GMC Forum _ Cosmin Lupu _ Treydeschamp's Metalcore Training Program

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 18 2012, 07:52 AM

Hey there mister Trey biggrin.gif this here is YOUR thread wink.gif feel free to use it and we can start with you telling me a little bit about what your musical goals are and if you would have some recorded materials, that would be even better smile.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 18 2012, 05:00 PM

Hey Cosmin! Thanks so much for the help!

I honestly want to progress my skills to a higher level. I want to build the speed that it takes to play metalcore style solo's such as newer Children of Bodom or even Bullet for My Valentine style speed.

Along with that I want to being more accurate with my rhythm playing. It is a huge goal for me to start a band once I get to college just for fun but to do this I know I'm going to have to progress.

Once I get home tonight I;ll make a video for you to analyze where I am at.

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 18 2012, 11:02 PM

Well, here goes nothing!

I already see mistakes in my timing.

I had to rush this video out because I have to head out to my father's house soon. The second little bit is a Bullet For My Valentine song I used to mess around with. Of course, I messed it up! tongue.gif

But hey, I'm learning here right?

Hopefully this gives you a little bit of an idea where I'm at.

P.S. Sorry for the end. I kind of didn't realize I kept going. I was messing around with speed runs before I made the video (I know, it's not that fast!) but still. Like I said in the video, "I need to work on bends."

Hey there Trey, I can't see the vid, man sad.gif can you try uploading the link again?

thank you

Sorry man, I tried to embed it. I'll just post a straight link and go from there.

Thanks man.

So after practicing a beginner lesson and having some difficulty with it I just decided to go ahead and be honest.

I'm at a beginner level.

Also, I don't know much about theory so I'm really starting fresh. I have been trying to learn the notes of the fretboard though. Hopefully that will help me some.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 20 2012, 05:44 PM

My friend, you don't sound like a beginner smile.gif at all. You got great tone and a very precise right hand - great timing and good tightness. You have a pretty good foundation for everything here smile.gif Now, what you need, is a bit of arranging things wink.gif

I think that we should divide our practice schedule into:

1) Technique - what's your favorite? And besides that articulation - bending and vibrato of course biggrin.gif
2) Phrasing - analyzing lead lessons which contain interesting phrasing elements.
3) Rhythm - riffing will do for starting out
4) Theory - the language you need to speak tongue.gif

These should be the starting points wink.gif now, after you tell me if this is ok with you, I shall choose a few lessons I want you to look over and start learning for each of the points stated above wink.gif

In the mean time, any music/ guitar/ life related question can help out and if there is an answer I can provide, I'll most gladly help wink.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 20 2012, 05:57 PM

That sounds awesome man!

As far as techniques the one's that I really want to start learning are:
1. Hammer-ons and pull-offs- eventually I want to work my way to some point of shred.
2. Sweep Picking- same reason as the last
3. Power Chord sliding- I'm just not very good at switching fast between certain power chords and sliding. I'll either slide too far, are too short.

I'm very open to ALL techniques though!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 21 2012, 02:23 PM

Great! Let's get to work than, shall we? wink.gif

I got two assignments for ya:

For hammer on/ pull off development - http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginners-Corner-22-Hammer-On/ don't look at it like it's easy smile.gif I suggest you perfect it so that we can start from the bottom up, as healthy as possible with building your technique wink.gif

For power chord sliding - here's one which will work wonders wink.gif http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Staccato-Power-Chords/

Let me know what you think and let's rock!

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 21 2012, 04:27 PM

You gotta start somewhere right?

I'm down with those lessons. To be honest that lesson that you gave me from Ben has actually been on my mind.

The reason why I was worrying about the power chord slides is because of the Metal for Beginners lesson 1 by Pavel. That intro kicks my butt! I've been working on that and I just cant get that intro.

Anyway, I'll get to practicing those tonight! It might be a few days before I have a good take up due to this being finals week.

Thanks Cosmin!

Nothing to it my friend! I'm here for ya wink.gif

Thanks man!

Also, I have a question. My video recording equipment is not that great but I do have a POD GX so that I can record through RockBand on my mac.

Is it okay if I throw some soundcloud links your way sometimes rather than video?

The only really good video recording material I have is my iphone but it's a hassle to set it up click a backing track and record. It also messes up my timing.

Sure mate wink.gif no sweat, whatever is good for ya smile.gif

I think I can get that hammer-on/pull-off lesson down by tomorrow but I'm not going to rush it.

Expect to see something from at least that in the next 2-3 days.

biggrin.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 21 2012, 11:51 PM

So much for the next few days tongue.gif

I got home a learned the lesson fairly quickly. I think I did well although I can see where the very last note on the first section screwed up a little (I couldn't get it to ring out).

I uploaded it to the REC board. Check it out and tell me what you think!
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=44495&b=1&st=0&p=0&#entry0

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 22 2012, 02:48 AM

Also, I'm going to do another take of that hammer-on lesson because I know it isn't perfect but I wanted to get feedback quickly so I uploaded it to the REC (i'll probably do the same with the next).

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 22 2012, 10:54 PM

Hey Trey smile.gif congrats again on a good take man! What you need to focus on for this one:

- equal attack for each note - that means that all your notes should have the same intensity in this case - regardless of the fingers used wink.gif
- the timing was good but you hesitated slightly in some points smile.gif

In my opinion, you must send a bit more time practicing this lesson and then taking it out to parade, so that it may be perfect!

let's see the next one wink.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 22 2012, 10:59 PM

Oh I plan on it! The hammer-ons are so hard when there is no gain backing it up.

However, I know once I get it down it will sound great!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 22 2012, 11:01 PM

wink.gif that's why I chose this lesson first - NO GAIN... biggrin.gif without the proper pain laugh.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 23 2012, 12:28 AM

So your a jokster tongue.gif I can tell it is going to make me better, even if it is a beginner level lesson.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 23 2012, 07:40 AM

wink.gif I will torment you a lot in the near future so, I have to take that off your mind by making you laugh at least laugh.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 23 2012, 12:23 PM

I'm planning to start working on that other lesson today.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 24 2012, 11:45 AM

Great Trey smile.gif hit me when you're ready wink.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 24 2012, 05:15 PM

Started working on the lesson yesterday. It feels very awkward. I don't feel very fluid witht the sturmming technique. huh.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 25 2012, 02:57 PM

becoming a good rhythm guitarist means you must be able to understand grooves, break them down and play them sometimes almost on the spot smile.gif Strumming through all sorts of patterns will have an important role in leading you to the top wink.gif

Work work work! ...and when you think you're done...work some more biggrin.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 26 2012, 03:26 PM

So things are looking good with this lesson. I don't want to rush the take though because I want to get it right. Stay tuned wink.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 28 2012, 03:38 PM

Take your time amigo wink.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 4 2012, 04:57 PM

Hey Cosmin.

Just wanted to check in with you. It's been a busy week so I haven't been able to record a take but the lesson is coming along nicely.

I'll try to get it to you within the next few days.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 4 2012, 06:11 PM

Hola Trey! Sure man, I'm here wink.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 16 2012, 03:41 AM

I'm sorry this has taken so long Cosmin.

So things unexpectedly came up but I'm going to go ahead and give the lesson a shot tomorrow morning.

Expect something then wink.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 16 2012, 10:44 AM

Hey Trey! Yeah, man, I totally know how life swings by and mocks our plans smile.gif take it easy mate, do a thorough job and let me know when you're done smile.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 10 2012, 05:27 PM

Hey Cosmin, it's been a while. I know I keep pushing this lesson back. At first it was life getting in the way. Now I'm just getting pissed off with the lesson.

I just can't get it down. My timing has gotten better with it but I can get the end right and it's driving me insane.

Is there anyway we can just do a different lesson and maybe come back to this one?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 13 2012, 11:32 AM

Howdy Trey, if you feel like it, sure smile.gif Let's do this, but what do you have in mind? I want you to think about one direction which you feel like you need to improve towards and I will pick some good lessons from where you can choose smile.gif I think it's crucial that you like the one you will work on biggrin.gif

let's rock

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 14 2012, 05:11 PM

Thanks Cosmin,

Right now I want to build solid lead playing.

I want to get faster and accurate. wink.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 15 2012, 09:50 AM

Ahoy Trey!

I stumbled upon this lesson, which features great phrasing and tone control smile.gif I think it's a good entry point for lead playing biggrin.gif

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/neoclassical_solo_for_beginners/

What do you think?

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 15 2012, 03:45 PM

This is completely hilarious to me! laugh.gif

I was recently looking at this lesson a few days ago and actually started learning it. I'm definitely down for learning this one!

My vibrato is kind of......plain, so I'm going to take my time on this one. DEFINITELY not as long as I've been taking though wink.gif

Awesome choice Cosmin.

Ready to do so!

Stay tuned!

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 16 2012, 06:46 PM

I must say, this lesson is going well. I feel like I'm getting a very good grasp on this one. It feels so smooth and is sounding fairly fluid.

I think I'll have a take in the next day or so.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 17 2012, 04:36 PM

Glad to know mate! smile.gif You know, when you love a piece of music, the dedication you put in the learning effort is multiple times greater wink.gif Please, tell me whenever you don't feel like learning something, ok? We can always find alternatives for things wink.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 17 2012, 04:54 PM

Sounds good Cosmin!

I went ahead a finished up my take on the Staccato Power Chords lesson. It sounds awful when played because I can't get Garageband to pick up palm muting and I have not one clue how to mix or master a track.

http://soundcloud.com/trey-deschamp/staccato

Tell me what you think! I might try to get a video take in and edit it up for the REC program.

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 17 2012, 08:30 PM

I uploaded my take. Curious as to what your grade will be tongue.gif

I recorded a quick take of the first half of the Neoclassical lesson.

I wasn't going for perfection. I wanted to give you an idea of where I am so that you could hear mistakes or find good qualities.

That scale run definitely needs work although I fee that I'm getting a stronger grasp on it quicker.

http://soundcloud.com/trey-deschamp/neocalssical-solo-for

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 18 2012, 07:56 AM

Hey Trey! This is GOOD progress man wink.gif You got good timing and the flow is almost there - you see how the notes flow into each other in the original take? That's what you should aim for, as you are 80% there wink.gif Otherwise, polish up the faster passages and you're there my friend smile.gif

Looking forward for the next take - I think we'll be ready pretty quickly with this one!

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 18 2012, 12:11 PM

I'm hoping to have at least a full run through up by the end of the day. It definitely won't be the final take as I'm a perfectionist.

I'd just like to get it in to you so you can see what's going on.

I'm getting the speed run better, I think my main focus on this one needs to actually be my accuracy when it comes to hitting the notes as well as vibrato.

Which brings me to a question, along with this lesson, could we maybe work on vibrato? I was thinking of working on Ben's Vibrato Odyssey series. My vibrato definitely needs work and I feel to get that nice sound out of the notes I need a solid vibrato.

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jul 18 2012, 06:17 PM

http://soundcloud.com/trey-deschamp/neocalssical-solo-scale-run

I made a take of that scale run so that you could see how it's coming along. I think it's very good but it could get a little bit better.

It's at the actual time. Tell me what you think! cool.gif

Hey Trey! I love the fact that you are a perfectionist and I think that the run is ok at this point but it is a bit rigid - it needs more flow somehow. Try to work more with the backing track and that flow will come for certain wink.gif

Ben's series are great! I totally agree on tackling those smile.gif Shall we start with the first one?

I actually went ahead and started lesson one of ben's series yesterday. It's a quick lesson but it is going to take me some time to master. I'm having trouble getting my guitar to sustain the right way.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 23 2012, 02:05 PM

It's either a problem linked to the guitar or to the fact that you are not yet used with this sort of phrasing. Which one is the right guess? smile.gif

Ben's vibrato lessons are great, so let's see where we can get with them, shall we? Anything else you got on your mind, regarding a particular thing which you would like to learn?

I think we are on the right track. Lead METAL practice and then some practical technique training is doing me good.

I actually think the answer to your question is neither. When I'm just playing the guitar the notes ring out. When I connect to my computer to record the lesson, the notes aren't fully picked up.

Im thinking that garageband doesn't pick up certain frequencies.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 24 2012, 08:42 AM

If you are MAC user, I surely recommend Logic Audio - I used the PC interface and it rocks!

I have never used Garageband so I don't have any experience with it, but Logic is surely good smile.gif Can you get your hands on it, mate?

The problem that I see with this (keep in mind I've only seen half of the video) is that after 30 days it isn't free anymore. I don't have the money to get the full version of this.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 28 2012, 07:44 AM

Hey mate smile.gif watch the whole video and first of all try to record something using the advice given in the movie. If the results are good, then it is a good time to ask yourself if you want to buy it. But first, try it wink.gif

How's playing, otherwise? Do you maybe have a take that I can see with the vibrato lessons? smile.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Aug 27 2012, 01:21 PM

Hey Cosmin,

Sorry it's been a while. My senior year of high school just started two weeks ago so I've been very busy. The week before that (the week I last posted) I had to go on a team training trip.

No I do not have a take of Ben's Vibrato Odyssey because I can get garageband to sustain the notes. I'd play it through my amp but it died on me.

Either way, I still am practicing the neoclassical lesson. I'll be starting to record it within the next week for you.

Stay tuned cool.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 27 2012, 03:32 PM

Hello Trey smile.gif Well, as long as you're practicing, things are ok, if you stop that, well that's when the problem arises sad.gif I'm waiting for the take and any other questions you might have in the mean time wink.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Aug 28 2012, 02:08 PM

I'll be trying to record at take today.

I'm essentially done with the lesson. In the mean time, could we maybe start a lesson on metalcore riffing. Keep in mind I'll only be able to drop to D.

Hey Trey, well, whatever I will shoot your way, you are always free to play in drop D, but if you want to submit a REC, then I think you will need to use the original tuning. How about this one? -> http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Killswitch-Engage-Style/ I know you like it biggrin.gif Tell me if it's too difficult. Ok? I chose it because when you like something, you are more prone to nailing it biggrin.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Aug 28 2012, 06:49 PM

I'm down for that one! I'm in the process of selling my pride and joy ESP so hopefully when I do sell it and I get a new guitar I'll be able to submit a REC take.

Here it is!

I'll be doing a REC take later.

Tell me what you think. It's the best that I could do.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 29 2012, 07:56 AM

Hey Trey, this is NOT bad at all! The bends and vibrato could be smoother and it could use a bit more groove, but it is technically correct smile.gif We are taking things at the interpretation level here wink.gif

Would you be up for a take that has this correct approach you already nailed AND the interpretation? tongue.gif

For sure! Before I saw this I ended up throwing it up on the REC. The only problems that everyone has seen so far is my vibrato which is something I've already known that I need to work on. I'm to comfortable with using one finger and it doesn't sound as fluid or strong.

I'm planning on getting an ESP EC-1000 deluxe. I need something without a floyd rose. I need to be able to tune down and my floyd rose doesn't allow me to do this.

A fixed bridge will always do justice biggrin.gif I promised myself not to get floyd rose guitars ever tongue.gif Anyway, working on your vibrato should be a constant pursuit and thus, I was thinking we should start that too - what do you think?

This one would be great to begin with: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Vibrato-Odyssey/

Already finished that one Cosmin wink.gif

I tried to record a take for you to hear but the sustain cuts out. I think it's my settings in garageband although I know nothing about tampering with settings/mixing other than adjusting my amp.

I can try but it'll probably be the same thing. I have to play through my computer because my cab shut down randomly. My head unit works but the cab is done for.

Good stuff!

Here is the clip so you can hear the cutoff.

http://soundcloud.com/trey-deschamp/bens-vibrato-odyssey-1-demo-1

I have no clue how to change it. Some takes are better give or take but here is a quick example of what I'm talking about.

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Aug 30 2012, 07:34 PM

Well, I decided to go ahead and try and record it through my webcam so there is no soundcloud clip to go with it.

The audio may not be so great but I'll be uploading it to the REC program. I've got a nice handle on the vibrato from that.

Question, could you possible explain to me the scales that are being used in the lessons you refer to me as well as how they apply? I'd like to not only learn to play the lesson but learn to understand the lesson itself. Like why the scale is being used and how I could apply what I'm learning to my playing.

Great! I'll be on it once you put it up wink.gif

Sure thing! I find it VERY important to be able to extract a concept and use it in your own playing later on. First things first, we will tackle the theoretical aspects of each scale and I will ask you questions then, extrapolated from those biggrin.gif How does that sound? In this way, I will make sure that you have understood what's going on behind the playing and that you can apply those concepts in your playing - at least theoretically. Understanding a theoretical aspect does not consequentially lead to using that concept immediately - inspiration has to kick in at some point and for that, you need to help your subconscious mind by listening to A LOT of music containing that specific element you are aiming for smile.gif

Please let me know if there's any particular lesson on which you'd like to start this procedure wink.gif

I got it smile.gif Trey, the premises are good - that means that you start in the right way, but since the cutoff is coming into play, I can't say if you finish the vibrato in a nice even sustained way. This is the only thing that I wanted to add, be more consistent with the vibrato - I can feel that even if the cutoff wouldn't've been there, the note could've used more sustain from the vibrato. What say you?

That sounds awesome! Like the threads title says. It's a metalcore program. If it helps out my metal core stye of playing I'm down to learn it. I will say that I think it is important to implement blues techniques in here and there with metal since metal is so heavily based off of blues.

Alright! Well, all of the stuff here is actually a combo between the minor pentatonic scale and the minor scale - they always go well together hand in hand and if you want that extra punch wink.gif you can include the blue note and combine the minor scale with the blues scale.

Now, first thing, the main riff is based on the pentatonic shapes - can you spot them ?

Hey Trey,

the 6/8 time signature will have 6 8th notes instead of 4 quarter notes - it's the waltz groove. Check out the chorus part in the middle of the lesson to feel the pulse.

Well, if you combine notes belonging to these scales you can come up with riffs. My advice is to get the sound of these scales very well into your mind and then understand how they are harmonized. Once you nail these things you will have a variety of tools to work with. What say you? Does harmonizing sound familiar to you?

Will do Cosmin!

I'm not very familiar with harmonizing.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 10 2012, 09:20 AM

Hey Trey,

Harmonizing means to build a chord from each step of a scale using only the notes from that scale.

If for instance we have the C major scale (C D E F G A B C) and we know the formulas for major, minor and diminished chords:

Major - 1 3 5
Minor - 1 b3 5
Diminished - 1 b3 b5

...we will obtain the following chords in this particular order: Cmaj Dmin Emin Fmaj Gmaj Amin Bdiminished Cmajor

These are the chords we use to create chord progressions using the notes of C major smile.gif

Can you please do the same drill for the G major scale? smile.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Sep 12 2012, 12:39 AM

So for the G Major scale it would be:

(G A B C D E F G)

As far as which chords to use or how to pick numbers for the:

Major Scale
Diminished Scale
Minor Scale

I have no clue what to do. Below is what you gave to me as an example but I had no clue what to do.

Major - 1 3 5
Minor - 1 b3 5
Diminished - 1 b3 b5

...we will obtain the following chords in this particular order: Cmaj Dmin Emin Fmaj Gmaj Amin Bdiminished Cmajor

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 13 2012, 08:30 AM

Trey smile.gif The G major scale is : G A B C D E F# G - you apply the w w h w w w h formula to obtain it. By this, I mean that between:

G and A there's a whole tone - w
A and B - whole tone
B and C - half tone - h
C and D - whole tone
D and E - whole tone
E and F# - whole tone
F# and G - half tone

The G major chord is formed by using the 1 3 5 steps of the G major scale. This means G B D, right?
The G minor chord is formed by using the 1 b3 5 steps of the G major scale. This means G Bb D, right? - the G minor does not belong to the G major scale, so as you observe, we had to alter the 3rd step in order to obtain that chord.
The G diminished is formed by using the 1 b3 b5 steps -> G Bb Db - once again, altering the 3rd and 5th step to obtain it.

Now, when harmonizing a scale we must keep in mind that the notes making up the chords must belong only to that scale, ok?

I will do it for G major and I will ask you to do it for the D major scale smile.gif

Gmaj Amin Bmin Cmaj Dmaj Emin F#diminished Gmaj

Please let me know if it's clear now wink.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Sep 21 2012, 04:49 PM

So for D it would be:

Dmaj Emin F#min Gmaj Amaj Bmin C#Diminished Dmaj?

Does the formula have to be this way? Like for example, could the formula read:

Dmin Emin F#Diminished Gmaj Amaj Bmaj C#Diminished Dmaj?

I'm just trying to grasp this concept.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 22 2012, 05:16 PM

This is correct:

Dmaj Emin F#min Gmaj Amaj Bmin C#Diminished Dmaj

But the formula stays this way in the case of D major, because the chords in the other formula can't belong to D major as the notes making them up don't belong to D major biggrin.gif

It's like that mate - one try for let's say.... Bb major? tongue.gif

I'm having a hard time figuring this one out but I think I have the basic concept. Maybe we could move on to something else?

I just got my guitar out of the shop. I had it intonated and set up for Drop C tuning so I should be good to get some of these lessons in.

I was really digging your metal metrics series. Maybe we could hit that one up?

Hey Cosmin!

Sorry I've been MIA from the music scene lately. With Cross Country finally ended I'm ready to get back to it.

I kind of fell off with the KSE lesson. I'll probably pick it up later but as for now I very much would like to work on Meta. I love the song and am super excited to hopefully get to learn it and then get feedback from the guy that made it.

Sound okay? wink.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Dec 4 2012, 08:53 AM

Hello Trey! Glad to have you back mate smile.gif I have nothing against that, but I want you to finish it if you start it smile.gif And pick up the KSE lesson afterwards as it's a bit more difficult than this one.

Deal?

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Dec 5 2012, 06:28 PM

Sounds like a plan to me!

I'll be tinkering with the KSE lesson here and there until I eventually get it down. I just don't want to get frustrated with it and not want to continue on with it!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Dec 6 2012, 08:25 AM

You have no reason to get frustrated Trey - are you in a competition that you haven't told me about? smile.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jan 17 2013, 12:13 AM

Hey C-man!

Sorry I keep going MIA on you. Every time I get free to practice hard again I get caught up with something.

I'm still practicing the KSE lesson (sorry it is going so slow) but I figured maybe we could start working with minor scales? I've always been told the minor scale and its associates are what metal is based on.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 17 2013, 10:32 AM

Hey Trey smile.gif Well, life doesn't always allow us to keep following our plans eh? sad.gif Hmmm, should it be a rhythm or a lead based lesson? What are you aiming for, aside the fact that it has to be based on a minor scales? smile.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jan 18 2013, 03:18 AM

Both.

I want to learn how to write metalcore and I think learning how to use Minor scales and scales that go with it would allow me to write music better.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 18 2013, 09:49 AM

Well then smile.gif Let's choose two of them wink.gif

For lead - http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/B-Minor-Ballad-Solo/ This one should keep you busy - I want a lot of focus on the details, k? It's got a lot of articulation going on - bends and vibrato biggrin.gif

For rhythm - this one should be easier than the KSE lesson - http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metalcore-I-Trivium-Style/ but also nice and packed with metalcore elements.

How much time would you need for two nice takes? biggrin.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jan 18 2013, 07:02 PM

I think I could get the Trivium lesson done in a few days. I've actually had it bookmarked so its nice to actually have a reason to start it.

Im going to take a little longer on the lead lesson because I would like to actually get it right

Awesome suggestions, I'm looking forward to getting them started!

Also, I bought 'Seeds' the other day! A couple of my buddies loved the EP and bought their copies as well. Journey is my favorite so far!

Hopefully you'll do a lesson on it like you did for Meta (hint hint wink.gif )

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jan 20 2013, 02:16 PM

Hey Cosmin,

Loving the B minor ballad solo suggestion. I'm getting the bends down well. It's taking me a little while to get the sweeping motion section down. I realize it's not a full sweep but it's confusing me when I play it for some reason so it'll take a little while.

I think I may be recording my take of Meta soon as well so I'd love to see what you think of that!

Just thought I'd check in and not leave you in the dark like I've been doing laugh.gif

Can do! I have my ESP in Drop-C for another week so I could probably get a (decent) video of me playing a few of their riffs! You should check him out if you haven't already. My Dad doesn't usually compliment the bands that I like because he thinks they are all the same. However, my Dad even noticed that he is very bluesy and pays close attention to his bending.

I'd like to incorporate blues, jazz, and darker sounding music as well as get a good understanding of minor and diminished scales.

Not to sound all depressed or something but I really like dark music. I feel it teems with emotion.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 26 2013, 08:49 AM

Gotcha mate!

Well, let's see what we can do about getting you acquainted with the diminished context for starting out. Please take a look over the lessons below and choose your favorite. It would be a good idea to tackle them all (speed is not important here, but the shapes and the correlation of the arpeggios and scales with the harmonies), simply to get your ears acquainted to the sounds and understand more about contextual situations regarding this concept smile.gif

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Diminished-Responsibility/
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Diminished-Arpeggio-Madness/

How does this sound to you? After that I would suggest picking up a track - a backing from these lessons would be cool I think - and applying the concepts you have understood from these lessons.

Yes. The are great. I really like the 2nd and 3rd videos.

One thing though, in the introductory section of the 2nd video you suggested, Muris talks about learning the notes of each scale used to be able to transition smoothly.

My question is, how do I actually learn where each scale starts and ends?

I'm no theory expert and I really barely know the notes of a guitar. I feel like I need some theory background in order to be able to understand all of this.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 27 2013, 08:44 AM

Hey Trey,

It is indeed an important thing to be able to see the notes making up a scale on the neck and get to make up arpeggios, scale sequences or use intervals at command, so for this, I recommend the following

Each of those scales is based on the harmonic minor formula -> 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8 - you can apply this from all the root notes and obtain all the harmonic minor scales used in the lesson.

Try to do this and listen to the scale go up and down covering 2 octaves let's say. After that, try to ascend and descend using intervals and various groups of notes (8ths, triplets, 16th notes, groups of 5, of 7 notes etc.)

Once you have done that, you will have a pretty good view of your 'map' so to say and then the paths chosen by Muris on your 'map' won't seem so foggy wink.gif

What say you?

Sounds like something that will take a while. I'll probably go through and do the actual lesson and then go back and actually try to learn more about it.

Ok Trey, either way, it is best that you understand the map smile.gif Let me know how it goes, ok?

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Feb 28 2013, 05:00 AM

For sure Cosmin.

Question, have you ever played an Gibson guitars? If so, what are your experiences with them? I'm looking into them right now as I'll be receiving lots of graduation money from relatives.

Any bad experiences or preferred guitar styles?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Feb 28 2013, 09:34 AM

Hey Trey - lotsa money/ lotsa decisions ey? biggrin.gif

I am not a fan of Gibson guitars, simply because I can't get along with playing them so, I wouldn't know what to say - I am more of a strat type body fan.

But PRS is my game wink.gif Have you tried those?

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Feb 28 2013, 02:12 PM

Always have loved PRS but have never known where to start?

Before I got my Alexi it was between the Alexi Sig and the Purple Allender model PRS.

Mate, the ESP is quite a metal guitar smile.gif if you get 2000 bucks, I'd go for a good ol PRS custom 24 or an SC 250 - the singlecut, somewhat like Mark Tremonti's model, but a bit cheaper.

Oh I can't do complex stuff yet!

I'm thinking I'm going to make a legitimate cover track and I'll probably put that over me playing the actual song! I don't know if that would really count as me playing it or not, especially for a REC take...

Desolation

What is going on
These walls are closing in
My hourglass is turned upside down
The pouring never ends
A slave to the pain is what I’ve become
Torturing myself yet again

Don’t pray for me
Just watch me wither away

Emptiness protruding
Self-hatred fills my soul
My glass has become half empty
Obscurity is at whole

Don’t pray for me
Just watch me wither away
This inoperative shell of a man
Seems destined to remain

I need a savior
In the abyss so gray
Damnation lingers
My life is in jeopardy

Or pray for me
And watch me wither alone
Because no one was there before
A formality rotted to the bone

Don’t pray for me
I’ll do this all alone
I’ve always done it alone

Nope, ended up having to quit though because I wasn't exactly supposed to go Second Degree that soon anyway. To get my third degree I would have had to wait until I was 18. I basically would have done nothing for 6 years so I ended up moving on from martial arts.

Well, I've actually been in the process of learning songs.

Right now I'm learning:
To The Stage by Asking Alexandria
Becoming the Bull by Atreyu

Along with that I've been perfecting David Wallimann's lesson "Lick Construction Class Workshop" to work on feeling out what I'm playing.

Big question though,

What do you use to plug your guitar into your computer?

Ah... I see, well, it is a wise decision then. If you should ever need to gig tho, you should consider raising money for a good combo that can stay with you in college. Something like 50W tube, if possible.

It's always good to think things a little in advance wink.gif

It's not that complicated mate, all you need is to focus on things a bit and get a hang on how it's done. After that, the more you do it the better you become wink.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 3 2013, 02:22 AM

Hey C-man!

School is FINALLY over!

So I was thinking, with a new start in my life, maybe we could start new on this journey (don't worry, I'm still doing Meta). I'm going to start working with Todd on developing speed but I want to diversify my playing.

I want to start learning multiple styles of guitar so because of this I figured we could start doing random lessons until I find a style I want to isolate. Would that be cool?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 3 2013, 07:19 AM

Hey Trey!

Congratulations once again mate smile.gif This will be definitely cool, as out of each style you will learn something which you can integrate in your own playing style (that's what I did over the years and I am still doing it biggrin.gif)

Let's think like this - we'll develop various techniques through the aid of various styles, deal?

Have you ever played funky stuff? smile.gif That can lead to BIG changes for the good only, in your rhythm playing wink.gif

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 3 2013, 02:50 PM

Sounds great!

I've actually never played funk but I've always loved it an been interested in it! Is that where we will start first?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 4 2013, 10:45 AM

Yes! wink.gif

How bout this one? http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Funk-Rhythm-Swing-Feel/ - let me know if it's doable, ok?

That one sounds great! If I don't reply soon don't think I haven't seen the message, I've been incredibly busy lately.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 9 2013, 01:54 PM

Hey Trey smile.gif No problem man, write me when you have the time wink.gif It's all good as long as you don't neglect your practice and playing in general!

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 25 2013, 02:50 AM

So I've been practicing the piece here and there but I've been frustrated because I realized my timing is awful.

I started trying to use a metronome but then realized that I can't even stay on beat with that. Is there any way you could make a video explaining how to use a metronome. 8 years of playing and I've never used one!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 25 2013, 08:29 AM

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 29 2013, 03:40 PM

So I have a few errands to run but after that I'll be doing this video. I'm not so worried about the 60 BPM as I'm worrying more about applying this at a faster BPM.

Gotta start somewhere though, right? wink.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 30 2013, 12:29 PM

Of course you do smile.gif

Thing is, as long as you push things at a steady pace and don't get frustrated about not having the rhythm you would like to have in terms of how fast you evolve, you will get there smile.gif Slow and surefooted is always best!

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 30 2013, 11:58 PM

Here it is!

I wasn't too sure with the 8th notes and I didn't even try 16th notes!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 1 2013, 08:38 AM

Hey Trey! Good job till the 8th notes smile.gif

Now, let's just focus on these, ok? I want you to try and feel 2 equal notes on each beat - but, not by playing the guitar - use your hands and clap them smile.gif If you are unsure, let me know and I'll do a vid for ya, k?

Slow is difficult as well - but this is where control is coming from wink.gif

Cosmin! Long time no talk!

Glad to be back but more excited to start the process of working with you again! I think instead of picking up where we left off it would be more beneficial to rework my workout routine.

I want to get more accurate with my guitar playing while also building speed through alternate picking, sweeping, etc.

My reasoning for this is because I can always learn metalcore or any other style here but without accuracy in my notes I won't be able to play anything well. Who knows, may be after this journey I'll be the next Andy James laugh.gif

Thanks for the help buddy!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 14 2014, 08:59 AM

Howdy Trey smile.gif Welcome back mate!

As I said in the previous thread, I have started a new program which I think would be beneficial to you - please take a look here: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=50025&st=0&start=0 answer the questions and we can begin smile.gif You can write the answers here in the thread wink.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Mar 14 2014, 03:38 PM

Awesome!

Well then my answers are:

1. I have been playing guitar between 9-11 years (I can't remember my exact age but that is the general area).

2. I feel like I'm definitely not a beginner but I'm trying to get going in the intermediate level.

3. I have basic theoretical knowledge that I'd like to improve on. I can find note on the fretboard but they aren't committed to memory.

4. As of lately I haven't really touched a guitar since I've been busy with school and had to leave them at home to get in the swing of a new lifestyle. Now that I'm taking my guitar back to school with me I feel like I'll be able to dedicate anywhere from an hour to two hours for practice.

5. I was raised as a metal kid so I love shred guitar techniques like sweep picking and alternate picking but I'm also incredibly interested in the economy picking technique.

6. I would definitely like to improve my note accuracy and my speed. I'd also like to improve and build my use of alternate picking and sweep picking because a lot of the songs that I listen to use these techniques. This would greatly help me become a better lead guitar player. I would also like to improve my musical diversity. I'd like to break into the real of jazz playing because the style uses these same techniques a lot.

7. In my current experience as a guitarist I've jammed with some friends and recorded things here and there but never to the extent of it being noteworthy. I've been more of a home playing person.

8. Right now I have two main guitars:
-PRS Custom 24 SE
-ESP Alexi Laiho Signature Blacky
and then since I am at school I use Guitar Rig 5 as my amp system. I then use garageband to record into. I have more gear but these items are the ones that get the most use.

9. At a young age I was blown away by guys like Paul Gilbert (my Dad is a huge fan). As of lately the guitarists that inspire me now are Alexi Laiho, Michael Paget, Misha Mansoor, Synyster Gates, Tosin Abasai and Guthrie Govan.

Here are a few cover pieces and lessons that I've recorded over the past year for a visual/audio analysis:

Thanks Cosmin!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 15 2014, 03:39 PM

hey Trey!

Thank you for answering the questions mate! You have evolved a lot since we last talked, that's for certain!

I think we can go for developing your chops in musical contexts as a main aim, judging from what you told me and I would like to suggest the following approach:

Spending 5 hrs/ lesson (2 hrs/day - about 1 hrs for each lesson) in which you should:

- understand the theoretical concepts
- learn the lesson structure
- learn each part and reproduce it slowly with the metronome
- put all the parts together and practice them against the slowest available backing track
- work your way up tempo with the available backing tracks

Day 1-5:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Sweeps_Major_and_Minor/ - sweep basics to start with wink.gif

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Intervals-Etude/ - a little alternate picking treat, for you smile.gif To get ya out of the rut smile.gif Nothing straight forward here wink.gif

Day 6-7 - Revision (you practice the lesson, assuming you that you already know the structure and you can play it) - focus on timing, definition, clean playing, articulations and details! Recording - if you wish - and writing conclusions so that we may draw a line and see what have you learned in that week wink.gif

How does it sound Trey?

I might have to spread these out over a little longer than a week because I really do want to understand these lessons and as someone with basic theory knowledge it'll be a little difficult at first trying to nail down concepts and understand what I am reading.

I also would like to try and produce most of the lessons that we work on as REC takes so that might add to the process but I'll be sure to keep this thread up to date (like I used to do) and make sure to ask you questions through out the process of learning.

Thanks Cosmin! You're the man!

Heh! Very happy to see that this is working good for you mate smile.gif

By all means, it's very important to understand the theory behind what you are doing, so please let me know if there are any theory related questions and take your time if you think you need more than a week, but it would be interesting to keep it in max 2 weeks, so that you will pick up a faster pace of evolution smile.gif What do you think?

Hey man,

So the theory for the sweep picking is fairly straightforward but I'm getting a little confused on the theory for the inteval etude.

I get that it was written in the C Ionian mode (and all I really know is that it is an Ionian scale in C) but what exactly makes up the 3rds, 4ths and 5ths of the intervals that are in the tag line of the video?

Hehe! Good question Trey smile.gif

If you will notice, you always have groups of 2 notes that make up successions, right? Each two notes make up an interval smile.gif For instance, the first two notes C and G represent a fifth - G is C's fifth and then the next pair is also a fifth - D and A - A is D's fifth smile.gif Hope it's clear? biggrin.gif

Getting to practicing now! Sorry I've been absent the last few days. It was a busy weekend!

I'm having a little bit of trouble with the alternate picking and I'm just going to be up front and honest, a week is not going to be enough time at this point in my playing for me to actually learn and play these two pieces right so it'll be a little while.

Thanks Cosmin!

Howdy Trey smile.gif

Don't worry mate, let's just see the takes and progress and we'll take it from there wink.gif Let me know when you are ready to ask questions or when you have learned the lesson and you have recording - the quality doesn't matter that much wink.gif

Alrighty Cosmin,

I'm back again! So last time things didn't exactly pan out. School got pretty hectic when I got ready to start learning again. You know how things get when life is in the way.

Anyway,

I've decided to eliminate some of the distractions in my life from guitar (xbox mostly) and I'm ready to strictly focus on developing my playing.

Lately I've felt a strong desire to develop speed and stamina. I've also had a strong desire to work on string bending and control. I've always loved fast and tasteful playing some I'm trying to build towards that.

Let me know what you think bud,

I promise I don't plan on dipping out this time!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 16 2014, 12:18 PM

Hey mate smile.gif I am always open for business tongue.gif All you have to do is ask and then work hard!

I think we can begin straight away with these two lessons, to get you in shape in the directions you asked about:

Speed and stamina:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Stamina-School/
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Stamina-School-2-Downpicking/

These may look simple, but they are good starting points to get you warmed up for the next things wink.gif

String bending and control - I don't remember quite well, but have you tried my Voice of your guitar lesson? If not, you can try both of them smile.gif

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/The-Voice-Of-Your-Guitar/
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/The-Voice-Of-Your-Guitar-2/

I tell you what - do you think you can tackle these lessons in 2 weeks time? smile.gif I am throwing you a challenge here, in order to motivate you even more to get back in the game seriously!

Do we have a deal, sir? smile.gif

Cosmin

Sounds like a plan!

I think and can have some results sometime next week if not all at least for the Stamina lessons!

Hey Trey smile.gif That sounds great! Also, make sure you analyze the lessons from all perspectives - theory and how it is applied wink.gif You don't want to learn these 'just by heart' but, you may surely want to make use of the concepts in your own playing, right?

Please take a look and let me know what questions you might have - regardless of their nature smile.gif

Will do. So far the lessons from Ben are very basic, not too much theory there but I haven't actually gotten to look at the theory from your lessons. I'll probably get to that tomorrow if that is okay?

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 17 2014, 07:35 PM

I'd like to add also Cosmin,

My ultimate goal is working toward being able to play in a shred/progressive manner. Not that I want that to be my style but I love that type of playing:
-quick
-sharp
-fluid

I think other than speed and bend technique I also need to focus on good legato technique and a MUCH stronger pinky but that all can come later. I just wanted you to know the direction that I want to head in.

It's great for me, man wink.gif No rush but no slouching either biggrin.gif I'd rather we communicate often so that I know you are in the game - so please, do ask questions wink.gif

I understand wink.gif We will also include legato in the drills and I think Ben's series - Land of Legato are just fitting for the task at hand, but all in due time, alright? Regarding the style, that's more of an approach and an all around spirit of playing rather than a style smile.gif For instance, Al Di Meola plays like that and he doesn't play prog/djent or any of that stuff wink.gif So let's keep the spirit and apply it to your style, deal?

Sounds doable.

For the voice of your guitar lesson, can you explain how you chose the scales/modes that you did? I don't really understand the scale mode concept.

Question on "The Voice of Your Guitar"

So I have the first video nailed down. I think I'm playing it well and my vibrato seems to be really good. The problem comes when going to the second video (video 3). I just cant seem to understand what I'm doing.

Anyway you could make a video isolating this section to show me?

Hey bro smile.gif Let's take things one at a time:

You have two modes which are both derived from the E major scale:

E Ionian - E F# G# A B C# D# E
A Lydian - A B C# D# E F# G# A

The progressions I used are both derived by harmonizing the each mode:

Progression one - Aadd9 Badd11 G#m Aadd9 was obtained from the A lydian mode and it's a modal progression (you may notice that it starts off with a chord derived from the first step of the mode)

Progression two - Emaj Badd11 C#madd11 Aadd9 Badd11 was obtained in the same manner, but in respect to the E Ionian mode.

Now the question is - do you know what harmonizing means and how to apply the concept on any mode or scale? This is the basic starting point for understanding what I used and why smile.gif

Trey, could you be a bit more specific about the problem so that I may know what exactly doesn't fall into place? Have you tried to play along with the slowed down version of the part?

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 19 2014, 11:33 PM

Could you explain harmonization to me? I basically think of it as just harmonizing scales together in synch with the backing notes.

And I"m talking about the shift from the bend at the end of the first video to the first bend at the end of the second video.

Hey bro smile.gif

Well, harmonizing means deriving vertical structures of 2 or more notes from each scale degree, by taking care that those notes will only be a part of the scale or more you are working with. Basically, you are creating chords from each step of the scale.

In order to understand the idea better, I will recommend this lesson: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Triads_in_Major_Scale_Series_Part_1/

It explains the whole concept AND biggrin.gif in order for you to prove that you understood wink.gif I want you to apply the harmonization on the E major scale - as in the recommended lesson it is done in the C major scale. Do we have a deal, young man?

About the bend - I assume it is because you don't see the passing from the first video to the second - you just have to hold the bend and release it when the part explained in the second video begins - like this:

I sort of get it but I'm not sure that I really understand how to do it. tongue.gif I'm a newbie to all of this wizardry called music theory so it'll take me a while before I can actually apply. Right now I'll finish those first lessons you sent me and then I'll go back and try and understand the theory.

Currently I'm working by myself through the actually theory board and am slowly understanding it so maybe it'll help if we went through it together. We go through the lessons in order and then maybe we could work exercises within them before moving on to the next lesson?

I think it's a good idea like to take the following steps:

- finish the current assignments
- start discussing theory together and in the same time, you could tackle the lesson about harmonizing that I have suggested. It's very very useful and it will surely put the theory to work in a nice incipient context. But tell me man, what have you read about theory so far, so that I may know where to take things from?

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 22 2014, 08:51 PM

Currently I'm in the Professors Theory Guide. I'm on learning to write scales in the quick start program.

Posted by: TreyDeschamp Jun 23 2014, 02:59 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I found my issue with learning the "Voice Of Your Guitar" Lesson.

At the beginning of the second video the tab says to bend the 8th fret of the B string but in the video you are bending the 7th fret from the way it looks to me. MAYBE (big maybe) there is a mistake in the tab.

Anyway, I'm loving the lesson so far man.

I got there wink.gif If we were to sum up a general rule for the major scales - we could state that you can't have 2 notes sharing the same name in a natural major scale and that pretty much sums it up, if you are to ask me. But foremost, have you understood how to form a natural major scale? That is a very important aspect of music theory and I would begin everything from that point, in order to get you into theory and into applying it in what you already know smile.gif This link here - http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=47641 explains things, so please read and let's play around with some exercises afterwards - deal?

Hehe biggrin.gif Matey, look at second 0:44 in video 3 - that's the one explaining the second part wink.gif You'll see clearly that I am bending the 8th fret on the B string. Say, are you using the slow videos to learn the tune? Because everything is played very slowly in there and with angles for each hand. I have a little suggestion for ya smile.gif

Rely on your ears and not on tabs - especially here, where you have the exact playing slowed down and exposed in different angles wink.gif It will not only train your ears but show you the mechanics of the hands. All you have to do is watch and listen smile.gif

Glad you like the lesson bro! It's a line I made up with my first serious band almost 10 years ago! biggrin.gif
