Here's the product description. This is the real deal, direct recording over internet with zero latency.
Very pricey though.. :-( http://www.sourceelements.com/source-connect/ -------------------- www.youtube.com/Wallimann

Exceuse a dumb question but what is it used for exactly? (this is after readine about it)
Someone has a studio somewhere and you record your take over the net and it gets stored as a track in their DAW? Same as the old school sending takes to an ftp or in email? Quicker and more convenient for the studio. Right? -------------------- My bands homepage

All digital recording is about managing latency - most DAW's already compensate for the 10ms or so latency that exists in direct recording. Doing it this way means they have to handle higher latencies is all - the question is how high? You could use this to track a remote performer to a backing track I am sure, but I wouldn't expect it to work if you wanted to record 2 people in different locations at the same time, unless one of them was at the DAW doing the recording.

As fiberoptics are beeing integrated in networks all around the globe, latency shouldn't be that much of a problem... But are we there yet? Not everywhere.. If someone still doesen't have fiber installed to their house, this wouldn't be very practical. But if someone is connected all the way to the other parts node (is it servers? or directly from one PC to another?) with fiberoptics... It could be possible.

What would be cool, is that this technology will allow for a virtual band to rehearse real time, even play a concert.

Don't confuse latency with bandwidth though - they are related but not the same thing. But you are right, technology and time are both on our side - in 10 years time people will wonder why anyone ever bothered to go to a studio to record ... maybe -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

You know nothing is, faster than c. To link hosts in the USA to hosts in Europe in Realtime (latency of less than 5ms) this thing would need to be faster than light. Which isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Which isn't going to happen anytime soon. - Jonas Exactly - East Coast USA to London - around 3000 miles, that's 16ms even for electrons traveling down a single piece of wire. But in fact, those electrons get switched through a number of routers, each of which add their own latency. So as I said above, it's about managing latency. This will work fine for recording remote performers where latency is 1 way and can be measured and compensated for, but will not work well for people jamming together where the communication needs to be 2 way - 32ms delay is enough to really ruin the mood! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
