I'm talking about a single note or two that in some way gripping, moving, emotional, provocative. When you hear it, it makes you make a stink face or stop listening in a conversation and your compelled to feel what the artist suggests. I have a few in mind but here is the one moment that made me think about this topic.

Greg uses this idea a lot in this song but @34 sec he really digs in. Its like a brooding evil tension for a moment. Any ideas on "Howe" he does it?

I want to hear your moments, please share.

Ah nice one, Howe is great! smile.gif

I have a few, but two ones here from Andy Timmons

First is from the song: Move On, happens at around 2:03, some kind of percussive rake thing, gets me every damn time!! haha

The other is from Lydia comes right after the 0:57 mark, so 0:58.. It's a bend, that just sounds indescribable awesome to me, hah

I have a lot, but I will mention two:

The first is from Andy Timmons - Gone (I have so many from Andy but this time I will mention just one), is exactly at 2:46 - 2:48 and create an awesome tension.
The second is from Errorhead - Heaven. At 3:25-3:28, I really love the idea of using successively raking. For me that sound give me an indescribable great mood. I'm really obsessed with using raking, so Marcus Deml style will always be for my taste wink.gif

Man I knew Andy was gonna be on this board. His playing is non stop expression. I think Andy has a very nice approach to bending, he has a pre bend lick in electric gypsy like the one you reference and it moved me too! Thanks for sharing

Hi Monica! I remember when I listened to pandora radio a few years back and every time I heard one of Andy's songs is rush over to my phone to hit the play more like button. After listening to his albums he is one of my top players.

I'll have to listen to more music by Marcus Demi, I like his playing in that song. Thanks for your examples, their great.

from 42 thru the 57 second mark. Love that linear tapping! smile.gif

PS: I thought I saw in another thread that you wanted to tackle a song on the album "Introspection." So I thought I would share this link with you for tabs and backings in case you weren't aware of it.

Here's another one by Guthrie Govan.
Probably my favorite bend of all time, maybe.. Hah

The bend comes around the 1:35 mark, but listen from 1:30 or so, he does some basic harmonics just right before he makes that awesome bend.

One of my favorite songs back in the days, especially the solo part, always made me go what the freakity frack, did just happen? when I started out playing the guitar.
The tap pick slide thing in the Rock You Like a Hurricane solo by Scorpions, starts around the 2:32 mark

I don't really go 'OMG' as much anymore, listened to it way too much, but yeah it definitely had its precious moments in my life!

Greg Howe changed my view on what was possible on guitar. At the time I heard yngwie and thought there was nothing like it. See I was very sheltered musically, Metallica Alice n chains pantera and malmsteen were the only bands I knew. Started to broaden my palette with Gilbert, Steve morse, Vinnie Moore and that's when Greg was introduced to me. There are 2 albums I can't listen too, IMO way too cock rock, but the instrumental albums I still can listen too.

Thank you for the link, I bought the tab book years ago but could never play any of it! Probably still can't but I'm going to try.

Oh yes that is great bend, it sounds like a human screaming wrooowww. I like how nice the guitar sits in the mix, very upfront and clear.

The scorpions was one of my first CDs I ever bought and I bought it because of that guitar solo! So much energy! Thanks for sharing those tunes. They're a great choise for this post.

Hey Jim smile.gif If you come to ask me, all of these things come from inside the artist. It's not the technique, but the way in which one artist feels in that specific moment. I know it sounds abstract, but trust me, you can employ every technique possible, but if you don't genuinely feel something in the moment in which you lay down a phrase, it won't have that effect. Now people perceive things differently and what might move a mountain for someone, leaves another indifferent smile.gif

What you should do, is start experimenting - I heard very nice things in those phrases you played in Taka's collab wink.gif They have drawn my attention without being complicated. There will be times and moments in which you will feel stale and you'll think you're not able to lay down anything worth recording. These moments come and go just like the inspirational moments. You need to understand how to harness this power when you feel it coming - a phrase can be expressed in many ways smile.gif Find the most expressive one in your reach and use it wink.gif

Rich is spot on, it's a Hendrix style double stop. Here's how I heard it:

Attached Image

Use the index to fret the A and D strings & the 3rd finger to hammer onto the 9th fret then slide it to the 10th. Use index / 3rd for the next two as well. You need to get 2 strings ringing at the same time to get that nice growl.
