hey it sounds great young man but we got some complaints from your neighbors that it was pretty loud, he goes on to tell us all that he can see that we went to great lenghts to try to keep the volume down and said he wassnt going to issue any citations but please try to turn down a bit so we dont have to come back. he was very cool.

The last time was my first New Years in this house at the lake and I was having a party. So we were jamming in the garage and a friend comes and gets my attention and says there are cops at your door man. So I go to the door and step outside and there is an officer with his hand on his hoster asking me to step away from the door, so I step away and to my left , kind of around the corner of the house I spot 4 more officers also with hands on thier holsters. And I stop and look back at the first officer and said ,Whoa Man this is one helluva responce for a small party of a friday night. He then informed me that my neighbor (who was.... well lets just say we didnt see eye to eye) had told the Troopers that we were shooting firearms off over here so they had to take extra precautions. Anyway I explained my situation with the neighbor and that there were no firearms at all on the premises, the officers then went back to his place to talk to him again, then back to my place to talk to me and basically just qave me a warning for the loud music and that the guy had said" well maybe it wassnt gunfire after all".. I am glad that guy isnt my neighbor anymore, he got divorced and moved out of state.

That first cop encounter was cool though, I like it when people are reasonable and approach their job with common sense and respect.. and empathy.

i used to turn a lot the volume up when i was on my teen years, but now i try to take care of my ears more and save them for the next years and of the gigs, live i just can't do it without a wall of sound behind

Everywhere the same problems! I had big problems with the neighbors! They threatened me, pulling my ears, my father forbid me to play early in the morning and late at night ... I survived everything and always reminds me of when I hear of a new guitar kid in the block!
