GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Learning Classical Guitar Songs

classical guitar songs are really long and often times are not repetitive. they consist of many notes and different chords, and what i was wondering was how do u learn the song? i have been memorizing them but it takes along time, and if i dont play it in a while i forget it! i can remember rock songs and what not, but are there any tricks to learning those beautiful/long classical songs? thanks

I just go part by part slowly and get the piece done however long it takes. For some long and difficult ones it can take even 2-3 weeks but once you learn it you won't really forget over night It will take you long before you forget, at least for me. I don't really know tricks for that, it just worked for me.

I don't play classic guitar, but I do play the piano, so I think the principe is the same I agree on Emir. Try to identify different parts/phrases, and then work on slowly them until you get it right. When you're sure about some phrases, match them together. If you notice that you don't master some parts yet, look at them even more precise. Try to make your own exercises about what causes you some more troubles

When I was in to classical guitar I liked to learn only a measure or 2 of a new piece per day. I seemd to remember what I learned better if I just took bite size pieces at any given time.

Breaking down the piece and taking it step by step is the best way to go. What is important IMO is to learn all the parts well before going to the next one. After every learned bit, you learn to connect them as well, and play them connected couple of times. If you repeat learned bits after every section, they will stick in the memory for long time (you need to play it from time to time ofc).

Vizualizing the "chords" underneath being those triads ore whatever chords or scales will help you a lot. Also iit is important to see the material as "oh now the ball is here and we want to go there". Form and style are also very important.
